View Full Version : Sacrilege! What Movies Do You Hate, In Spite of Their High Status?

What movies do you hate, even though they're held in very high regard?

I think both Caddy Shack and Animal House are terrible movies, blasphemy though it may seem. They just struck me as really base comedy and I never got into them.

Anyone else?

I didn't really enjoy the Kill Bill movies...even liking anime. Maybe it was all the violence.

And I don't like the comedy movies with all the disgusting humor...American Pie, Scarie Movie, ect. I feel like an idiot watching them.

QFT.

I don't like Spirited Away much, and I outright, violently HATE Moulin Rouge. It is the only time I have ever actually disliked Nicole Kidman, because it is the most despairing failure of a movie I have ever seen and it taints anything involved.

Don't like Umberto D much, but then I'm not a fan of Italian Neo-realism.

I agree about Animal House. I never got why it achieved such status. It's OK for a few laughs, but it's not outright hilarious or in any way sophisticated.

I'm pretty critical of most movies. There's just so much crap out there that panders to the chimpanzee in us all (if you're down with evolution).

This thread reminds me of a Family Guy that was on the other day where the family is about to drown in the "panic room" and Peter brings up his dislike of The Godfather. Everyone gives him an attitude like "That just makes no sense. You can't not like The Godfather..."

I think some movies, achieving an initial popularity, are given sort of a free pass.

Good lord, truth. I walked out of Scary Movie.

Brokeback Mountain was garbage. The characters were completely unrelatable. There was one thing about them that made them that way.

They were idiots.

American Pie x 3. <img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif">e stuff.

Hmm. The Harry Potter movies (the most recent one wasn't so bad though). Maybe next time they should use people who can act!? i.e. ACTORS!? Novel idea!

High School Musical. What the hell is up with this? The songs make me cringe. :(

Admit it, the actors were actually acting in Harry potter 3 and 4, you can't bundle those two together with the other <img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif">.

Rashomon - That movie was terribly boring to me, and I don't see how it recieves such high praise.

Gladiator - Overrated Hollywood garbage to me.

Brazil - I wanted to love this movie, but I just didn't get any kind of emotional connection with the characters at all. Maybe a second viewing is necessary.

To Kill A Mockingbird - Simply can't hold a candle to the book.

I think Titanic is the only movie that comes to mind that I didn't enjoy despite huge popularity. That said, the only genre of movies that I buy are the historical epics and swordfighting movies, like Gladiator, Patriot, Last Samurai, Troy, etc. Titanic never had a fair chance. By the time I saw it, I was already irritated with its title song, which had been overplayed ad nauseum. I watched the movie expecting to be unimpressed, because I had already been annoyed by the constant publicity over it, and I left feeling just as I intended to feel about it when it was over.

i also hated that crappy neopolian dinomite thing good god that was bad....the godfather films or scarface arent anything to write home about either, not forgetting to mention the good, the bad and the ugly (im not a clint eastwood OR western fan so that sealed its fate).

but i have to admit for one of the most successful films of all time titanic aint half tripe, but the worst offender for me was FF10 and FF10-2 i know they arent stictly films they are still huge disapointments considering the amount of praise they garnered....

Wow. You name two incredibly overrated movies, and one movie which deserves it's status entirely.

Don't like Citizen Kane...? I mean, you're free to your own opinion, it's just hard to come to terms with the fact that such a perspective is physically possible.

Back to Saw: WTF? It's terrible and the only good thing in it is Henry Gale. It's a joke of a movie. Se7en is the only one of that genre I've ever thought anything of, though... mostly they just come across as pointless sadism for incredibly tenuous reasons.

I'm a fan of old movies, but for some reason, i couldn't get into this film at all. I thought it was incredably dull, and took an effort to watch it. If i was to give it anything, it was original for it's time, & and had a good idea behind the storyline, but compared to the status it has, i find that it was over-rated.

Your generalizing with horror films, you should be lashed consistantly.

You do realize that all horror films don't involve people dying Or idiots dying because it's own fault , right? Some are more subtle.

Saw - I haven't seen Saw 2 yet, but I found the first one to really be a cool concept that didn't really work as well as it should. I spent most of the movie a little bored as these guys try to figure out what was going on. It was a good movie overall, but not worthy of the praise it often gets.

And since another thread reminded me; Batman and Batman Returns - I enjoyed these movies and they're good for their time, and I won't sit here and claim to be an expert on Batman, but I don't feel that the movies had a good grasp on Bruce Wayne/Batman, and a lot of the villians to be honest. Tim Burton didn't seem to get the character if you ask me, so that hurts the movie in my eyes, especially when the guys who did Batman Begins nailed these classic characters so well.

mhmm mhmm, I have seen it when I was going out with my Ex (grudgingly agreeing... but oh well).

I also did not like either Saw though, despite all my friends swearing they are the best thing EVAR!!!1!!!. Both movies came off like an hour and a half rock music video to me, and the direction of it kind of...bothers me.

I don't think they're bad, I just don't think they're, like, awesome either.

Only one I'm going to have to agree with are all the scary movies you mentioned and Brokeback Mountain. I expected Brokeback Mountain to be spectacular, but I found it to be very slow paced and boring and there wasn't nothing happy about it. It was one down fall after the other, they fight because they don't know when they'll see eachother next, they both marry and can't be together, then one of them dies.

Titanic - For obvious reasons.

Citizen Kane - Don't hate it and actually think the cinematography is amazing, especially for its time. But, every character was either horrendously dull or ridiculously unbelievable. Orson Welles' acting seemed to keep getting worse, the older Kane got. And don't get me started on "Rosebud" as a plot device. It's a pretty decent film, but way overrated.

Star Wars - Out of all 6, the only one I liked was Empire. The other two of the first trilogy were bogged down with bad acting and writing, with overdone story-lines. The second trilogy was just a special effects extravaganza, with long-winded speeches, intended to make the viewer think that the plot is not only good, but deep, when it really isn't either.

Grease - Far too campy, even for a musical.

Brokeback Mountain - I wanted to like it, honestly, and I thought it was well-acted. But, I disliked both characters and felt their was no real motivation or feelings between them, despite both actors vehemently trying to make it seem like there was.
