The actual self-harm thing about emo's is actually a misconception. While it's used in emo bands before, if my facts (and why I have any actual facts about emo's I will never know) are right, it's not an actual key competent. Emo's are melodramatic though.

Emos are people who are emo about rock? You do know using the word you're defining in the definition isn't a good idea, right?

Emo is short for emotional. Emo music tends to be melodramatic and depressing. Now the emo music has branched off into a subculture in which the melodrama and 'depression' finds it's way into a person's persona. Self harm is used by bands, but it's not a definite element like a textbook definition.

In short, the emo is incredibly emotional, wear tight (males wear girl) pants, khaki (sp?), black, and other such things. They're also known to be comfortable with homosexuality and being homosexual/bisexual.

You're still defining "emo" by the actual, technical word "emotional". Words are defined often by the intent behind them not the meaning that was established first or the actual word. If I ask somebody to "spoon" I don't mean let's get utensils and clink them together. And if somebody says "emo" they don't mean 'emotional' as in "you're happy lol!" they mean depressed. Just because it spawns from the word emotional doesn't mean that's what people are implying when they say it. People redefine words and the intent behind them change, you can go against the waves all you want but that doesn't change the facts.

Of course, in my day this was an undesirable condition called "depression" that nobody wanted. Yeah those were the good days.

I didn't mean that everyone who is indeed like that is emo. I was referring to what most people who are openly and willingly in the emo subculture are 'like' (I use 'like' very loosely here).


The emo subculture is a stereotype in general, so it's kind of hard for me to describe it without showing too much prejudice. I think its lame. In most cases (well near where I live, atleast) The 'emo' kids are rich, spoiled, and really up-them-selves.

I think if they stopped buying usless band t-shirts and fashion stuff and gave the money to charities then they would really feel alot better.

Also I don't see why people have to parade your 'label' each and everyday, like all of the emos I have seen think that they are individuals... yet like (estimated percentage) of teenagers these days that are emotional is like 40%. So I don't think that you can be an individual if you act like something so many people are trying to be.

Saying that, I thinks its pathetic for people to try that hard for attention. If so many people suggest that being yourself is the best thing you can do, they would be saying it for a reason.

Emo means emotion, so can I say it cause I know what it means?
I call people emo, yes I label people and Im not going to stop labelling people. Ive done it all my life, society has helped me to do so and I shall continue to do so. I too am labelled. I am an emo hater, I personally cant stand some emo music and the fashion makes me so :mad2:. But if people want to be emo thats fine. Just dont try to change my opinion of them.
