I'm sorry to say so, but silent oil is almost always a loss. The problem is that people around level 100 have a much higher HQ rate and set the market. Many RMT have gotten into this and don't mind synthing for razor thin profit margins. So unless you are on the highest HQ tier you are unlikely to make much money on oils.

The first reliable HQ tier imo is when you are 31 levels above a cap. Your HQ rate is about 1/3. There is a tier where you are 11 above, but it's definitely nothing to rely on. Beyond that there seem to be tiers at 51, 71 and 91. Well the top Alchemists are 71 over and will HQ1, HQ2 and HQ3 frequently. So getting 1/3 HQ1s probably won't mean much profit on consumable goods.

When looking to make money from crafting try to steer away from things you think will be profit because they have big price tags. I remember a lot of people noting the expense of Snipers Rings and Scorpion Harness and wanting to level their respective crafts because obviously it's huge profit and everyone wants them. This is far from the truth. Of then the material for such things are far more expensive than the resulting product. For high level crafters it's a gamble as to whether or not they can HQ it because that is where all of the profit lies for such items.

However, the same can be said for low level consumables that seem to fly off the AH. While you might spend a ton on silent oil and think it is lucrative often it's best to look toward other recipes. At lower levels it's a good idea to aim at things that most higher level crafters don't want to spend the time to make. A perfect example is Bronze Ingots. You can spend about 1k on a stack of crystals and 500 gil on various ores at the guild to make a stack of ingots that are worth 12k. 10k+ profit isn't bad for 12 synths. Bronze Ingots aren't HQable and so higher level crafters would rather buy them than waste their time making them.
