View Full Version : DRK and DRG: Why?

I'm curious what makes so many new players want to play these two jobs. It seems that anyone who is interested in one is often interested in the other as well. I noticed many posts on many boards that show this desire and have noticed a lot here as well. I figured there would be a decent number of people here that might be able to help me understand this.
I know that Cecil and Kain were cool guys and all that, but why doesn't everyone want to become a PLD right off the bat because of Cecil? Sure, DRG is cool with its wyvern and all... I can see that. But what makes so many that like DRG be attracted also to DRK? Why do the two jobs that are the black sheep of the FFXI community draw so much mutual attention from a certain demographic of players?

For Dark Knight I think it's the whole "Badass" image that attracts newer players, and for Dragoon it's the Wyvern. I also notice this, and when players decide they want these Jobs it's usually before they start the game, so it can't be too much to do with function more than it is image. That's my only theory.
Oh and maybe because of the Armour, which I must admit looks rather Awesome.

I wanna do Drk, it looks like alot of fun (i just love melee jobs that employ magic :D ) I also want to do Pld really bad for reasons already stated :tumble: but i don't feel the attraction to Drg ... having a pet is cool but thats why i love Bst and Smn ! (Esp. SMN !!!)
***Edit***
I have noticed a lot of people playing Drk, Nin , and Thf is on the rise again >.< this is Garuda Server ... i haven't really heard alot of people playing drg lately that sorta ebbed ... but it may come back and i think the armor is really cool looking !

Dragoons have been a historical job in the Final Fantasy games, add a dragon pet and cool armor to that and I can see why a lot of players want to be one.
I'm sure Dark Knight attracts some of the darker brooding personalities out there, and with teenagers as your main demographic there are a lot of them.
Plus they do a lot of damage and I can see how more people would want to kill kill kill with their weapons than take damage/heal/support/nuke.

Simply because of the armor sometimes. DRG AF is appealing strangely to many people because its purple even though i am reminded of the Jade look Kain has in FFIV. I know a friend of mine wanted to be a DRG just by looking at the AF Armor and it appealed to him. As for DRKs, they hold very badass weapons, a Great Sword is like a Buster Sword, and a Scythe is like the symbol of Death, it is very badass lets just say. And for doing lots of damage easily multiplies the badass factor even more.
Although personally DRG appeals to be because i can Jump/Super Jump and to a lesser degree have a pet that will follow me and be my companion.
IMO theres nothing wrong with these jobs, in the end there will always be sucky soso jobs. I like WHM because its a healer and a pivotable point in a party in any FF(although in FFXi its less so..makes me kinda meh) and i like to help, similarily to PLD.

Before I started I wanted to be a DRG too. I dont really know why, I just did. Since I started though, I realized the importance of some of the buffing magics (protect, etc) and I have changed my main to become a PLD. I'll eventaully go back and start a DRG but I doubt ill ever start a DRK. As appealing as it sounds doing the most damage in the game (give or take) it just doesnt tickle my fancy. haha

I'm 16 years old and i gotta say this.
I began playing last year and before I even started i had done ALOT of research and i had come up with 1 job i wanted. Dark Knight. It really is the whole badass image. Seeing them in full AF makes them look like a rogue on a journey to destroy everything in their path. Thats a little look into my Goth mind for you all.
Besides that I too sadly had seen the Dragoon full AF and was instantly reminded of the most awesome character in the history of Final Fantasy... KAIN! Beyond that the wyvern reminded me of the wyvern in FFII and everyone loves that.
So the people that want these jobs more often than not do decide on them before they begin playing. And I've also found that most of them either quit after they get them because it wasnt instantly like what they thought it would be or they just toss it aside like a toy at christmas that sucked.
Thankfully I saw the light and discovered that I should do a job that I know I can do well and after I reach a certain point and have a different look at the two jobs I may pick them up for a few quick levels.
I chose to do Monk cause i can do it and do it well. I am now part of a static party and cant just search for a party anymore so recently I have picked up Dragoon and I must say that now that I know how to use my jobs I can actually enjoy them without the "aura" that I once saw from them.

Just today from 4-1AM, i played my friend's DRK at his house. I must say that DRK with Absorb TP is really awesome. I was fighting crabs in Kuftal and lvled from 53-55 really easily.
I PTed with a SAM, and i must say i was easily able to out-TP him or match him throughout all those hours pretty consistantly. By careful use of Aspir, and Absorb TP, i was able to keep TP near the 80s+ almost always. Even when i was swinging normally and the SAM was too, i was able to outpace the SAM on serveral locations, and if he went pass me, its usually never by much.
With Aspir i was able to keep my TP high, and i spammed it whenever i can. Then at the start of a battle if i have low TP, i whack it twice and use Absorb TP to gain TP. Once i have 100TP i start using Absorb STR and VIT or INT(for MB) for max damage if the SAM doesnt have enough TP. And i would cast an Absorb at the start of a battle if i can while the puller was making its way back to camp therefore not really losing much TP. Power Slashes ranged from 100-500 but mostly 250-300, and alternating buffs per WS. DRK is truly awesome if played right, all i needed was Aspir and the occasional Refresh if i dipped below 10MP for some reason. Otherwise careful MP management and use of buffs/spells make them very strong.

I was dead set on being a DRG when I first got the game. I wanted to run around with a cool little wyvern!
I'm not really sure what happened that, but I'm completely content as a BLM these days. There's a bunch of other jobs I'll be trying my hand at before I even glance in the way of the DRG quest.
DRK never held any interest to me.
Ouch!
08-21-2006, 10:07 AM
When I first started, I never considered either. I was a mage type all the way. When I had trouble with leveling BLM on my first character, I mucked around with a bunch of different jobs early on, mostly melee. Eventually I settled on WAR unsure of what to procede to afterwards. I quit and swore that if I ever came back I'd be a tarutaru dark knight.
I can't say that I was interested in becoming a dark knight because it looks dark and mysterious, or that it deals some massive damage. Rather, it had to do with the fact that I thought playing a tarutaru melee of any sort would be fun as hell. I chose DRK simply because it made use of my tarutaru's stats better than any other tarutaru melee would. More specifically, I could actually use my massive INT and larger MP pool. I quit at level 40 when the accuracy craze was really raging and people were starting to tell me I had to get sniper's rings.
Recently I'd been wondering what job I was going to take up after RDM, and ever since the new patch and the addition of Absorb-TP, I became interested in DRK again. I really enjoyed being a melee that could not only cast spells, but also deal good damage. I liked being able to actually use the absorb- spells. I've noticed that other DRKs simply don't because they don't have the MP for it. I've seen DRKs that don't cast magic at all, which seemed like a horrible waste to me. While the damage wasn't absolutely huge, I was also able to burst on my own skillchains, which was really quite fun. I even kept up with good equipment, so I was outdamaging most other melees I encountered anyway. I wasn't really surprised by the rampant mediocracy of the majority of melee players.

I was never interested in Dragoon or Dark Knight; nevertheless, I acknowledge the appeal of these jobs as standard Final Fantasy jobs that are received well by the general public.

when I first started playing it was MNK and RNG all the way. Then once I joined my LS the three main guys in there at the time where all DRGs. I would listen to them talk about it and thought to my self yeah that would be cool to be like them.
Now that I am lvl 30 MNK I stuck with my original plan and still got RNG before DRG. AS for DRK the only reason I am currently working on it..(but due to maintinence can't complete it just yet :mad2: ) is becasue it is incredibly easy compared to some of the other advanced job quest out there.

My goal is to level quite a few classes. They include Paladin, Whm, Blm, Rdm, Ninja, Ranger, Warrior and Summoner. I can do a bit of mix and match with all those...should be a long amount of arduous leveling...prolly will never happen...im gonna have to decide what I wanna be...lol

No the wyverns abilities are decided by your sub job. There are 3 types of wyverns, offensive, defensive and balanced.
Offensive is when you sub stuff like warrior or samurai, they use breath attacks n stuff.
Defensive heals you when you cast magic sometimes, this is when you sub black mage n white mage n stuff.
Balanced is a mix of both, with jobs like... Paladin subbed, etc.

This summer I started again and I have decided to get MNK to 75 then merit all the STR CRIT% and other powerhouse stats needed for DRK then I will once again become a Dark Knight! Till then I level it to 10 in my free time (currently 36MNK and rising fast...)

Yearg ? From Fenrir ?
I will shed some light onto the reasons why, first up FFXI is an MMORPG, there are many pc gamers who got into this genre without having any past interest or experience with the non online FF games. There is some pretty big changes from this vs the others, the first being that FFXI while good in its time ( and still somewhat ok imo ) is primarily based on two things because of the real human player base and because of the challenge lvl SE implemented into the game.
This like it or not causes greed and forced socialising with many people who you will both love and hate, sadly it really does not mix in a pure enjoyment level. On top of that you have little high school politics going on ( aka drama ) and linkshells at end game being at war or simply hating other linkshells and all the internal problems they have when it comes to getting gear.
There are plenty of jobs in FFXI and they all have their good and bad points, some being better then others depending on how hardcore the players are, bard for example is normaly picked fast by the vets because vets honestly dont want to play with half noobs and half vets when they can make killer parties to xp grind for their 75 sub jobs they need fast because their ls leaders demand this crap end game for obvious reasons.
Drk and Drg are FUN jobs and people like to play it because to alot of people being a melee DD is alot more fun then sitting there being the best ( or one of the best ) DD by casting nukes over and over and over without doing much else other than maybe throwing some cures and those debuffs. It gets boring very fast just like whm and brd, for some people. You have to understand that not everyone wants to play a whm, brd or nin, nor does everyone want to be a tanking war nin either, sadly the community base and its tactical habits have forced these mindsets into people, it all becomes the same old party setup to get max xp per hour and blah blah blah, now dont get me wrong I liked fast xp myself and I took brd to 75 along with drk also and I even took war to 56 ( it was my first job ) and had most of my other subs all at around 25-37.
FFXI is not a game where the average person can decide to pick a job they like and not go through hell because of picking that job, I hate this and hated it since the day I joined on ps2 release, I loved cecil as a Drk in FF4 and was set to become a drk and thats just what I did, I took it very seriously and had the best gear I could buy, using sushi all the time, snipers and macro in str and int gear for my GS and Scythe WS, even macroed in my relic af armor for solo stuff and sometimes my mb after my spinning slashes and I had alot of sky drops also because I also took brd to 75 ( which I must admit I enjoyed up till around 52 merits then it became boring in krt ), I had fun every min of playing drk and it was truth be told the only time I honestly did enjoy playing ffxi, I helped many a noob and never got tired of slaughtering mobs, it never got boring.
However after going through cop and doing sky and hnm crap for months the game really became stagnant to me.
I have no regrets about my years on FFXI, I did it all my way and did not give a /xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif about what anyone thought or did, I will admit I went into the game and used everyone I met because I knew everyone else was doing the same, I knew the only way I would get all the kick ass gear for my drk and gil etc was by playing brd to 75, getting people to kiss my ass and invited me to end game shells that I could also use to beef up my guy more, and you know what ? it godamn worked! I even stole a shair manteel from a pos in my ls who screwed alot of people over and yes I did sell it with my character to IGE when I left the game, which I promptly spent on FFX International and X-2 along with other cool imports like mark of the wolves and last blade, and I dont give a flying @$!% what the backstabbing greedy two faced community on any server thinks about that because thats what you have to do to get ahead in the game, unless you decided to kiss everyones ass so you can beg them to help you later, both ends lead to the same crap.
You said it yourself Yearg, its looked at as the blacksheep, so with so many people having these stupid ideas about others and what jobs they want to play, its no wonder FFXI is a craphole of scumbags backstabbing everyone, if you rag on people and give them hell when they are paying monthly for a game they enjoy and a job they enjoy, you think those people are going to suddenly all cave in and go whm or blm and say drk, drg etc sucks ?
That would be the conforming attitude right ?
Well I will close this by saying:
$%^& FFXI, I was the most nasty ass kicking SOB drk fenrir will ever see, I did what I wanted, took what I wanted, told people where to godamn go when they deserved it and I still had the time of my FFXI life while STILL gaining gil, items, finishing cop before many many ls even got past proms and....I did it my way.
Vondor

Hey Vondor. I don't remember you ever being so angry in game. You were a pretty cool guy and I seem to remember you helping Chal get a Garlaige Coffer key when she was first leveling BLM. I can understand how endgame can get to you and make you bitter. I wasn't really trying to say that DRK or DRG suck. I really enjoy DRG and know some great endgame DRGs.
I gues my question was what drove so many people to pursue these jobs. Also, I've noted that when new people start they seem to often have plans of become either a DRK or DRG, implying they are interested in both. I suppose the best answer is because of FFIV. People seem pretty obssessed with Kain and Cecil.
Of course, that doesn't explain other things I wonder about. For instance, what's the deal with pirates!?! I though this was just an FFXI thing where people were obssess with pirates but I've notice that people were really hoping to get a hardcore pirate for the re-release of FFV as well.

Yearg I was very angry with the community bullsh!t alot of the time I just knew how to hide it well when I needed something done like a cop run or whoring myself on black mandys or scorps. And its one of the reasons why I left, because I never botted I never got an adaman body from an hnm shell although I had virtualy everything else which was best for drk.
I learned that all the time I put into drk and how well I played it, I would never be anything but a stun whore end game, not that sky is fun anyway, well...spending your points for sitting there singing mazurka along with nin buffs and mnk buffs so some taru decked out like a village people member boosting every second and sawking you off for mnd etudes on soul voice lol.
I am trying to explain that it is not us who cause these problems it is the other players who choose to look down on certain jobs which people are stupid enough to believe are noob jobs or that suck.
Pre ranger nerf idmankn and I used to do 6-8 hour grinds in sky for chain 15-16, he used to always want rng only but I invited my drk friend while I was brd and got us all to chain 15 just to prove a point, this was a good while before most people even got to chain 10 up there and yea we all know krt is better....if you can stomach hitting boost for 75 lvls and chi blasting once in a while *yawn*
What made me choose drk and why I love it, is because I hate tanking, hate main healing ( backup healing is fine ), with drk you get to melee and are never expected to tank unless it comes down to saving the whm after your tank dies but that normaly means your whm sucks anyway. Once you hit 66 you also take over thf job ( they hate us and I hate them too unless they are helping me farm haha ), seriously SATA SS is king for light closing KING! What is even more fun is doing those huge dmg numbers with scythe and greatsword, yes they are slow compared to axe and daggers but consider what would happen if you had the same delay, you would be dead in about 30 seconds from hate...also it does take some skill to be able to time absorbs and stuns etc between each swing so your caught up for sc time.
Its all about the spike damage, DOT is nice in some situations but I have played thf and mnk and its boring seeing such pathetic hits even if you are doing more over time, its much more rewarding seeing those swings and literly seeing that hp bar go down.

I am not at endgame knowledge, my highest job is a lvl 52 rdm and i am trying to lvl most of my other jobs to at least 30 (unless i love them in which case i will sooner or later take them to 50 then 75)
I have in that limited period of time playing been angry at RMT's for makin' it soooooo damn'd hard to make some honest cash in game without resorting to Pl'in for money or Selling Tele's or selling raises.
(All of which are legit ways to earn some gil, but i would rather make it by selling useful items on AH -synth stuff or armor and scrolls droped from mobs)
I have joined LS's and then had to leave them because the LS has a collective mentallity of a 5year old.
I have been in crap pt's where they will sacrifice you (usually they are all mates except for me) or just don't bother to keep me alive.
I had one pt when i was a 20 whm and the pt (or maybe just the tanks or whatever) let me keep hate from healing ... needless to say i died in like 3-5 attacks.
True there are (and probably will always be) those uncouth individuals that make you want to pull your hair out and yell at your monitor and all sorts of other stuff ... but F. them !
You gotta play for your own enjoyment ... atleast thats what i think.

Once you hit 75 and join a sky and cop ls which also probably hunts HNM, be prepared to wait long for rare ex abj and weapon and armor drops unless you have more points than the next person who also wants that drop.
To put it in short, you will spend 2-3 nights a week normaly from 5 or 7pm til about 2-3 am, running around trying to pop and kill weak nm's who in turn drop items you need to pop so called harder nm's which are gods, between this time you will be waiting on half arsed people which you probably need just to help kill or make these fights easier.
On top of that if you also do HNM camping, get a gameboy or some junk because you will be waiting at pop locations for a hell of a long time and competing vs botters and idiots and also other good players, sometimes you claim and get $%^& all sometimes you get a drop and this normaly gets split and gil gets handed out in an even manner.
Also be prepared for fellow ls members and leaders to ask you to drop a party or anything else to come do this or that, this is end game it wont change and is like this because at this point in time everyone and their brother are doing the exact same thing.
Your not missing much.

Something tells me i will probly gain high blood pressure from prolong'd exposure to this game  ... or
But i am hoping to get the fun stuff first (lvling, farming, etc. with friends) before i decide to take on the crazy world of end game ...
I have seen the chaos of NM hunting between my LS (Tokinmobile) and the evil RMT's ... and if that wasn't bad enough, sometimes you don't get the drop ...
Wish it was better than it is, but life's a real bi-a-tch ... i don't have a witty way to finish that :(
anyway ... i gotta go (werk is over YAY)
Hang in there buddy and i hope to chat with ya later :)
Peace
