In one of yesterday's articles, AllRPG reported that Square-Enix had recently trademarked the name Heroes of Mana. Before now, it was not clear whether it was a replacement for Friends of Mana, or whether it was a brand new title.

NeoGAF, after translating this week's issue of Famitsu, reports that Square-Enix has confirmed this title as a game for the Nintendo DS. While the details are sparse, there have been a few things revealed about this new DS game.

First of all, the game will include both RPG elements and real time strategy elements. The scenario is being worked on Masato Kato (Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 4), Ryoma Ito (Final Fantasy Tactics) and Akira Oguro (Final Fantasy X) are working on the character designs, the music is being composed by Yoko Shimomura (Mana series, Parasite Eve), and the game's producer is Koichi Ishii.

So far, Square-Enix has not announced a release date for Heroes of Mana for both US and Japan. Hopefully Square-Enix will release some more details and images of this game in action in the near future.

I'm not much for RTS games, but the pedigree is right. Still missing Hiroki Kikuta as composer, but that's sadly to be expected.

RTS game with Leveling up and and RPG stats? WHAT? Is this going to be a bootleg Warcraft III/Star Craft type game?

Can't afford it, too many things coming out this year. However I might start thinking about it, would be useful to have a handheld system rather than a bulky PS2. What do they run for nowadays?

They are deffinatly worth every cent. I must say, with Children onf Mana on it's way, and Heros of Mana now confirmed, the only thing Mana related that could make me happier is a Legend of Mana port to the DS.

Square has released some new screenshots (http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=6941) for the Tokyo Game Show. It looks like the environments are polygonal, so you should be able to rotate them like in Final Fantasy Tactics.

Oh, and two screenshots from Seiken Densetsu 3 were included in the package, but they don't have the Super Famicom's resolution of 256x224. Instead, their resolution is 512x384, which is exactly twice the DS's resolution of 256x192.

This could be a clue.

Those screenshots are very, very tantalizing.

And the prospect of Seiken Densetsu 3 on the DS does things to me that nobody else can come close to.

It brings joy in places you can't describe. :D

Edit: Bump & check the TGS trailer:

Also, the official site (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/mana) has info about Heroes of Mana now. And also has the TGS trailer for Seiken 4.

I've never really gotten into the series, but with so many games coming out in the near future, I think that's going to change. A RTS/RPG blend sounds absolutely delicious.

Doesn't look that great. Not on par with Legend of Mana.

Legend of Mana's graphics were lovingly detailed, hand-drawn 2D. You can't possibly compare them to low-res polygons. Apples and oranges.

Not just that. The whole scenery and how the gameplay looks doesn't look that great.

Looks confusing. That's probably just the Japanese text scarring my brain though.

It looks interesting. An RTS on a handheld system seems a little crazy to me, but they might be able to pull it off.

I still wish they'd rerelease Secret of Mana though. That was my favorite of the series.

*worlds saddest face*
A peice of my heart just broke off. I was just talking about how I didn't like battle systems like that, just like.... 10 minutes ago. It -looks- pretty, but I don't think I'll feel very pretty inside playing it.
*walks slowly back to the Children of Mana thread where she makes her home, hoping to never hear of this blasphemy again*

I've managed to play this a little bit (I know someone with hax), just through the tutorial stage. It's pretty solid.

Square-Enix has announced today two big things for RPG fans. First, they will be bringing the DS strategy RPG, Heroes of Mana, to North America. In addition to that, they have also announced a release date for the upcoming PS2 RPG, Dawn of Mana, which is May 22nd. For those that buy Dawn of Mana, they will get Breath of Mana, a sampler disc that contains soundtrack selections originally released in Japan. That offer is available for those that purchase from Amazon.com, Game Crazy, GameStop, and EB Games.

"The two latest entries in the World of Mana series push the boundaries established in past titles to provide players with a new gaming experience inside a familiar setting," said Koichi Ishii, creator of the World of Mana series. "Dawn of Mana sets itself apart from action-RPGs of the past as an action-adventure game with an emphasis on action while Heroes of Mana, a strategy RPG, introduces entirely new real-time strategy elements to the series."

As mentioned earlier, Dawn of Mana will be released on May 22nd, and Heroes of Mana will be hitting stores sometime this summer.
