SNK Playmore's King of Fighters series is one of the longest-running fighting game franchises, but the game's graphics have remained relatively the same since it was introduced more than a decade ago. According to the publisher, that's going to change.

During the 2006 Tokyo Game Show, SNK Playmore arcade project art director Nona appeared on stage and revealed that King of Fighters XII will feature a complete visual overhaul. Only a logo for the game was shown, and Nona explained that the game is still in the middle of development.

"We're throwing out the [character] pixels that we have been using for the past 10 years, and we are going with new graphics," Nona said. "We are hoping to make the ultimate 2D game."

So what will we have here? A King of Fighters game that's done all like Guilty Gear? Man, I hope they still keep the gameplay mechanics all nice and tight.

They've been putting one out almost every year since 1994, so yes.

They quit putting years at the end of every game since SNK went out of business in 2001 (I think) so KoF 2000 got delayed till late 2001.

KOF did need a overhaul, even though the games before had nothing wrong with them, I'd say that the 2D models have aged well after all these years. Guilty Gear changed the way we look at 2D fighters, Im sure SNK can do the same. I still wouldnt care if they changed nothing, I mean, KOF is one is one of the greatest series ever, whatever they brought out next, It'd still be awesome.

Ah, forgot Neoblood. I hated NB1 so much so maybe that's why I forgot to count it.

Thats a total of 20 KoF games, 21 if you count the KoF 94 remake that was gonna be on the US Xbox but got cancelled.

I wanna see Chris be possesed by Orochi again, Orochi is probably the 2nd best fighting game villain ever.
