Ok, so when I played ff4 on the GBA, I noticed that the characters' pictures were different from the SNES version. The pictures of the characters look UGLY!!! I prefer the SNES version because of that one little difference.
Anyone agree with me, or know what I'm talking about?

Oh, I was going to say something else if you thought the massive graphics upgrade was ugly.

Anyway, no, I had no problem with the 'ugly' new menu portraits. I didn't find them ugly at all, because I was too busy drooling over my hot new portable Final Fantasy IV with updated graphics and added features to complain about something so trivial.

Me too.

I was also too busy getting over how awesome it was being able to switch around your characters.

what does U.G.L.Y stand for?

i dislike rosas and i think a few of them look dodgy but its not too bad. i prefer the originals.

I'll admit I never played the original version, but the portraits seem fine to me. Could be a bit better, but overall the game is more polished graphically than I expected.

I hate the font they have.

i like the font, but i thought the dawn of souls font was better.

what bugs me a lot (even though it seems like a really minor detail) is how the text on FF4A doesn't scroll across the screen, it just appears all at once. i dunno why but i don't like this.

Yeah, I wasn't paying attention to the portraits becuase I was too busy trying to decipher the font.

I prefer the new portraits over the old ones

I wasn't bothered by the new portraits. The other graphics in the GBA version looked pretty good anyway.

The graphics were good, and I like them, but the portraits are just horrible. Yes, I know I'm fussy, but that's just me.

Is there a link to pics of the new portraits?

Kishi, I wish you would've shown me these before I said those hateful things about child rydia.

Rosa appears to be a victim of circumstance. most of the others look great, apart from the aforementioned, kain's, edward's, and cid's look great.

paladin cecil and adult rydia also seem to have suffered. Someone needs to learn how to pixel womanly portraits.

The main problem is that, while the original portraits only depicted each character's head, Square got overzealous with the GBA version and tried to show their bodies as well, even though they actually had less pixel space to shoehorn them into. So many of the facial details that were instrinsic to the appeal of the original portraits--Gilbert's conflicted expression, Rosa's caring gaze, Porom's endearing smile, Palom's smarmy half-grin, Cid's gaping piehole, and so on--were obscured beyond recognition.

They have even better quality while still looking faithful to the originals. Maybe I'm not a pixel expert, but I don't see how they look obscured.

It has nothing to do with being a "pixel expert." Just look at Porom and Palom. If you can't see the degradation there, you're just deluding yourself.

Then I guess I'll just continue deluding myself.

I think palom and porom look more the sweet yet mischeivous children they are without being in the throes of agony than they did, really.

I see what you all mean, i've only played the PS1 version which I think has the SNES versions that you posted, but they look much clearer on my TV than on this screen. The GBA ones look ugly, why didn't they just re-use the SNES ones?

Am I the only one who finds Rydia's eyebrows upsetting?

No, especially in adult Rydia.

Rydia looks plain weird in those pictures. So does Rosa, as everyone seems to notice. But Kain, Edge, Tellah, and Cid look pretty good. The others, well, they look like they lost something, but not really sure what.

yeah i had never had a problem with the GBA pictures really, but looking at that post it is clear that the SNES ones were better in pretty much every instance.

also lol @ your hidden image title opinions

i think adult rydia looks like a transexual guy! and paladin cycil looks like a drug addict drag queen! what is wrong with this world!? why cant they just leave the past well alone!?

i think adult rydia looks like a transexual guy!

So I wasn't the only one who noticed that? Even now that I'm looking at the GBA pics, I don't think they were that bad, although the new portraits of Rosa and adult Rydia looked quite bad, IMHO.

I think the kids look cuter in the newer portraits.

Well, i like tellah,Cid, and DCecil, they were pretty good to the original. Edges is alright too, but i like the expression better in the SNES version.

Everyone else, now when i compare, seem to have all thier facial features obscured, but still faintly recognizable.
