Has anyone out there actually picked up this game and played it? I just bought it, but I haven't taken it out of its shrinkwrap yet and I'm wondering if I should, because, you know, I'm stupid that way. :3

Anyway...heard a lot of things about this title. Anyone have thoughts to share? Does it live up to all the hype?

I haven't bought it yet, but this point I've been prettymuch convinced that it's going to be a worthwhile experience. I love a well-written dark comedy.

I don't get it. Are you actually the bully or is this a Revenge of the Nerds sort of thing?

I'm a few hours into the game, and its pretty interesting. The dialogue is hilarious, and it makes fun of pretty much every aspect of high school you can think of. I wouldn't characterize Jimmy as a bully though--he's more of a regular guy forced into a situation where he has to defend himself (i.e. his mother marries an old rich guy and leaves him in the boarding-school-from-hell so she can go on a year-long honeymoon). After about ten minutes I already really liked his character. Well, still in the prologue so I don't have a very clear impression of the game yet, but it feels worth it already, and the world is huge and cinematic...so far it completely merits a recommendation.

Bully sure seems promising. Haven't played it yet, but all reviews seem to be very positive. They say it's about 40 hours of gameplay, without all the extra's. Sounds good!

I would play it... but i dont play PS2 games much anymore...

I'd almost buy it just to laugh in the face of Jack Thompson! XD

I'm hearing from a lot of people, that its a good game, and that you'll laugh all the way through playing it. XD

Rockstar wasn't responsible for the controversy on this one. It was all the politicians and lawyers who jumped to the conclusion that it was some kind of Columbine simulator. The game itself is actually pretty innocuous.

Yeah, thing is, Rockstar actually make some kickass games. If someone creates controversy about something they make, and it gets more sales, good for them and good for us - we all benefit from a great company making more money.

I don't know, roto...so far I'm absolutely loving this game. Which is shocking, since I don't normally go for this kind of game. Everything about the atmosphere screams "HIGH SCHOOL PARODY", and it just keeps getting better. I just went through the Halloween mission, and I actually got giddy as if I were really out pulling pranks on Halloween night...there are decorations and parties all over the school, and everyone is in costume, and it feels like its really Halloween. Ye gods, and I can't put it down! I have to know what crazy thing happens next!! The whole town just opened up to me, and its amazingly huge.... :3

It's fun to people get their panties in a bunch. ^_^

Anyway, Rockstar was every bit as responsible for the controversy of this game as the media. Do you remember reading any of the early articles and things about it? They kept touting it as a bully simulator. It still amazes me that so many people don't see that things like this and Hot Coffee are intentional on Rockstar's part to try to get free publicity.

(forgive me if I sound a little off. I just got up.)

Mirage

Seriously, the whole hot coffee thing is comparable to an artist painting over a nude painting, and get sued when someone scratch off the last layer of paint.
I don't care how they touted it really. For all we know, they could just have changed their mind during the development of the game. It's not their fault people keep prejudging their games just because of some of their earlier games.

Actually, I think using the mass media like that would be brilliant, it just shows how hopelessly predictable the media is. So if they actually do it on purpose, I think it's a great idea :).

I picked up this game last night, it just arrived here. I just got the slingshot and the skateboard, and I've failed English twice.

So far it's pretty good. It is quite humorous and the voice acting is great. I think I can safely reccommend this game.

Appearantly now JT is pissed off because Bully contains boy-boy kissing... if the player so chooses to allow that... XD

Its just another game out of the many, that give players that choice...

but whats sad here... is JT is suggesting normal kissing is ok for teens to witness, but not gay kissing... XD wow what a jerk...

Judge Ronald Friedman
Dade County Courthouse
Miami, Florida 33130

Re: Bully

Dear Judge Friedman:

Now that you have consigned innumerable children to skull fractures, eye injuries from slingshots, and beatings with baseball bats, without a hearing as to the danger, let me tell you a few things, with all respect for your office and with no respect for the arbitrary way in which you handled this matter. I can handle an adverse ruling by a judge. I’ve had plenty of those in my lifetime, and that’s fine. But the way you conducted yourself today helps explain why a great Dade County Judge, the late Rhea Pincus Grossman, could not abide you. She was not the only one:

1. Well into this case, you told Take-Two to produce “a tape of the game so you could watch it.” Video games don’t come on tapes, Judge, and you don’t watch them. You interactively play them, which is why they are so behavior modifying. You, the player/protagonist, enter into the violence and do it, but you didn’t even want to hear testimony about that. You are not an expert in bullying or virtual reality, and I had an expert in both, and you never heard from them because you did not want to hear from them. Dr. Provenzo could have explained why interactive consumption of this very violence is so dangerous, as opposed to passively consumed violence on television, but he was not allowed to testify because he was prevented from seeing the evidence.

You were very nice to my other expert, Miami Police Chief Ken Harms, and then made it certain that your courtroom would not be graced with his real expertise. I would have preferred less courtesy and more due process, and so would the victims that are on the way.

2. Take-Two’s lawyer, Rebecca Ward, …in your courtroom when she told you that a “Teen” rating is an age restriction at the point of sale. That is an utter fabrication, and you are on notice that it is an utter fabrication. Ms. Ward is very good at fabricating things for a client that routinely engages in criminal conduct, and you bought all this hook, line, and sinker. Take-Two has been adjudicated by the federal government to have engaged in fraud and deception about game content, and you took their unchallenged word of these two video gamers in your chambers that the game was what they said it was.

3. You assured us, in your courtroom two days ago, that you would view the playing of Bully to its conclusion. That is what you promised on the record. You did not keep your promise. The transcript of that bizarre exercise will show that you asked Take-Two reps “How does the game end?” You never saw the ending. What you took was testimony from two employees of Take-Two/Rockstar, who were not under oath, and without affording me any opportunity to question them. This was an ex parte proceeding that I was forced to watch, nearly gagging on the denial of due process that it constituted. In thirty years of practicing law, it is the oddest thing I have ever seen, and the most judicially arbitrary thing I have ever seen.

But it is not the oddest thing Take-Two has done. They had these little contrived, controlled viewings of the game for people in the media, but even the BBC figured out how violent the game was, despite the sham.

What you conducted in your chambers, Judge, was the equivalent of Iran leading UN weapons inspectors around the country taking them to places where the illegal activity was not occurring.

You would not abide argument today, because the Miami Herald was there, that Take-Two had in fact released this game to the mass media, which waived its privilege as to producing it to me. You did not allow a hearing to occur because the media there would have seen how you railroaded this entire matter—at the expense of children’s safety.

4. You said after being shown what Take-Two wanted you to see that “I’ve seen worse.” Judge, that is not the issue. The issue is whether this game, played by ten-year-olds, whom the FTC says can still walk into Wal-Mart and other retail establishments and buy “Mature” games, will harm them and innocent third parties who get in their way. You are not the measure of the harm. It was your job to let me try to prove the harm. But you didn’t want to hear it.

5. How dare you, Judge, promise a hearing today and then prevent that hearing from occurring. How dare you, Judge, petulantly order the production of the game after it is released on Tuesday morning. I didn’t even ask for that. You did that out of spite, and you were smiling when you did that. You really enjoyed that one, didn’t you, Judge?

6. Finally, Judge, when the reports start coming in from across the country as to the harm that Bully is causing, I want you to think of the parents who rely upon judges to grant due process, apply the laws evenly, and keep their word. The Republicans in the Congress of the United States apparently can’t protect pages, and the Miami-Dade judicial system can’t even protect children, let alone its own reputation.

You broke every promise made me. Disagree with me if you like, but don’t refuse to hold a hearing you promised to have. Don’t promise to view an entire game and then cut out after an hour.

I couldn’t care less what you did to me. What I care is that you, through judicial arrogance, have hung countless kids out to dry in school that will now be meaner and more dangerous.

Next time you promise a “hearing,” I’ll bring a parent with me whose kid is in the ground because of a kid who trained to kill him or her on a violent video game. Try mocking that person, I dare you.

Regards, Jack Thompson

Alright, just finished the game and though the game was great, the replayability just isn't there. I mean, there's stuff to collect and other side-quests/jobs to fulfill, but the game is really empty once the main storyline is complete. This is a problem because, unlike GTA, playing through this games main storyline is pretty quick and easy (probably about 15 or so hours). Also, there's just no way to create the super widespread calamity and destruction that has my GTA: San Andreas game at nearly 75 hours.

Thus, I would suggest a rent. The game is well worth it for the great dialogue and personalities of the characters (Rockstar is basically the Tarantino of game companies in that respect), but I can't see someone spending anything above 20 hours on it unless they're a completion freak.

I have Bully and I think that it's almost better than GtA rockstar came up with a genious game, the story and design is like a classic cartoon I've seen. Jack Thompson was really being stupid, there's no content in it at all that should've made the game banned. The game is also known as Dog Eat Dog in the UK. I'm up to the football mission now I won't give any spoilers, but it includes a mascot. They make class actually fun by putting mini games to them that'll benifit you in the long run.

I think this looks like fun :jess: I'll probably buy it for Christmas. I'm not much of a GTA gamer or a sandbox type, but for some reason this game seems up my alley despite that. Not sure why I'm drawn to it.

Plus, I also use bad faith goo an annoying amount of times on a daily basis now, and since this game indirectly caused the phrase by Jack saying it, I give it much gratitude.

I hadn't thought of buying the game. It sounded too edgy for me. I wasn't interested in a game that centers around the concept of bullying. But knowing your tastes in games, a reccomendation from you makes me reconsider. I might try it out eventually.

Well that's up for debate isn't it? You never know what the developers were first thinking in the early stages of the pre-design phaze. They could have entertained the idea of making the main character a bully. Why else originally call the game Bully?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was the original plan, but they changed it when all the complaining started. I'm really not sure where I read that though, and I'm not bothering to find the link. Chances are, with your typical gaming knowlege, that you may be right.

I don't really care either way. It's still certain that the main character is not meant to be a bully in the game itself, and that was what I was meaning to clarifiy in the first place.

I just bought it yesterday at EB (for $7 too, haha), its sooo fun. I've only done 2 of the missions cuz i just spend all my time running around bludgeoning people with fire extinguishers and table legs, giving nerds wedgies and making them pee themselves, etc.

Yeah, i bring new definition to the word "bully" with this game, i'm such a jerk. Guess i'm making up for those four hellish years of private highschool.

Oh, and as a side note, if you knee a nerd in the crotch, sometimes they'll moan "ohhh, right in my jabberwocky" xDDD

But whatever, i'm actually doing missions now instead of beating up every person i see...and i must say, this game is pretty damn fun.
