AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1): Anti spyware and virus protection. And many will tell you that AVG is comparable, if not better, than most programs that you have to buy.

SpyBot (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html) : Scans very quickly yet is incredibly thorough, and even has some opions that allow you to deal with the registry

Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/): Provides advanced protection from known data-mining, aggressive advertising, Trojans, dialers, malware, browser hijackers, and tracking components.

You also may want to get a Firewall, like ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp), to safeguard you against other malicious attacks or programs installing themselves, accessing the internet, etc...

Additionally, I would suggest using FireFox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) since it's security measures are so much further along than that of IE, not to make mention of all the other useful features it has, and IE does not.

So, yeah, that ought to help you...

Very true, but I figured that it would be conveniant to have him visit the link that showed both considering how marvelous AVG and ewido really are. It's made by the same company (Grisoft) but is titled as being ewido (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/ewido-anti-spyware-free/lng/us/tpl/v5) to differentiate it from AVG in terms of virus and spyware.

And he needs to have AVG anyways, simply because it rocks.

The funny thing about spyware is that sometimes it comes bundled with viruses.

free.grisoft.com also has an ewido spyware program on the page. You get full featured for 30 days, then it turns into a freeware version, like AVG. Like mentioned above. From what I hear, it is prodigy of tool, and lightyears ahead of anything else.

PS: Adaware fucking sucks.

AVG has been tripping up as of late, though they maintain thier 100% detection awards. Thier linux port is also shaky, and only comes with an RPM download *--:(--> . If anything else, I would download ClamAV from portableapps.com and keep a copy of that updated and scan the computer with that once in a while as well.
