I havent got a list. My favorite guitarists are ones that dont try and show off every two seconds with a fancy guitar lick or whatever, it just doesnt do it for me.

Basically, myself, because i'm crap and I need an excuse to say I'm good.

The fella from children of bodom is very good at what he does.

Michael Angelo Batio is probably the greatest.

Alexei isn't as good as some, but what he composes is fantastic.

In my sincere opinion, Phil Keaggy is the best musician to ever pick up a guitar.

He's not too well known amongst non-guitarists, and understandably so. Heck, he's not even that well known amongst guitarists. He's a Christian recording artist. And, interestingly enough, he's missing a finger. Yet he still manages to play stuff that I couldn't dream of playing. And I've been working at it for a while now!

But I also love Kirk Hammet (because I love Metallica, shut up), Angus Young, Dimebag Darrell, and my older brother Joe. That guy is nuts. It's like unreal how good he is. You don't expect to meet people who can play like him in real life.

bet i could out play hammet blindfolded with two of my fingers tied together.....and batio might be fast but the he plays stuff thats easy to play fast...like 3 string patterns that dont require wide stretches such as teh aeolian mode which seems to be a favourite of his....and hammett...i wont even bother talkin bout....he is the weakest player ever....but if anyone can play anything by becker as well as becker himself i would be majorly impressed...as he has such good technique...and anyway if you said you could play it...i probably wouldnt believe you as your technique would be real sloppy....so that doesnt count....but i did forget to mention

I would have put Santana instead of Satriani but at the time i was listening to 'Down, Down, Down' by Satriani. Santana is good but i haven't heard anything good from since his 'Black Magic Woman' days (1970's)

Sephirophishere, you've contradicted yourself and your digging yourself a hole. Want a shovel?

You say Michaelangelo's a guitarist, yet Becker has perfect technique? Technique is not what makes a great guitarist. All these guitarists have great technique, especially Michaelengelo (he's the fastest- i think his technique is pretty down) and Kirk Hammet.

What makes a GREAT guitarist isn't technique. Sure, it helps a lot, but it has to sound good. Think of it like this: while a lot of people can draw and paint amazingly truthful representations of nature, not every single one of them is remembered. To be remembered and acclaimed as a great artist, you have to have the soul of the artist (a la Andy Warhol). The same is true with guitar.

Basing your arguement on technique alone will get you nowhere. Sure, I freakin hate the way Slash plays guitar, but I do admit his technical skills are pretty damn good. Same goes for Michaelangelo.

Shut up. If you're better than Kirk Hammet, prove it. If you're not, say it now and gain some respect.

bull!!!!!!!!....hammett has the worst technique i have ever heard....and becker has the right balance of creativity and technique....adn becker actually plays stuff that is hard unlike batio...and....if you just listen to the david lee roth album a lil aint enough you will be very impressed.....

So, if you know everything about guitarists (just assuming you do since you speak as if you were the bible), where's your album? When are you going on tour? Where's your critics website? Why doesn't anyone seem to accept your "truth" without question?

Yes, they were/are are all good. Some have different styles than each other and some play closer to the book in terms of technique than others. Despite that this is an FF forum, some of us do know what the hell when we are talking about guitarists. I'd like to see your credentials that entitle you to your "truths", and then maybe we may be a little more open to accept your ideas. If you completely own Batio in a concert on stage, then we may be more willing to think he "sucks".

I never said Becker wasn't great. I haven't heard enough fom him to talk about him properly. I highly doubt Hammet would have the worst technique you have ever heard. Come on be reasonable. I'm not a fan of heavy metal style guitaring but I have watched Hammet play on various dvds etc. and he is definatley a technical virtuoso.

He practices up to three hours a day (according to my old guitar teacher) from the Berkley books. Anyone who manages to work their way through all those books and still uses them is bound to have pretty freakin good technique. They are great books. Check them out if you haven't already.

virtuosoes should practice 9 hours....and hammett is pathetically weak....he is a nice guy though....but he is a crappy player...

oh an dhte reason i havent released an album is because i havent got a very unique style....it jus sounds like some other guy that already has an album...so im workin hard on improvisin and songwritin and stuff...

Vituosos should practice nine hours? Nah, not if they don't need to. And Becker is good, but I wouldn't put him anywhere near the best guitarists I've ever heard. He may be technical, and have the technique, but that doesn't mean a thing compared to a good tune. Then again, I don't like Batio, Satch or Vai much either, virtuosos tend to bore me.

My favourite guitarists would have to include Jerry Cantrell (AiC), Alexi (Bodom), Deron Miller (CKY), Chuck (Death), Pepper Keenan (Corrosion, Down), Ginger (The Wildhearts), Tom Morello (Rage), Dan and Pin (Sikth), Claudio and Travis (Coheed), and Friedman (Megadeth). All musicians who can put together some damn fine riffs, and top them up with the odd amazing solo. A good riff and a well thought out solo means more to me and speed and technique any day, and I've been playing for around four years now.

Didn't think so. ;)After reading your post ... i have come to the conclusion that you sound like an automation, and very uncool. (AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU)
You are regurgitating what you have heard, but there isn't anything solid in your arguements to add validity. Its just puffing out your chest and squaking as loud as you can to grab everyone attention and focus it on you.

Just because i learned to play guitar by playing someones music (whom you think has no technique) doesn't mean i am lookin' for an ass kickin' ! But i highly doubt that you'd be the one to do it ... pft ...

If you can play, good for you. Remember thinking and doin are 2 different things. Also air guitar isn't really playing guitar. I really don't care what you can or (most likely can't) do. Those who can't, teach and criticize ... Good for you to have a mate who believes what you do. Wow, 2 people who believe the same thing ... it must be true !

And if you have no style, technique is wasted...

I have never had anybody complain that because i learned to play guitar by playing metallica that i can't play, have no technique, style or am just a plain suck ass guitarist ...

But hey, you think what makes you feel good. After all its only your OPINION ... nothin' that will throw the world off its rotation.

You have made some large judgements there, with little backing.

Sure, I have heard this stuff before, and sure, it is regurgitated, but I'm not claiming to have come up with these ideas myself. It is considered by many to be fact (Note: "by many" is not asserting that this is fact. Try to realise that. :)). I'm not saying you have to agree with it or like him, but in my opinion, he has had a huge influence on heavy metal and thrash music. For the record, I don't like Hammett, or Metallica.

+1 on Akerfeldt! I watched Live at Shepard's Bush yesterday and he gives such feel on Windowpane and To Rid the Disease. Can't believe I forgot him...

However, Herman Li is a very sloppy guitarist, IMO.

I can't believe no one has even mentioned Matthew Bellamy yet!!

So eh..
1. Matthew Bellamy (Muse) hee hee
2. Billy Corgan (Samshing Pumpkins)

And for bass guitarists:
1. Chris Wolstenholme

Why are bass guitarists always overlooked??
Bass is just as good as guitar!*nods furiously*

Matthew Bellamy is awesome. But some of his solos kind of get repetetive. Like New Born & Hysteria. But stockholm syndrome wasn't that bad.

I really never expected anyone to mention Deron Miller, or Claudio Sanchez, but they're both fantastic.

Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Warren Haynes, BB King, Chuck Berry, and Neil Young. All are amazing with both electric and acoustic guitars, and Duane Allman and Warren Haynes could/can both play a mean slide guitar.
