View Full Version : Money, Money, Money!

Time for another Poll! This one is a morality question.

You're walking down the street when you see a wallet lying around. There is no else on the street. You pick up the wallet, open it and oooooh! There is £200 in the wallet! (Or $200 for you Americans, or 200 euros for all you other Europeans :D Or... convert into your own currency if you are neither a Brit, American or European )

Now, obviously, this cash is not yours. You look inside for contact information on whose wallet it could be and there's nothing. So what do you do? Do you go to the police and hand it in as lost property? Do you wait around on the street for a while longer and hope someone comes back for it?

Or do you use the money your own way? Do you donate the cash to charity? Or do you go on a spending spree and waste the cash on the best charity cause there is: Yourself!

I would donate the cash to charity because that way it's going to a good cause. If I handed the cash to police, the cops might spend it on themselves. This way, my consience (<--- don't know how to spell that word) is clear

Over to you...

I will bury it somewhere and draw a treasure map so that future generations can go on an adventure looking for it.

I'd spend it on my friends. I wouldn't spend it on myself because I already spend too much money on myself... my friends spend too much money on me, too. Also, I've lost a wallet before and never had it returned—therefore not wanting to turn it in due to lost faith in the system.

It's mine now - I'll do as I see fit, whatever that implies.

Life isn't fair, and I got lucky at that moment, so I'm taking that rare occassion.

Whether or not I spend it on my family or friends... Not sure, but what I do know is that I would take it and eventually spend it.

I would have no qualms concerning my decisions.

Deliever to the police probably would be the right optin but i don't really know if they would deliver the money to the person... But if I'd get insane and kept the money I'd give it to charity

Hand it in to the police. I consider all the other options stealing

...and the last one a bit stupid :p

I know the right thing to do would be turn it in, so, I like to think I'd do that.

I'd hand it in to the appropriate area (police or lost and found), money and all.

As tempting at that last one is(DEVIL MAN). I'll just keep the money and blow it off on stupid /xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif/xxx.gif, but hey thats just me.

I would give it to the police/receptionist/etc, provided it wouldn't involve too much time and effort from my part.

What kind of wallet doesn't have ID? Pfft. If it had ID I'd return it but if it didn't $200 isn't worth the effort, so I'd keep it.

Anyone who says they'd turn it into the police is either a liar or Loony BoB.

Hand it into the police. First i'd see if the wallet has any clues on contact information.

Well, i would take the money, and give wallet to police. Maybe leave a little bit cash in there. Then i would spend money on clothes :D

200 dollars is a lot of money, so I would hand it in to the police.

If there's no one to claim the wallet and money, then the money is mine. :) The wallet, however, I'll likely turn that in the lost and found.

Finder finds wallet.
Finder takes money and spends it.
Finder hands in wallet to police.
Police hand wallet to Owner.
Finder discovers the next day that their friend is Owner and Owner is crying their heart out about how they are being evicted from their flat because they lost $200 in their wallet and got their wallet returned but the money had been stolen and now they can't pay their rent.

You find it, good for you. But that doesn't make you any less a common thief if you spend the money.

Someone stole my wallet. It isnt nice ;____;

It fell out my pocket, and a man picked it up, someone saw them and told me.

that's tough...never been faced with this decision so i'm not sure, but i think it really depends on my financial situation, it's sad but if i felt that i needed the money i would keep it

My_car_is_faster_than_you
09-12-2006, 05:06 PM
Well, I was faced with returning a lost item (which i really wanted to keep) and keeping it. I kept it and felt so guilty that I couldn't stand it, so I finally returned it to a lost and found area. I think, to avoid guilt, I'd return it.

I've also stolen a car before (and had it in my garage). I also had a guilty conscious, so I figured I should return it. Well, I couldn't find the owners, so I turned it over to the impound. See what an angel I was?

Hand it in to the police. All the other options are stealing and if no one claims it after a certain period of time, you get it for yourself anyway. :p

Agent Proto
09-12-2006, 05:33 PM
BoB, I wouldn't spend the money right away. I'll just hold onto it if no one is claiming it immediately. Their loss really if I do happen to spend it. And if the owner of the wallet was someone I know, if I have the money, I'll hand it back, all or what's left of the money.

But really, how would the police find the owner of the wallet if there's no form of identification/contact information?

I'm greedy, the coins are mine. Notes are too big and would weigh on my conscience. But i'd nick the coins and hand the rest in at the station or at the nearest shop.

Peegee
09-12-2006, 05:35 PM
I'd keep it.

If I came across a bag of 500 000$ I'd turn it in.

But 200$ it's mine

MINEEEE

moral question? Yeah there's probably one in there. I'd answer differently if I had to defend it with moral arguments. The above behaviour I can't justify logically.

Oh my god. Giving it to the police is no good. I'd rather give it to charity.
Also, I would first make sure that I was not on some hidden camera show. My brother found a 1000 kr bill (700 dollars) on the ground, and he bought tons of toys and candy for it. He was 12 at the time, so who could blame him. If I found it while hanging out with friends, I'd totally buy everyone a meal or a big ice cream, depending on the amount of money.

Is it 200 dollars or euro? That might be a big enough difference to persaude my decision.

I'd kid myself into not feeling guilty by spending the money on new hospital beds for the elderly patient ward at my local krankenhaus.

09-12-2006, 05:59 PM
As $200 doesn't count alot where I live, then I will drop it back on the ground and walk my way. I know that's not an option, but that's what I'd probably do.

Pete for President
09-12-2006, 06:21 PM
I'd spend on family and friends I guess. Probably some rounds of beer and a present for my mum. yup.

Anyone who thinks that the police would make ANY effort to return money to someone who doesn't have ID is nuts. That just won't happen. They'd keep it for themselves and buy donuts or something.

If I found the wallet, I'd wait around to see if anyone came back for it. But if they didn't, I'd take it and use it to pay for my bills.

I've lots money plenty of times (not my wallet, actual bills that fell out from my pockets and stuff) and I don't curse the person who might have found the money. It's like, "Crap, this sucks. Oh well."

If I lost my entire wallet, credit cards, ID, and everything. Then I would hope that someone would turn it in somewhere and I can get it back. And if someone finds it and doesn't turn it in, they are a stupid cow. But just a wallet, no ID, and just the money? Taking that is nowhere near the same thing, especially if you make some sort of effort to look around and see if anyone could have potentially dropped it, or wait to see if someone comes back for it.

Handing it over to the police is useless. Might as well give it to charity if you're gonna give it away.

If it were a larger sum of money, like $500+, then it'd be a bigger deal.

$200 = This sucks.
$500+ = omg, panic.

There's a big difference.

I'd take the money (you know, for poker nights and stuff) and hand the wallet in to the police, stating clearly that it was empty when I found it.

I would hand it in to the police, but would have thoughts on what i would spend it on if i did keep the wallet... but then i would feel like a jerk and just hand it in to the police to repent for the previous thought... haha

Recently a friend and I found 125$ blowing around in the middle of the street at about 11:30pm. He saw it first and started running for it earlier, which led to him getting 105$ and I only nabbed 10$ :mad2:

Anyways, the people we *think* dropped it were two fellows on bikes we saw before we went into McDonalds, when we came back out the guys were no where in sight and the money was everywhere on the road.

I spent the money, but only because I couldn't find the owner.

Last week in the mall near my home I saw a guy drop a five-dollar bill, since he was only two feet away I returned it.

In all situations, if I can reach the owner I'll return the money, if not I'll spend away.

This is what I would do. You fill out all of the pertinent paperwork when giving it to the police so they are not going to go spend it on donuts. I don't know what sort of police system you have in California, Miriel, but if the money isn't claimed by someone in 30 days out here, it's then mine legally.

Los Angeles cops are fairly corrupt. My experience with them hasn't been entirely favorable. So yeah.
