You've never played this game and yet you think you can judge this game fairly and call it "not worth it"?
I don't think so.
If you had played this game you would know how awesome it is. How fun it is to play with other people, with friends. How much this game has to offer, and how it carries on the Final Fantasy tradition just fine.
If you played the game and disliked it, fine. But don't go around blasting this game when you've never even played it. That's just silly.

What hassle?
Again, you're making assumptions based on something you really don't know anything about.
You can get the game + 2 of the expansions for $20 these days. And the $12 monthly fee is equivalent to like 2 meals at fast food place. Really not a significant amount of money. If you can't afford that very small fee, that's your problem, not the game's.

Well, in case you haven't noticed, it's a MMORPG(massive multiplayer online role playing game). You're supposed to pay a monthly fee if you're playing an online game. Don't hate on the game just because you have a problem paying a certain fee. And it is indeed worth the hassle. I own this game for about 5 months and I enjoy it more each time I play it. And like how Miriel said, it carries on the Final Fantasy tradition just fine. So don't bash a game because of silly nonsense
LunarWeaver

I don't own this game either, which is why I have no opinion no it one way or another, but I certainly don't see the monthly fee as a big deal. They need that in order to provide the type of game it is.
The point of an MMO is a long lasting experience that can last years if you want it to. While you're playing FFXI you most likely won't be buying many other games, so in essence that 12 dollars a month is substituting the 50 dollars you'd be paying otherwise.
Not to mention one night at the movies is more than 12 dollars these days. Once a month is looking pretty light compared to that one movie weekend to me.

A lot of people don't like the monthly fee. I think most of the current players were even weary of it before we started playing. That's okay. Not everyone is open to new gaming concepts, especially if it's going to cost a little extra money. Sometimes it's easier to just stick to the tried and true. Why pay for the calamari dish you've never had, when you can get a hamburger for less and know that it's going to be edible?
So don't pay for it, and ignore it's existence. My only advice is that you find something to do in the meantime, because posting threads like this isn't going to get you anywhere. We're not going to stop playing it, and we don't care if you play it or not. There's already been tons of posts saying all the same things. We get it.

If more whiney people joined the game I wouldn't want to play.
Paying a monthly fee is just fine.
I also love when people try to make a valid argument and state one reason while leaving the rest to vague phrases like 'all the hassle'.
If you don't feel like its worth "all the hassle" go play ***EDIT~ Kingdom hearts*** again and leave us out of your inability to pay 12 bucks a month for a MMORPG that is clearly not a "failure to the FF series" (which you would know if you tried it). But I am not here to beg you.
Peace Out,

Let me say this very clearly and simply.
THE PEOPLE THAT SAY THINGS LIKE YOU ARE NOW GET BANNED FROM EoFF!
I've seen it happen a few times now and I know the others have too, so please I am only going to ask you once, don't try to go onto FFXI forums and bash it whether or not you have tried it. It's not polite and only causes drama and noone wants online drama.
If you don't like the game or even the thought of the game just leave it be and don't spam your hatred for it. We enjoy it and just because you don't doesn't mean you have to ruin it for us.

oh dear....
well, its probably one of the better FF games, the storylines provide IMO a far more depth than FFVII.
and yeah, dont judge it... until you play for a loooonnnng time.
and its a very large game (with stuffs continually added in) so youd expect it to take up at least a couple of GB.
its a game, its worth it, it has Bards and Red Mages n_n-b

As one of the biggest advocators of FFXI on this forum since the days of it's earliest tidbits of info, I feel I should say something....that being said I think most everyone covered everything well....EXCEPT!!!! What the fees go towards. >.>
So that being said what does YOUR 12 dollar monthly fee go into?
It goes into the fine 20+ servers, providing us the entertainment of the game, with lot's less lag then many other MMO's out there (SWG comes to mind, with less people in an area, MORE servers then FFXI will EVER have, and STILL had lag out the a@$ on a planet by yourself with no one for light years) If we didn't pay those fine chaps at SE a nominal fee of 12 bucks, we wouldn't have servers.
But WAIT, there's more!
They have to pay the devs to continue to provide us with content for the game. In fact the content they release every month or 2 is probably enough to fill up a normal offline game, considering how much work they put into it.
PLUS there's the dev team that does the system maintenace on the servers, and fixes errors in the games and tests every aspect of the game.
AND the GM team to work on solving players problems and bug that happen on the fly to someone that needs a fast fix. While also dealing with cheaters and botters.
And on top of all that we pay we also get access to a game which have hundreds of times more content then ANY offline game EVER, and will EVER exist. With more play time availability then any other RPG. Heck, I've been playing this game since day one of NA release, (that's 4 years for you whipper-snappers) and I've racked up about 160 days of play time (Note: The timer in FFXI collects your time from the second you long on till you log off, much like in past FF's, but unlike them, the timer converts hours into days. So for me 160ish days of play time is 3840 hours of playing the game)
So needless to say that simple 12 bucks a month is WELL worth the money. This game has the potential to play through that will over shoot every other FF to ever exsist in play time, by entire months of play time over them.
And besides, you also PAY a fee of probably 20 bucks to get online no less. Yet you complain about a game that is easily 20+ games of content molded into one for about 42ish bucks to start up the game.
Geez, people these days just have no sense of economics and value. >.>

Well from my experience the minimal fee only really chases away people less then the age of 15 who can't get jobs, and have an incom of maybe 30 bucks a year from allowances or just grabbing whatever they find on the street. >.>
I've never really understood the debate on the 12 buck fee, there's more fees out there which are higher and worth less. <.<
Besides if he's a young teenager he'll spend that much a day on McDonalds to feed himself for an hour. >.> I know I sure did. <.<

It's all about priorities. Do you enjoy getting piss drunk 4 weeks per month, or is 3 times enough, and then being able to play FFXI aswell? I know what my answer is.
Oh, I think he hates it because he can't afford to play it/his mother won't let him, and therefore needs to convince himself that it sucks, and that he doesn't miss out on anything.

You only have to work 1 hour each month to be able to pay for this game. That's 1 hour out of 720 hours in a month, or 12 hours out of 8640 in a year. Still plenty of stuff to do with the other 8628 hours, like playing FFXI or eating cake. :shifty:

You all really don't know how to spend money it only cost me 4.50 for a movie ticket a drink and a bag of popcorn,m I don't play with muy money why pay $7 for the exp[ensive theatre and $4 dollars for a bag of popcorn when you can bring your own drink for 30cents and a 25 cent bag of popcorn and you can go to the $2 or $3 movie theate and for fast food meals I spend no more $3 bucks on myself, just get 2 things off the 99 cent menu and water and you save money.
$12 a month is too much compared to ho many things I can get with it and I can get a free meal just by picking up free samples. Just ask for a sample at Starbucks and they'll give you a large size for free it's ridiculous when people complain about their price when all they have to do is just ask for a sample.
$12 way too much for this game when you have to buy the modem and all for your PS2.

pharmacists make pretty good money ... at some point there is a line to be drawn between frugal and cheap ... i won't say where that line is, but i make crap as a receptionist and i find $12 (which is definately more than i make in an hour) to be reasonable . (and to let you all know i am a mothu F*^#'n cheap scate !) :D (i shop at thrift stores and savers) and buy hill country fare at the super market .
But i am too cheap to goto a starbucks and even ask for a sample ... i just don't drink coffee >.<

You don't have to buy a modem for your PS2, because you can play on a PC. Also, the network adapter for your PS2 is not for FFXI alone. It enables online play for a lot of other games.
12 dollars isn't a lot of money for most people in first world, as you can get a month of FFXI by working 0.5-1 hour. FFXI is even cheaper than WoW, and WoW has like a million more players. 99% of those who are interested in these sorts of games can afford it, the last 1% is of little consequence to the companies.

It's called a computer.
Now, just because you use food stamps, buy the cheapest food known to mankind, and go to movie theatres in the ghetto, doesn't mean FFXI isn't worth the price tag of $12.99. Let's not even get into you being a female and just because you eat less than others doesn't mean we don't know "how to spend our money". You honestly think every person who walks into starbucks can get a free sample? They'd go out of business if that were true. You just simply do what others don't do because its cheap and embarassing. You take their work, and you request a sample, which is testing or trying something you have yet to try that they're giving away free for "testers" which, in your case, you've already had it, so you simply just want freebees.
Most jobs give atleast 6.99 or 7.00 per hour, thats 2 hours of work a month minus taxes @14.00 - 2.00 = 12.00, you call that too much and not worth it? What else can you do in 2 hours? See a movie? Point proven. The price should have nothing to do with the game itself, especially when theres already games out there with the same price, if not more, per month and thousands don't mind paying it.
It's called an MMO for a reason as others have stated, you get to interact with the outside world, and to be honest, its no different than paying a monthly fee for internet access, or satelite television, in your examples, you're trying to tell us that we can spend our money in better places when we want our toys to play with, such as internet, satelite TV, cellphone, etc. MMO's are no different, they just require time to sit infront of your computer.
This post isn't meant to be offensive, but in the examples Ashley supplied, they deemed necessary to have my point proven. I apologize to anyone who takes this offensive.
