I was wondering if anyone here listens to Jrock (japanese rock for the ignorant), and if so, who are your favorite bands.

Mine are Dir en grey, X-Japan, Malice Mizer, Gackt, and Miyavi (the last two might count as Jpop though...dunno). I listen to a ton more too, bout 30 more jrock artists.

Do the Black Mages count? If so that's pretty much the only J-Rock band that I like.

The Mad Capsule Markets are the best Japanese band ever. Bar none. Polysics kick ass, too.

I'm into the Japanese punk rock scene, but I'm not crazy about Japanese rock music. It probably has something to do with the fact that it all has pretty much the exact same sound and mood. Gothic guitar riffs to some guy singing in deep trembolo, trying to sound like Gackt, throw in a music video with the band playing in front of some girl in a gothic dress slowly dancing in the background and the lead-singer trying to reach out to her, and there you go.

The only thing I truly appreciate about Japanese rock is the fashion style, even though that is pretty much all the same from band to band, also.

Yeah, man. That guy needs to show up sometime.

I like The Mad Capsules better than any other band in the world, because they don't conform to genre and they just produce amazing music. :spin:

I really haven't heard any other jrock band besides Dir en grey and I really like them. I would most def. get into the genre more if I knew of more bands like that.

My favorite j-rock band is merry. Merry is awesome. They play rock, and don't do the whole pipe organ thing that you don't seem to like, Necro.

I mean, i had a time when I liked malice mizer and moi dix mois etc, but now those sorta bore me. But I still like dir en grey, again because they play rock music. But merry is <3333 Haraiso, Japanese Modernist, etc~ Though apparently their music is political. sorta like me liking soad i guess.

Dir en Grey, Malice Mizer...that's pretty much it. I just classify it as rock though, since I don't go around calling North American rock NARock, or Swedish rock SRock.

I'm more into pop music, so I have alot more pop artists in my lists. Ai Otsuka, Utada Hikaru, Onitsuka Chihiro, etc.

The only Japanese band I listen to regularly would be the Pillows (if not for the Fooly Cooly obsession I had awhile back...). Don't know if that's rock, but it's music, so it's close enough to me. L'arc en Ciel is pretty neat too.

Blood is good....but i dont find them too original, their costumes seem to be ripoffs of malice mizer, just slightly altered. And moi dix mois...well i like them, but mana made them a frikkin clone of malice mizer. They look alike alot of times, sound almost exactly the same, even the singer sounds like a mixture of gackt and klaha.

The Pillows i've heard of, but not listened to. L'Arc i dont really like, too pop-rockish for my taste. Merry is pretty good. Anyone like MUCC? I love those guys...and um....if you've not heard them, this is the link to my fav song of theirs, Ware arubeki basho: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtWhVIJpWKo

Tasura, good list you've got going there!

*sighs*

Hot Topic now has shirts for Psycho le Cemu, Phantasmagoria, and D'espairsRay. I fear that they're going to turn Jrock into a trend, with little pre-teens running around saying "i listen to japanese music, i'm cool!" and they wont even appreciate the music (if they even listen to it at all).

Moon Rabbits

There's not much to appreciate about many jrock bands...alot of them sound the same, ala Mois dix Moi and Malice Mizer. I know, I know, Mana is the composer in both, but honestly, he needs to set them apart some how.

Dir en Grey, PANIC*Ch, and Malice Mizer are the only japanese rock bands I've heard that sound remotely different. :(

Pop is where it's at, I tell you, Onitsuka Chihiro's voice can blow even Gackt's out of the water. Honestly.

Add X-Japan to that list above. They've got a very distinct sound. And penicillin. :S My list keeps growing.

I heard Hot Topic has Dir en grey too, but I don't go there so I wouldn't know for sure. Anywayz, I'm really tired of hearing things like, "I don't want Jrock in anywhere, but in Japan". Or, "Oh no, people are going to start listening to Jrock now too", just because it's spreading in other areas besides Japan.

Music is universal. It is meant to be heard whether it be good, or bad. Music should be accesible to everyone, everywhere and not hidden, because of the fear that it might become a trend. Jrock spreading should be seen as a good thing, because that would mean it would make it more accesible to the people who are already fans and possibly even create more fans. Sure, every genre of music has it's idiotic fanbase attached, but where there are those types of fans there are the die hard fans who really appreaciate the music for what it is.

Ha, I'm guilty of that. xD But yes... and also, the same die hard fans that appreciated the music way before they got into the bands looks and/or gimmicks. So what if people don't collect posters, or cosplay as the band? That's not what being a fan of a band is about. And I'm ranting mostly about Jrock fans, because they have the tendency to fall into certain catergories.

I've never been a terribly huge fan of rock music in general, as I often prefer more melodic music, but I've been exposed to some Jrock, and I'm not averse to it. I think the best I've heard is L'arc en Ciel's stuff.

She has a lovely voice...but uh...can you really make the comparison between her and Gackt? They're male and female after all...they're going to have different sounding voices

I'm very glad to hear other people who're sick of that kind of statements. I hear it in a lot of the various non-mainstream interest groups I'm in, and it gets on my nerves. I barely listen to anything but Japanese music, but I have no illusions of that making me "special" in any way. I'm happy when I hear of more people getting into Jrock.

Anyway, as I said up there, I nearly listen exclusively to Japanese music. My favourite band is Dir en grey (creative, eh? *grins*), but I'm also very fond of Malice Mizer, Moi dix Mois, Psycho le Cemu, An Cafe, MUCC, Vidoll, Phantasmagoria, X-Japan, 12012, Alice Nine, Blam Honey, D, Duel Jewel, DéspairsRay, Kagrra, Pierrot, Kirito, Miyavi, La'Mule, Madeth Gray'll, Penicillin, The Yellow Monkey, Gackt, Hyde, hide, Merry, Nightmare and a lot others.

I agree with that "music is universal" statement. Thats why it seriously pisses me off when i show someone a Jrock group, and they something like "they're good, but i cant understand them so i dont like them." That just leaves me in a "wtfh?" moment and i feel like choking them. I try to show as many people as i can...haha, it's unavoidable on my Myspace, my music playlist on there is 20 jrock songs (8 of which are diru), and the background, videos, and pics are all jrock. xD
