Words change their meaning. Look at gay. It used to mean cheerful, then homosexual, then just plain lame/stupid.

The actual self-harm thing about emo's is actually a misconception. While it's used in emo bands before, if my facts (and why I have any actual facts about emo's I will never know) are right, it's not an actual key competent. Emo's are melodramatic though.

Emos are people who are emo about rock? You do know using the word you're defining in the definition isn't a good idea, right?

Emo is short for emotional. Emo music tends to be melodramatic and depressing. Now the emo music has branched off into a subculture in which the melodrama and 'depression' finds it's way into a person's persona. Self harm is used by bands, but it's not a definite element like a textbook definition.

In short, the emo is incredibly emotional, wear tight (males wear girl) pants, khaki (sp?), black, and other such things. They're also known to be comfortable with homosexuality and being homosexual/bisexual.

Emo still doesn't mean that you dress in tight pants, black, and is comfortable with homosexuality. It means you're very emotional, and that comes in a lot of flavours. Emotional people might want to listen to emotional music, what a shocker... And emotional people might harm themselves because their emotions are sometimes too strong to contain.

I think it's silly to use the term emo to classify a group of people that dress in a particular way or have similiar opinions. It's a state of mind.

You're still defining "emo" by the actual, technical word "emotional". Words are defined often by the intent behind them not the meaning that was established first or the actual word. If I ask somebody to "spoon" I don't mean let's get utensils and clink them together. And if somebody says "emo" they don't mean 'emotional' as in "you're happy lol!" they mean depressed. Just because it spawns from the word emotional doesn't mean that's what people are implying when they say it. People redefine words and the intent behind them change, you can go against the waves all you want but that doesn't change the facts.

Of course, in my day this was an undesirable condition called "depression" that nobody wanted. Yeah those were the good days.

I didn't mean that everyone who is indeed like that is emo. I was referring to what most people who are openly and willingly in the emo subculture are 'like' (I use 'like' very loosely here).

The emo subculture is a stereotype in general, so it's kind of hard for me to describe it without showing too much prejudice. I just meant the emo concept itself, not all the people bearing any sort of characteristic or clothing style are emo. I don't mean to use 'emo' as a loose sort of adjective. Just a cultural trend, one thats has also been distorted into different meaning.

Emotional doesn't automatically mean positive emotions. But sure, I can see your point. Emotional can be a lot, but I think it should mainly be about the emotions of a person, not the way a person dresses.

discuss. Here is a quote from "The State of The Beat"

Courtesy of Urban Dictionary:

An entire subculture of people (usually angsty teens) with a fake personality. The concept of Emo is actually a vicious cycle that never ends, to the utter failing of humanity, and it goes something like this:

1. Girls say they like “sensitive guys” (lie)
2. Guy finds out, so he listens to faggy emo music and dresses like a dork so chicks will see that he is sensitive and not afraid to express himself (lie). He dyes his hair black, wraps himself in a stupid looking scarf, develops an eating disorder, and rants about how “nobody understands”.
3. Now an emo guy, he meets Emo chick and they start dating, talking about how their well-off suburban lifestyles are terrible and depressing (lie)
4. Emo guy is just too much of a pussy. His penis is too small, he’s too depressed to bathe, and has more mood swings than emo chick, and he doesn’t even have a menstrual cycle. Emo chick dumps him, saying “It’s not you, it’s me.” (lie) as she drives off with Wayne, the school jock and captain of the football team.
5. Emo guy goes home and cries, proceeds to write a weak song and strum a single string on his acoustic guitar. Another emo chick sees how he is so in touch with his feelings, and the cycle continues.

This is the sad truth of the emo lifestyle/music, and now that I look at how pathetic it really is, maybe the emos DO have something to cry about!

Here is something from "Label it"

Emo. Short for emotional. Emo. A genre of punk rock. Emo. A dress code of tiny t-shirts and horn-rimmed glasses. Type the word "emo" into your average search engine and you'll get over three million results that will encompass nearly that many different opinions of what emo actually is. The general approach to the term is a lot like the approach to pornography, "I can't tell you exactly what it is, but I'll know it when I see (or hear) it."
The history of emo is somewhat less ambiguous than its current meaning. "Emo" music developed out of the D.C. punk scene in the '80s. In its original incarnation, emo was short for emocore, or emotional-hardcore. The name was applied to hardcore punk rock bands who distinguished themselves from their peers by adding an emotional component to their music, dealing with sadness and love and angst in their lyrics. The music was also characterized by particularly dramatic vocals which, at best, left the audience in an emotionally charged state, crying or screaming. These days, emo has been popularized and sent into the mainstream through bands like Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday and Saves the Day.

Emo music has even inspired its own subcultural style. Take your average Rites of Spring fan and you get someone who looks a lot like Weezer's Rivers Cuomo--nerdy glasses, vintage tees, cuffed jeans, Converse sneakers and slightly shrunken tops. Black hair and straight bangs, tight hoodies and thrift shop attire are also associated with emo. And while emo devotees are notoriously upfront about their feelings, instead of wearing their hearts on their sleeves, they tend to favor ironic slogans and band logos.

Lately, labeling someone as "emo" is something of a put-down, a stand-in for "overly emotional" or "melodramatic." The implication is that they are excessively moody and angsty, prone to crying jags and plagued by a love of bad poetry. Hot Topic even issued a patch that read, "cheer up, emo kid!" But for those who call themselves emo, the term means something more pure. At its core, emo is all about being upfront with your emotions. Or, as one "expert" defined it, "emo is like being Goth, but much less dark, much more Harry Potter." -- marni

So here is a little more on the subject.

P.S. Emo is nothing like goth, who ever thinks that must be living in a fantasy world. Goth is better than emo. And when a goth cuts themself, its a whole helluva lot cooler ! LMAO !

I think its lame. In most cases (well near where I live, atleast) The 'emo' kids are rich, spoiled, and really up-them-selves.

I think if they stopped buying usless band t-shirts and fashion stuff and gave the money to charities then they would really feel alot better.
Your not going to fell any better about youself if you keep yourself in a dark corner all of your teenage days.
Also I don't see why people have to parade your 'label' each and everyday, like all of the emos I have seen think that they are individuals... yet like (estimated percentage) of teenagers these days that are emotional is like 40%. So I don't think that you can be an individual if you act like something so many people are trying to be.

Saying that, I thinks its pathetic for people to try that hard for attention. If so many people suggest that being yourself is the best thing you can do, they would be saying it for a reason.

I call people emo, yes I label people and Im not going to stop labelling people. Ive done it all my life, society has helped me to do so and I shall continue to do so. I too am labelled. I am an emo hater, I personally cant stand some emo music and the fashion makes me so :mad2:. But if people want to be emo thats fine. Just dont try to change my opinion of them.

Emo is just another stupid stereotype that teenagers like to say they are nowadays because they think it's "different" even though no one can really tell one emo apart from another. And yeah, perhaps being emo isn't all about the way they dress, but jesus, maybe if they didn't all dress the same people wouldn't say stuff like emos all wear skinny jeans, stupid hair and eyeliner.

the emo style of music is a hideous damnation among music. The emo "people" well the stereotype is inaccurate, way off. Emos are just fans of emo/pop punk music, not wrist cutting, emotionally challenged depression wh-... obsessives. They do whine alot though.....
