SEGA Virtual Console Lineup
Ecco The Dolphin, Altered Beast, Golden Axe and more.
by Matt Casamassina

September 11, 2006 - A recent update by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) has revealed a number of SEGA titles coming to Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console. The classic games include all of the following:

Ecco the Dolphin
Altered Beast
Toe Jam & Earl
Golden Axe
Columns
Sonic the Hedgehog
Ristar

Readers can verify this information for themselves by going to ESRB's official website and doing a search by platform for Wii games.

The fact that these classic games show up for Wii on ESRB's website is a good sign because publishers have to submit their games for the organization's approval prior to their release -- hence, the ESRB would not just create a list like this out of thin air.

Will these titles and more be debuted at Nintendo's Wii event this Thursday? We'll keep you posted.

I wish I knew what Toe Jam & Earl was so I could get hyped. :(

As was said at planetgamecube, the fact that they're getting ESRB ratings now, is a sign that the virtual console may be available this year, maybe even at launch

NOTE: These are all Genesis games, there are plenty of first party Nintendo games which you can safely guess will be available.

You've never heard of Toejam & Earl? For shame. It's only one of the most unique and fun games from the 16-bit era. None of those games really do anything for me, though, since I can either emulate them easily for the Dreamcast or actually own them for the Genesis.

Lack of NiGHTS into Dreams makes Domo-kun angry.

Wow, even I know what ToeJam and Earl is.

Oh, and you might want to use a Slow spell on Kishi, I wouldn't want to upset him while he's holding that rifle.

Goody. SEGA Genesis games for the Wii. I hope we can get some other great classics.

Namely, the Shining Force series, and the rest of the Sonic series.

Ooh, and that wonderful classic game Zero Wing... :D

It's a Saturn game, though. :( There's still hope, though. Maybe it'll come one day, along with the Panzer Dragoon series.

If I could play NiGHTS and/or Panzer Dragoon Zwei, I would purchase a Wii just for that.

Even now though, the greatest appeal the Wii holds for me is the catalogue of older games like this.

fruhicken right. Toe Jam and earl was one of the greatest things to come out of the 16-bit era. The second one kinda sucked, but the first... freaking priceless.

Namely, the Shining Force series, and the rest of the Sonic series.

werd.

When I frist read the thread, I thought they were all getting remakes. Now a remake of this list would ensure nintendo a vicotry!

The Virtual Console *will* be ready at launch. This is a sign that these games in particular may be available around launch, but the system itself will be there on day 1.

The Wii actually has much more potential for unique gameplay experiences on account of the input device it uses.

Unique gameplay experiences like tennis elbow, RSI syndrome, and bloody knackered arms?

Yeah, about as much as a traditional controller gives you carpal tunnel syndrome.
