I couldn't believe it when I saw he had died. Steve Irwin, dead. I still cannot believe it. I actually at first thought it was a joke, but then I got a text from a friend saying he had died, which I guess only confirmed it. As I come from Australia, everyone is talking about it. I go to tell someone, and they already know. Everyone is really sad about this, he was such a great ambassador for Australia, and one of the most true Aussie's we have had in a long time.

Just woke up this morning to this shocking news on TV. Very sad.

Although people are somewhat surprised he got killed by a Stingray, Steve Irwin, the man who seemed immune to all dangerous creatures gets killed by something that is hardly dangerous at all, in fact, Steve is the first person to get killed by a Stingray in the last 60 years, he'd be the last person I'd expect to be killed by Stingray.

Edit: It wasn't just the fact that he took danger head on that makes him so cool. It was the fact that he was such a genuine guy and one of the best icons for Australia, and he'll be missed a lot throughout not just Australia, but the world.

Although I disagreed with some of what he did with animals at times. He helped stop those despicable "Crocodile safaris" from going ahead. My dad discussed the issue with several wildlife conservationalist charities, an not just were they not even aware of the issue, but as far as I know they didn't even get involved. So it's a shame he died. He genuinely cared about the animals conservation. Unlike many people that work with animals in television, who are only in it for the money, an have no consideration for the animals involved.

Sincerely, I thought that this was a joke when I first heard it. I still can't believe that he died from a stingray. However, I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have an underlying feeling that this would happen to him one day. But still, he was a great man, to say the least. I tire of all the people chiming in with anything to the effect of "it was bound to happen sometime" Ok dont know if anyone told you this but death awaits us all, it will happen to us all "eventually". Just remember its not how long you live its what you do with it, and frankly I think this guy's got us all beat out with that. He put his heart and soul into something he was very passionate about. People critisize him for needlessly putting himself in harms way of animals just for the sake of good television and therefore label him as some kind of Aussie "hack". It's my humble opinion all he was trying to do was to build awareness for these animals in ways that people just quite hadn't experienced before, in other words he was probably acutely aware of how prone we Americans are to not giving a damn especially when it comes to things like animals and the environment and such things so that he came up with a way that actually GRABBED our attention and guess what? It worked.

I get worked up when I read negative posts about a guy that committed himself so much to such a good cause. While his death was untimely, its no reason at all to ridicule what he did with his life as "stupid" and "bound to happen". It's one thing to die, its another to truly live.

I've talked to many Aussies about him in the past and at the time almost every one claimed they considered him as much an Aussie "hack" who gave them a bad rep as any skeptic American thought. At any rate, his overenthusiasm that sometimes seemed to border abuse was his way of trying to make wildlife as fun and exciting to his viewers as it was to him. And the money he made from his popularity was poured into conservation efforts including a ton of land he purchased for animal reserves. While he may have been a thrill-seeker, what he chose to make due with that was unselfishness to the greatest degree, and he should be commended and remembered for those efforts.

While I agree with all his efforts and passion (he was described to have a great deal of attachment to many many animals, not just crocs and snakes), I just want to say something about Australians. We did love him, and I know there were a minority that didn't, just because of the image he had potrayed internationally. Which I really didn't see a big deal in.

I can't believe what I saw on TV last night, whether you did like him or not. An English women actually said he got what he deserved, and that he was cruel to animals (which is not true, I can assure you). I guess it was fine in that nothing she said could be justified or backed up though -- but I can't believe you'd have such an opinion on someone like that, without ever meeting them or knowing fully what they have done for the world. Not to mention the fact that she had spoken out to the media about this just after his death.

I'm also not very fond of a lot of the American kids I see around a few forums I visit -- who are actually making jokes and laughing about this. What the hell? Someone has died.

Yes, there's video of it. It'll be shown to police and someone on TV said "maybe a few close friends," but... I can't imagining them wanting to see it. Maybe the part after the stingray hit him where they're trying to save him, but even that seems like it would be too much to me.
