View Full Version : Butz, Bartz, or other...?

What I find quite interesting is that in the propaganda shots of FFV in Japan, they have the main character's name written as "Butz", yet Square-Enix's official translation is "Bartz".

To be honest, I'm not too fond of either name; they're not very attractive. My question is, why not play around with the name to try and get some other spellings from it, yet still maintain most of what you want it to sound like?

My suggestions:
Bartsch - Kind of German-sounding, but I think this spelling's worse...
Bertz - Not bad...

Yeah, I know that list is really short and kind of lame, so I was wondering what some of your ideas would be. Be creative! Have fun!

Besides 'Batz', which some come up with from his kana, I just use his official name, Butz.

Can't argue with a cute little chibi pewter figurine. :cat:

i like bartz and butz. i prefer bartz but i dont see whats wrong with them. bertz doesnt suit the kind of thing bartz does (what with all the saving the world.)

The name Butz is way cooler than the character it dresses, which is saying quite a bit about the name.

I generally name the protagonist after myself, out of old habit and to see which file is mine. I really need to stop that considering how most protagonists are really annoying. Butz and whoever's the protagonist in FFVI being an exception, of course. :love:

I prefer Butz to Bartz. I just don't like Bartz since it makes me think of Bart Simpson, and that is horrible. I mean, just think about it: Bartz "Bart Simpson" Klauser, the Red Mage guy who ended up with three princesses. :p Batz isn't bad if you could rename Galuf "Robin" and Cara "Batgurl". :D

I remember reading somewhere that Butz' name was changed to Jason.

what? where did you hear this? it could be something to do with the anthologies version. on FF5 anthologies (the european anthology.) the main character doesnt have a name (but i call him bartz anyway.) are you sure that isnt just someone deciding to call bartz jason?

This walkthrough (http://www.gamewinners.com/faq.php?game=f/FinalFantasy5-MMoogle.txt) refers to Bartz as Jason. I'm not sure if he just changed Bartz name to Jason. There's no mention of the name Butz or Bartz in that walkthrough.

I just realized...it doesn't really matter what you name the main character as. FFV was not all that great to me. :p

This walkthrough also uses the names "Leena" and "Gaulf". I wouldn't trust it.

I prefer Butz, but I used Bartz in FFV:A because it's the default.
