We all know that this installment of Final Fantasy doesn't use the traditional summons, but has spawned its own.I loved that Square decided not to use the traditional summons because it's nice to see new summons.Don't get me wrong,I love the series staples like Bahmut,Shiva etc. It's just nice to see new summons.

But from what I understand, some FF fans don't think like me.They hate the new summons(Espers are what they're called in this game)and want back Bahamut,Shiva etc.

I was just wondering:What do you guys think?

Ifrit,our usual fire summon...

...Compared to Belias, the Esper of fire.

Ramuh, the old guy with a knack for lightining...

...Compared to Adrammelech,a lizard with a shocking personality.

Shiva,the original ice queen...

...Compared to Mateus,a frosty mermaid.

Alexander,a robot we've grown to love...

...Compared to Ultima,an angel.(And my personal favorite Esper)

DISCUSS.

They're all cool, IMO. And honestly, I anticipate the new ones will be incorporated as standard summons in later FFs.

It was fun to see they're being called Espers again.

It hasn't really spawned its own, it borrows summons from FFT, FFTA, and some other random cameos (ExDeath).

I don't mind the new ones, but I'd prefer the others, personally.

Yeah I know,

Chaos is from FFI

Ultima is from FFT

Zeromus is from FFIV etc.

I just forgot to add that in.:p

Ouch!

I think they certainly look cooler, but I don't expect they'll make a return unless a later title takes place in another Ivalice.

I think they're awesome, and personally I don't think of it as any different. That Mateus, who I'd like to think is another version of Shiva smurfing rocks.

Yeah I heard that there are better strategies in battle. Sort of like when you have a big party and you have a character that you don't really use because the other characters are more effective.

Yes, but that's not really different from other FF, honestly. Can someone tell me of an FF they couldn't have beaten without summons? They only become really, really useful in the dark aeons' quest in FF X when you're against a dark aeon that's about to use an overdrive that may hit your whole party otherwise. And that's about the only time I can think about

I saw Fran use a move that looked distinctly like diamond dust in a trailer once. So maybe the old summons live on within the characters?

Vivisteiner

Apparently, most of the time, summoning them is a waste of a whole mp bar, as they do too little damage for the mp used. Unlike in other FFs. The same thing has been said of mist knacks.

Even though FFVIII could've been defeated without GFs, it was a really hard task.

That's one of Fran's Mist Quickenings, and it isn't ice elemental. Although, it really resembles Shiva's Diamond Dust in FFX...

I think it's time they gave the summons a revamp. I mean, fair enough having the same names so you know which summon is which, but they always look the same and do the same thing. It's nice to have something new.

That would be so smurfing cool. I vote Vaan for be Valefor. XD But yeah, that's probably not the case.

Well, I love those new Summons (Mateus and Chaos mainly <3), but since I didn't play XII, I can't have an opinion about them being useful or not.

But in other FFs, usually, Summons (the command; it's obvious that Espers and GFs _are_ essential, for magic and Junction, respectively) never were THAT useful. Mainly in FFIV, where Square made the stupid error of putting Rydia in the Black Mage/Summoner class. Lv3 elemental spells, Meteo and maybe Flare outclass Leviathan and Bahamut (the only two summons that are worth your attention, damage-wise). And aside of "FFII" of SNES, Asura is not so useful. I mean, I've yet to find a usefulness for Protect in this game. Or a situation where Asura's multitarget revive comes just when you need it. @_@

And, why would FFXII 's Summons be useless? What do they do in battle? I can't find a good explanation, not even on GameFAQs.

although there not the same as ones in other FFs there still really good. i think its good that there making new ones and they seem seriously cool. sure bahamut and alexander would be nice but you cant have everything. im sure the new ones will make the game great.

I really like that they're bucking the Efreet/Shiva/etc. trend in order to pay respect to relatively underappreciated games such as FFIV and FFT. Also, it was stated in an interview that their specific reason for placing former villains in the role of summoned beasts was to give the players of the original games the sense that they're controlling something truly powerful, which is a pretty clever tactic.

When they are summoned (using a full mp bar), they replace two characters. The summoner is left with the summon. The summoner can heal the summon as the summon fights. The summon will attack the enemies until their timer runs out, or they die. If their timer runs out, they do an awesome finishing move. Apparently, the summons tend to be of little use against enemy bosses - hence my disappointment.

I think the new Summons/Espers are alright, though a problem I have is how Chaos, Zeromus, Exdeath, Adrammalech and Altima don't really look like what they did in FFI, FFIV, FFV and FFT (unless Altima is based on FFTA's Altima, not FFT's), so if it wasn't for their names, I couldn't recognize this tribute to the older FFs.

I went digging and discovered that some Espers won't do their finishing move until certain requirements are met.

For example:Ultima will only perform her finishing move(Perfect Ultima),unless her AND the summoner's HP is at critical levels.

Zodiac will only perform his special move(Last Eclipse),if the summoner is petrified.

They're are some others too.

I miss Ramuh. I mean, how sweet would it be to have Old Man Ramuh and his wicked staff follow you around obliterating your enemies... Or Shiva floating around in her near naked glory. Ifrit, meh, I could do with or without.

i just miss Old Man Ramuh really, because he is teh sweet summon of DEATH!

Mateus is suppossed to be a shield for the real emperor, or something like that, so you only see the female, whilst the male hides in her (?).

I love the designs of the new summons, and can't wait to see them in-game, but I as well got more excited at having the chance to see the terms "esper" and "magicite" used again after so long.
