I would advise you to get Megadeth - Capitol Punishment, its one of the greatest albums I have ever bought and well worth £5.99. I love it, its pretty heavy though, but it has a lot of thier old stuff on, like Kill The King, Symphony Of Destruction, Almost Honest and Derad & The Fugitive Mind

Ok, listen to me because I have the perfect website for you. www.pandora.com. It identifies the traits of individual songs you like and plays music that is somewhat similar (the music genome project). It's easily the best way that has ever existed in the history of the universe to expose yourself to new music.

You know, one of the songs it played for me was called "In Touch" by "Karl Barx". I'd never heard of the band before, and I couldn't find the song for download. I posted about it in my LJ, and someone associated with the band sent it to me in an email. :P

Hundred Reasons are one of my favourite bands, i've seen them live 4 times, they kick ass live.

I will recommend these people:

Hip Hop:
Common
Nas
Roots Manuva

Punk:

Alkaline Trio (don't listen to a lot of punk, I must admit.)

Others (cba to catagorize for each lot anymore):

Ayreon: Just...really fucking awesome band. Rock/Metal Opera is the best way to describe it. It's just awesome. Some of it sounds like it's from a video game, it's epic stuff. All the albums tell a story. Best to listen to them all in one go

Nick Drake: Really, REALLY good singer/songwriter from the 70's. Acoustic stuff, autumnal songs, really. Sort of folky/even a little bit psychadelic. Listening to the three albums he released in order just shows his descent into depression and he eventually ended up killing himself, which is a shame because he was fantastic.

Explosions in the Sky: Awesome post-rock band, for the most part all instrumental music, it's awesome chilled out rock.

Polysics: ghetto japanese punk/electronic band. They're totally mental and awesome.

The Mad Capsule Markets: because they are my favourite band and they rule. :D

In no way do Pandora and last.fm even come close to solving the "Find me new music I like" question. The databases are incompletely indexed and the algorithms aren't robust enough. As a wise man from another forum once said, "Everyone gets a giant boner over this site the first time they are on it - then they realize its like having a really annoying roommate who owns the stereo."

A mapping site like http://www.liveplasma.com/ would serve you better the more eclectic your taste in music becomes. It's not that much better, but it's more thorough in terms of mapping and indexing, and is a lot more complete than Pandora since it isn't trying to be a radio station.

Speak for yourself, I found absolutely loads of new bands I now love thanks to LastFm along with a whole bunch of people who can recommend you stuff, and communities. It's not all about a database, though I would say that about Pandora maybe. LastFM is a community which can really expand your music tastes.

Perhaps I can convert you into a prog rock fan Sapphire Star. This site (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=1449)has free streaming samples of some of my favourite bands, and I've compiled a list of samples of some bands. For each link scroll down to the grey box and play them. Be warned that it's all very expirimental.

Pink Floyd (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=364) Best one: Time. (This selection is really not a very fair view of the band. If you want a good sampler ranging through the whole discorgaphy of the band, get this best of.) (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=1449)

Emerson Lake and Palmer (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=94) Best one: Hoedown

Frank Zappa (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1023) Best one: Peaches en Regelia

King Crimson (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=191) Best two: 21st Century Schizoid Man, Cirkus

So maybe not the songs I would have chosen for the best samples of the artists, but if you like what you hear let me know. And, if you're really interested, I have some more uploaded on my PC right now, and I could send you some more (PM me your email and I can attach them). Or you can look for some of the albums in your music store. The site also has reviews for literally every prog rock album in existence, and they're all fairly informative. Exact information is available if you want to try out an album.

Artist: The Dresden Dolls
Album: Yes Virginia or The Dresden Dolls
Genre: Punk/Dark Cabaret

An interesting sound developed by two people, singer/pianist Amanda Palmer and drummer occassional guitarist and vocalist Brian Viglione. Their sound is ridden with driving rythms and stabs and spunky, explicit and clever lyrics. There is the humorous yet rebelious nature of Punk intertwined with piano and drums.

Truly worth listening to.

Notable songs are Coin Operated Boy and Sing.

Artist: Flogging Molly
Album: Swagger or Drunken Lullabies
Genre: Irish American Celtic Punk, but we can just call it fucking pirate music

It's like listening to a drunken brawl at an Irish bar on a pirate ship, what more can I say? There is an accordian, fiddle, drums, guitars, spoons, etc... It has the punk spirit with clever lyrics and a seemingly chaotic yet masterfully woven beat. It makes you want to get a pirate ship and dance.

Seriously, listen to them.

Notable songs are Salty Dog and Drunken Lullabies

Artist:Gogol Bordello
Album: Gypsy Punks
Genre: Gypsy Punk mixed with cabaret, punk, and dub

Take traditional gypsy music from Eastern Europe, and then put in a place where there can be a frenetic, fantastic stage show. The songs are catchy, and you can definately feel the playful, dancable nature of the songs. The members of the band are an ecclectic bunch, and it simply adds to the show and sound.

One listen to Start Wearing Purple will have you realize the nature of these guys.

Artist: Mindless Self Indulgence (MSI)
Album: Any of them really, though I like anything after Tight more personally
Genre: Techno-punk

Seriously, MSI is basically like crack for your ears.

The words fly out there, and they range from soft to angry, frenetic, calm and everything else. The synths and drums and everything else stabs, stops, weaves, etc like someone on crack with organization. It shouldn't work, but it does.

It's loud, it's offensive, it's fun, and it's bound to have you feely slightly crazy.

I love it.

Artist: Modest Mouse
Album: Good News for People Who Love Bad News
Genre: Indie Rock

You've probably heard of Modest Mouse. If you haven't then allow me to explain:

Their songs are commonly fueled by satire, nonchalant appeal, the music is usually pretty linear, though it has its moments of craziness. It has a feeling of either driving about without any real direction or simply sitting back and musing over the world. Some songs are danceable or capable of moving people about, but the album seems to be what one would describe as a relaxed mood, but not in the sense of volume. Rather, in the sense of attitude.

It's definately one I enjoy.

Notable songs include Float On or The Ocean Breathes Salty.

Well, that's what iTunes churned out with its random feautre for five artists - I may post more later.

No classical?

Flogging Molly never gets old for me. The Dropkick Murphies are really great too, if you like that kind of stuff.

But if you want to listen to punk rock, please listen to the Dead Kennedies. "Chemical Warfare" "Holiday in Cambodia" and "Kill the Poor" are me favorites. You should also listen to the Misfits. They're new stuff is still good, despite the fact that they totally sold out. The old stuff though, is the best.

Outside of punk you need to be listening to Bob Dylan. On a regular basis. If you haven't hear Mr. Tambourine Men you've missed out on one of the best song ever written.

Also check out two bands called Neutral Milk Hotel and Badly Drawn Boy.

And definetly listen to Beethoven and Chopin.

Artist: Skinny Puppy
Recomended Album(s): Too Dark Park, The Process, The Greater Wrong of the Right, Last Rights
Genre: Industrial

Inspired by the music of Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, and others, Skinny Puppy experimented with electronic recording techniques and methods, composing multi-layered music generally with synthesizers, found sounds, drum machines, manual percussion, tape-splices, traditional instruments, distortion, and samplers. Whereas many contemporary remixes and re-edits of songs were created in order to make a song more suitable for dancing or different radio formats, Skinny Puppy approached remixing and re-editing as an artistic process of reinterpreting compositions, often using remixes to push their sound into styles of ambient, dub and techno.

Skinny Puppy has been widely noted for their bizarre and confrontational live performances, for which every concert was designed to challenge the notions and beliefs of all who attended. Their music has had some acceptance in dance clubs because of its danceable beats, but has had little play on commercial radio. The band had very little commercial success outside of Canada, but their influence on industrial and electronic music in general is immense.

Songs to listen to while "discovering" Skinny Puppy:
I'mmortal
Killing Game
Tin Omen

Artist: :wumpscut:
Albums: Wreath of Barbs, Cannibal Anthem, Embryodead, and Eevil Young Flesh (Boeses Junges Fleisch)
Genre: Industrial/EBM (EBM stands for Electronic Body Music)

:wumpscut: is dark, houses ominous synths merged with driving beats and signature growling vocals. Samples and synths and rythms are all merged together to form a driving, forceful beat accompanied by Ratzinger's distinctive German growl.

The songs evoke imagery of horror, mystery, bizzare situations, and hectic, frenetic emotion and thought. Sex, religion, war, people and society, politics, and psycholigy crawls its way into the songs and albums, and Ratzinger is not afraid to show such things. He uses samples from war, speeches, pornography, and just about everything else to set an interesting texture sometimes.

The sound ranges from loud, fast, threatening, to sometimes deathly calm, quiet, and enigmatic.

I highly suggest listening to :wumpscut: if you are interested in the Inusrial/EBM genre at all.

Notable songs are:
Wreath Of Barbs [Album Mix]
Christfuck
Escape
Is It You
Pass auf
Hunger

Artist: Das Ich
Albums: Die Propheten, Egodram, Anti Christ and re_animat
Genre: Electrogoth/Industrial

German seems to have a method in weaving mystery, dramatics, emotion, imagery of horror and world issues like no other langauge. Das Ich is dark, forboding, and has a mysterious, violent undertone to its sound. The music commonly hovers on a sound of panic with strings that pitch and growl, while Stefan Ackermann and Bruno Kramm sing, growl, and whisper the lyrics. Heavy, constant drums and beats build and help shape the sound.

Overall, it's an interesting, boding, ominous trip. There is the feeling of fear, violence, helplessness, power, confusion, satire, and general mystery in all of their songs.

Very, very interesting, I would at least give them one listen through.

Notable songs:
Schwanenschrei
re_animat
Destillat
Gottes Tod
Engel

Artist: Android Lust
Albums: The Dividing, Devour, Rise, and Take Flight
Genre: Inustrial

Android Lust is the Industrial solo project of Shikhee, combining elements of rock, industrial, gothic and classical styles into a blend of music that she describes as "electronic and dark." Her music has themes of hurt, loneliness, lust, rejection, impatience, anger, and confusion.

With the help of guest musicians on flute, live drum performances, viola, and touches of her own acoustic guitar, Shikhee adds an unconventional layer of organic warmth to Android Lust's trademark palette of icy electronics.

Android Lust is as diverse in presentation as it is in subject matter, running the emotional gamut from loss to discovery, from regret to carnivorous loathing. Android Lust weaves in elements of punk, pop, and rock to create what can only be described as neo-industrial.

Synths and Shikhee's voice are the prominent aspects of Android Lust. Bold, rich synths follow the thin, small, saturated voice of Shikhee. I say small not in the sense of volume, for her words are easily discerned, but rather due to the fact that many of the songs hold definate weight, and the synths create a wall of sound that makes you feel like you about to be drowned in the music.

It's a most pleasing experience, to feel completely surrounded and immersed in the music that she creates. In this way, you feel exactly what she feels.

Notable songs are:
Kingdom of One <---- This song is so damned awesome. The hate and frustration are felt it seems, not heard
Unbeliever
Dragonfly

Really, all of Shikhee's songs are so perfectly molded and shaped that you can't help but feel the music. I really, really, want you to listen to her.

EDIT: Zeldy got me hooked on Lordi :(

Try listening to The Tea Party, mainly Edges of Twilight and Transmission are good. Or you could just get their album Tangents which is a mix of most of their good stuff (although it falls short from some of the great stuff they have). Their new stuff is a bit more pop/rock but I think it still has a very nice sound (i.e. Seven Circles).

They are alternative rock, but have a very strong influence in middle eastern instruments and sounds.

Hmm, what else? How about... Alex Lloyd's 'Black the Sun' album, he's Australian so I don't know how you'd go at finding that album, but it's pretty damn nice. His newer CD which is self titled, has a similar sound but it's more pop than funk/rock.

I dunno, there's heaps of other stuff like Muse, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Days of the New, etc. Actually, I'd highly recommend listening to Jeff Buckley -- his voice is absolutely beautiful as was his talent for song writing. Grace album is defenately good, and you could check out Sketches for my sweetheart, the drunk. That one has some very nice tracks that were released after he died.

Edit: Oh, Elliot Smith is also pretty good if you're into the whole beatles/rock/semi-punk kind of stuff. So is Bob Evans.

And if you're ever into any fun ska, you could try Real Big Fish, those guys are pretty good, they do a nice cover for an 80's song I believe. XD

If you're looking for punk, go with The Clash, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Mindless Self Indulgence, The Dresden Dolls, and Bad Religion.

For the metal/hard rock variety, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns N' Roses, and Pantera are must-haves, but it's likely you're familiar with them. They're very popular, especially the first three. You should also check out Audioslave, The Donnas, Queens Of The Stone Age, Deep Purple, Jet, and Motorhead.

For progressive, I like Coheed And Cambria, as well as (of course) Pink Floyd and Rush. I also love Tool. I also hear King Crimson, Dream Theater, and Yes are all worth the money.

Also if you like Death Cab For Cutie, check out The Postal Service. If you don't know how you feel about either of them, check them both out.

I also like Finch, but try out What It Is To Burn. Their album Say Hello To Sunshine is alright, but I don't know, I don't think I'd reccomend a purchase.

The Beatles. Get everything you can by them. 'Nuff said.

If you're looking for grunge. Aside from the obvious option that is Nirvana. I reccomend Alice In Chains. They also say Pearl Jam is good, but I'm not familiar with them.

I'd also try out Cake (alternative band), I like the cynical and sarcastic nature of their songs. As well Nujabes (hip hop?), if you liked Samurai Champloo's music, you'll like Nujabes. I also like Polysics (New Wave?), great stuff.

If you're looking for techno or synthpop, try out Scooter, Daft Punk, and Freezepop.

My favourite band of all time is Modest Mouse. Definitely go for the Moon And Antartica album. If you like Modest Mouse, try out Wolf Parade and Ugly Cassanova. I also love Animal Collective, try them before you buy though, they're very different from other bands. The Decemberists is definitely worth a try as well. No Doubt and Sublime are also perfect for the ska punk fan. Bright Eyes is great, seriously. Belle And Sebastion is a wonderful band, if you're looking for softer stuff.

Radiohead. <3

I also love The White Stripes, and if you like them. Check out the Fiery Furnaces.

Franz Ferdinand is a good Indie band as well, and if you like them, I highly reccomend The Futureheads. The Yeah Yeah Yeah's is also worth trying out.

Now I'm just going to list stuff:
Beck (alternative)
Gorillaz (alternative)
Keane (piano rock)
The Killers (Indie)
Maroon 5 (Rock)
New Order (alternative)
Oasis (Britpop)
A Perfect Circle (alternative)
Queen (I don't know, they mix a lot of genres xD)
Weezer (geek rock)

A word of warning, if you want to listen to good music, go for pretty much the opposite of anything Zeldy says. :)

OK, you asked for it :P The following are some of my favourite artists that I would recommend you should check out (random order):

Rufus Wainwright - He's been called the best lyricist in the world by the likes of Elton John. He mixes Rock, Folk, Opera, Cabaret, Singer/Songwriter and Pop thus creating a truly alternative and very layered style. Check him out.. he's a genius!

Martha Wainwright - Rufus' sister. She's more mellow and singer/songwriter'ish than her brother. She's got an incredible voice and is a very talented lyricist.

Prince - Everybody should check out the king of Soul/Funk!

Kate Bush - A very alternative singer and lyricist mixing all kinds of genres. She's known for inspiring countless artists.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - A punk/rock band with the very flamboyant front singer Karen O.

Alicia Keys - An extremely talented artist. She's very critically and publically acclaimed and she really deserves it.

Jeff Buckley - A music legend in his own right. He's gained a big cult following since his death in the nineties - his music is naturally great.

Janis Joplin - A huge legend in music. Probably one of the most praised rock singers in the world.

The Roots - Although they are hip/hop artists they are not your regular 50 Cent/Eminem wannabes at all. They mix Soul/Hip-hop/Funk and have a very interesting sound.

...Meh, those were the ones I could think of right now, but there are loads more.

Classical.

Well you need to give more information than just "classical". Name some good composers and orchestras of the like!

I think you should defenately consider looking into a lot of Australian blues/roots kind of bands. Xavier Rudd has a pretty good sound, he plays all his instruments at the one time too! (i.e. guitar/slide guitar, percussion, stomp box, digeridoo).

Mick Hart is pretty good if you like Jeff Buckley, 'Still the Flowers Bloom' is a brilliant song. Absolutely brilliant.

And there's stuff like John Butler Trio (which you might have heard if you live in the UK), Carus, The Beautiful Girls, Alex Lloyd (start off with 'Black the Sun').

Oh yes, defenately get some of Augie March's stuff! Awesome stuff.
