I assume you're referring to Squall's Renzokuken? and come on, man! that's what the indicator is for. You just watch the pretty yellow light move toward the square on the left (right about the time when Squall is about to land a blow) and hit the R1 button. You are hitting the R1 button, right??

You press the trigger right when Squall should hit the monster. Watch him run up, then he'll raise his gunblade, and it's right after that.

I usually ignore it completely. Press R1 otherwise.

Yep, what rubah said.

It took a while before I got the hang of it, so just try pressing X at various times right before he strikes. You'll nail the timing in no time.

Okay, let's clear things up. You press R1 to activate Squall's critical gunblade attack. The best place to press the button is right when you hear the gunblade slash sound byte. Watch it a few times to get a feel for the delay before you hear it, then start pressing it right as you're expecting to hear the sound. Once you do it once or twice you'll be able to do it almost 100% of the time. It's not hard to master once you realize the timing.

For Renzokuken just watch the indicator at the bottom. The lines indicate when Squall is going to strike, so just press the R1 trigger whenever there is a line passing through the strike area. Really easy stuff.

do you mean that little "kwoo" sound right before the strike?

Just know that the strike is the right moment to trigger. Then practise a while to get the feeling for it, and you should master it in no time.

Please note that you're not supposed to "prepare" the trigger or anything, just think of it as using a gun.
Press the R1 button RIGHT when Squall hits the enemy; it will respond immediately.
