View Full Version : Accents You Have Trouble Understanding.

Although I'm normally quite good at communicating with others, I sometimes have trouble understanding certain accents and dialects over here in good old Blighty (Great Britain). Scottish and Indian accents are virtually impossible for me to understand, although I do try very hard. I also have trouble with the 'Liverpudlian' and 'Geordie' dialects/accents. Don't get me wrong, I don't disapprove of or dislike the aforementioned dialects/accents, I simply cannot understand them very well at all.

How about you?

Scottish can be somewhat difficult to understand at times. There's also a southern accent (called "Sønderjydsk" in the native tongue) in Denmark that can be extremely hard to understand. Those are the only ones I can think of right now.

Nice idea for a thread, by the way :)

I have trouble understading the Indian accent too. There are Indians in my street and I feel really bad when I can't make out what they're saying. :(

I have trouble understanding Northern Californians. The hippie dialect uses a lot neo-liberal slang. It's quite repulsive.

Very strong Indian accents can pose me a bit of a problem, but I don't normally have any trouble understanding people with accents.

Scottish is actually much easier to understand, for me, than general northern English accents are. xD Maybe because it's similar to Northern Irish, which I'm fluent in? xD

I can't understand thick Indian or Asian accents very well. It makes work an ordeal sometimes.

A thick cornish accent is pretty much the hardest thing to understand i've ever heard.

I've never really had any trouble with accents. Fast talking Pennsylvanians can be tough to understand, and so can people from southern Louisiana who speak with Creole infusions. Carribean people, too. That's it.

I can understand (and impersonate) any accent.

Oh and if you guys think Scottish is bad, Geordie's are worse. In a nice way

Well, assuming they're not using heavy local slang, I can understand any accent except one. East coast Newfoundland. My father is from there and I can't understand a word he says.

Almost any non-American accent sounds like another language to me. When watching a movie like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels or Trainspotting the first five minutes sound like absolute gibberish to me until I get used to the accent.

I'm a slightly better with Austrialian accents, but not by much.

In the States I occasionally struggle with Deep Southern accents of non-urbanites.

I can't understand strong Indian accents. And some very strong British/Scottish, whatever.

Also, extremely strong Caribbean Patois is also totally impossible to comprehend.

Deep Southern accents, definitely. They're such a constrast to the Noo Yoikah Queens accent that I have. xD

Ouch!

Give me a few moments and I can catch on to just about any variation of the English language.

Just an afterthought--Australians have the sexiest accent. Ever.

I come from Newcastle, so I don't struggle with the Geordie accent at all, and I understand pretty all others. A lot of people struggle with the Geordie accent, though -- So I only speak it at home to my parents and brother as we don't live in Newcastle anymore. When I'm with my friends or people from this area my accent adapts to speak like them, too. I don't make it happen... it just does. :jess:

I think Scottish a bit hard to catch sometimes, but I still think the accent is lovely. Given enough time listening to any accent, I can usually understand the gist of what someone is saying even if their accent is super thick.

I have no problem whatsoever understanding people from the north of england, and scotland. But I cannot understand people from Dublin even though I'm from the same island and I'm in the city at least 4 times a year. I remember having a conversation with a taxi driver, and I had to get my mate to talk to him instead while I just sat in the back staring out the window; i couldnt understand him.

I have trouble with the New Zealand accent. I have a close friend who comes from NZ and everytime she says 'six' it's takes me a moment to realise she didn't say 'sex'. Stuff like that.

Other than that, accent are fairly easy for me to understand. I know, though, some of my friends have had trouble understanding my accent at times (Resha).
