Well I've downloaded GIMP yesterday. (After uninstalling in frustration) and 've had another crack at it. This is what I've produced. Alot of them are crap, but I reckon there are some decent ones in there.

Gimme your opinons. Critism or complimentary.

http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/5258/unifireur3.png -Didnt cut render TOO well, hopefully no1 notices :rolleyes2
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/9340/thedeadpaladinij1.png - Text is hard to read, gotta fix that
(Didn't notice how poorly that render was cut, *removes*)
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/3482/theringcw7.png - Wait a sec, this is renderless too. That's 2 then.
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2446/juggayh7.png - These next 3 is after i've downloaded a huge brush pack. So there are obvious improvements.
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/262/spidermands8.png - Dedicated to my idol, owen. Lol. (i remeber him liking spiderman, perhaps not)

Thanks pal. I'm on a rampage at the moment of making sigs. I made these all today. I'll try and keep up with Owen. (speed wise, not quality wise. Quality wise is impossible)

The second, third and spiderman ones are the best. Keep up the awesome work Thorn-o. Oh, and a border would make them perfect for sure! *dances*

Thanks alot everyone, was a bit nervous making this thread. But you've all been very positive so thankyou.

I dont have any border brushes, must find some.

Really? What program do you use?

Thorn

GIMP

ShunNakamura
08-24-2006, 07:58 AM
I know that the common 'border' for new sig people is to use stroke in paintshop. GIMP does have a stroke feature... though I don't know if it can be used in the same way as in photoshop.... Heck I am working on a new sig so I will just try that sometime while working on it and get back. Unless of course you are talking about another type of border.

Edit-- Alright I looked at it in a test. It isn't really any different then a photoshop stroke border. Just increase the canvas size by 2 pixels in width and height(or more if you want a wider border). Make sure you sig is centered on the canvas, then use the magic wand to select your sig(make sure it doesn't select transparant areas) and then stroke it however you wish.

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/1153/captainamericapw2.pngThis is quite good if I may say so myself. I've used your border advice Fiona and Shun. I tried out this resizing theory, seemed to work. But didnt get too into it. Just a standard black border. Ill do some more later.

Cheers.

EDIT- Thanks Yunas. (didn't see ya msg) But theyre hardly amazing. Im probally ranked like 694th on the forum at the moment.lol. Gotta improve.

Yays, you are here!!!.
I like this last oen verymuch, your work is amazing you just started but you make very good sigs, I like them all, but my fav by far is the abstract, rendrless on in the first post, awesome job, keep up your great work, you will improve fast. :D

And you are right, I do like spiderman. :D

This one is from my favourite NON square enix RPG. Star Ocean - Second story. I've taken my 3 fav characters, claude, rena and dias and put them in a semi collage. Though the color green isnt associated much with the game, I thought it was best for the sig.

I can make better, but before I go to bed, ill spit this out.

i thought star ocean was square enix lol you'll catch up to the 'godlike' owen soon enough.. go for quality not speed, there's no point making hundreds of signatures if they're all 'okay' :P and good work gimp is really annoying to use to me.. although im used to photoshop so.. :P

You're probally thinking of Breath of Fire. Often mistaken for eachother. Similiar games I guess.

Yeh your probally right, lately ive used like 12/14 sigs ive completed. I only scrapped 2. A couple of the sigs above did not deserve to be posted.

From now on ill only post my best.

I like this one :p. The only thing that feels off about it is the text. Though that may be purely because I am used to trying to blend the text alot myself[that or the fact that I try to avoid putting the text on top of my renders]. I was going to say that perhaps star ocean being verticle on the right side(going down) would be better.... however, I can't figure out verticle text in GIMP(cept rotating the text layer[which wasn't the type of verticle I was meaning] or trying to line it up one letter at a time...).

Thanks everyone. Your reviews encourage me to make more. Cheers.

Yeh Shun. I'm also often discouraged to put text on renders. But I just NEEDED text to sort've like...advertise one of my favourite games. I like it's unblendedness, but sometimes I do blend text.

Anyway heres my latest one, made it for my sister.
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/9199/shirleymansonmx5.png

I aint a big fan of shirely manson but I actually like this a bit. Though the left renzer is a tad small. Ah well.

so cool sigs,
how do you download GIMP? i tryed and it said it can't work

ShunNakamura
08-26-2006, 08:34 AM
The one you made for you sister is real neat :D. Though I do agree with you on the left render. However, it isn't like it really hurts it.

As for downloading and installing GIMP.

1)Go to http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html.
2)Depending on your version of windows download the appropriate Runtime Package.
3)Download "The Gimp For Windows" on that page.
4)Unzip the Runtime enviroment(gtk+-2.8.18-setup-1.zip or gtk+-2.6.10-20050823-setup.zip depending on your version of windows) and the Gimp installer(gimp-2.2.13-i586-setup-1.zip).
5)Once unzipped install the Runtime enviroment first(gtk+-2.8.18-setup-1.exe or gtk+-2.6.10-20050823-setup.exe).
6)Install the gimp(gimp-2.2.13-i586-setup-1.exe).

Itd be even better if I had green goblin. But I simply couldn't find a good enough picture. So that doctor guy from spiderman can go in. Cause hes got a green cloak. (lmao)

Erm...pretty simply, tried a border, it's pretty lame, but looked good wen I first made it. Now that I look at it, im a bit "hmmmm" but too late now. Couldn't find room for text so I didnt bother.

EDIT - almost forgot to mention Vinnie's minnie. He made this background here and i'd like to give him full credit for it. Thanks pal.

ShunNakamura
08-26-2006, 10:23 AM
It is indeed a good sig. And I agree Trying to force text into it would be bad.

As for the border. It ain't too bad, though I am sure you can do better :D. At the least you tried something different.

With the wolverine one. I think its ok. I would've liked to include some text, but i've learnt that that isn't always possible.

The squall and zack one isnt as good I dont think. The text is semi corny, and insignificant. Though I like its font. As for the squares, I think theyre a bit distracting. But this is what I got.

The Wolverine one is definately ok. And I agree, putting text into it could be problematic to say the least.

I agree on all accounts :D. Though I will add I think the background is bit plain.

Thorn
08-28-2006, 12:37 PM
I was aiming for it to be plainish. Simplicity can be very powerful sometimes. But I guess the customers are always right (though this is hardly a shop, but you know what I mean).

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/7885/ironmanjg2.png

This sig is built mainly on the render. No real blending or effects. The quality has definatley been reduced upon uploading. Is there a particular file I should save them as? I always save as bmp. Anyway I like it, downloaded about 50 more texts. They'll come in handy.

I'll have a larger showcase tommorrow, feel a bit dodgy just producing one after two days. Been busy.

Thankyou.

EDIT - My weakness is cutting of renders. It's late. I think I missed a few little cranies.

I'm really sorry.Lmao. What is this? the 3rd time ive mistaken a girl for a guy on this forum? It's not my fault damnit! All the other gaming forums have like 85% males. Perhaps FF is different.

Anyway thanks for your kind words vinnie. They're taken on board.

Just out've interest. Will you be entering the Owen comp? I know its early, but i've watched each round as judge. And now I wanna compete! I dropped out've last round. This time ill enter, and WIN!..................the 'crappest sig' award

I like the aquares in te Squall and Zack one, though yes the BG is plain.
the other one, is cool like the BG, and the brown :D is nice, you just need to work on the blending though you said you didn't care about it.
you are going all along a right way, nice products man.
for best qualities use Png to save the files, byt png is most of the time is a file size large. I don't know if gimp saves as png or no.
cool work. :D

The crapest sig award, Lol. I am sure you'd win something, dude.

Thorn-o, love the Wolverine one. Are you sure you just started getting into sig making?

Thorn
08-29-2006, 06:26 AM
Started about 8 days ago and having alot of fun. I learnt alot by watching others. This is about the only forum I come to these days.

(Getting tired of the ff7 polls 'tifa or aeris' and ect.)

Png ay? Ill try that out. Currently using bmp, and that sig was like 5x better on my program, till I uploaded it.

EDIT -

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/3748/batman3pz1.png

yeh png seems to have made little difference. This ok I guess. THe lightning is a little corny, but i lowered its opacity to make it less bold. There were no good body shots of batman, so had to use two similar renders. Oh and that square thingy is a technique I saw owen use. Just letting you know. ;)

Cool!!! I like it Thorn, but work alittle more on the belding and you should be ok!.
Let's see the thunder is quiet great, but if you have made it electric blue it would have looked cooler, yellow stand out wierd here.
And these squares I use are brushs, nothing creative. :D

Good that you are having fun, that's why I make sigs and it is better than working to be the best, work to have fun not to be the best. :)

PS: This is the longest post I ever made, so be honored.
