Replacing the dynamic orchestral soundtrack with some generic synthesized guitar shredding that loops continuously throughout the entire show, regardless of whatever may be occurring onscreen.

Replacing any mention of death with the phrase "sent to another dimension."

Whenever a vehicle or building is destroyed, making sure one of the characters goes out of his way to note that they were unoccupied or that everyone inside got out just fine. ("No, wait, I can see their parachutes!")

Generally inserting a bunch of wacky out-of-character dialogue. ("This three-eyed cowboy is going for ONE...LAST...RIIIIIIIIIIIDE!!!!")

Between the terrible voice acting and the severely dumbed-down scripts, Dragon Ball Z had one of the most hilariously awful English dubs of all time. It's bittersweet that FUNimation became moderately competent when they finally moved on to other shows.

You have to admit that some of that stuff was hilarious, though. Like when Freeza's scond form stabbed the bald dude through the chest with his horns. And he started to bob his head up and down he was like, "YEE HAW RIDE EM BUCKIN' BRONCO!! YEEEE HAAAAW!"

EDIT: I FOUND IT! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FpOFIDZklo

EDIT2: And he says "STAY WITH ME! YEE HAW! RIDE EM' BUCAROO! RIDE EM' COWBOY! That and it's about almost three minutes into the video.

Their treatment of Freeza was pretty great in general. They took an imposing villain who had a fittingly deep voice in the Japanese version and made the perfectly reasonable decision to saddle him with the voice of a middle-aged woman with throat cancer. Then they littered his dialogue with homoerotic lines like "COME ON BIG BOY" and the aforementioned cowboy nonsense.

Oh...where did they go wrong? For the record I do like the complete off the wall like "The next dimension" so much more than their half-assed attempt to be serious when Funimation took over. The Pioneer(i think) dubs where awesome.

If your going to do it wrong then make it your own but don't walk the line. Funimation all over both sides of the fence.

How does turning the dark overlord of the universe into a sassy flamer not qualify as off-the-wall?

When I first caught DBZ, I thought "Next dimension" was just their word for dead, same as when I first caught SM R I realized Haruka and Michiru, whatever their dub names are, were still lesbians, but were now kissing cousins.

Funimation got screwed into that one. Didn't Pioneer already have that set into place?

There was one line that made me laugh in DBZ that was probably only in the English dub. During the fight with Nappa and Vegeta when Gohan suggests that they all take a break, because they could all use a bath. Nappa says something like "What was that?" and Gohan angrily screams "I said you SMELL LIKE TOENAILS!!!"

Idunno, that actually sounds pretty damn Toriyama to me.

I mean, Doc Slump had a 'poop' arc, after all,in which the robot girl became fascinated with it because she couldn't. Eventually, Slump builds her a poop button (no lie), and the first thing she does after the testing is done is head to school for show and tell. Guess what she shows.

That video was lame, as was Dragonball Z. :D

I find every single one of the Sailor Moon dubs painful. When watching the first episode of SM S after watching the other series in Japanese, I turned the english dub off after 20 seconds of horribly painful voice acting.

This is why Dr. Slump is x10000 times better than DB(Z)/GT ever was/will be.

You try transferring a language with a grammatical structure completely different to that of another language successfully without having to "fill in the blanks".

Yeah, there's a reason why, if I can, I buy subbed foreign films.

Exactly. It's not exactly easy to try and keep the same meaning of dialogue while trying to make it match the mouth movements AND censoring it according to the audience it's being marketed for.
