This was used on another forum and I found it to be a very interesting thread. Its pretty simple. I'll post a music video of my choice and the next poster watches it, posts what they think of it and then posts one of their own. But dont go "It was good/bad, I like/dislike the band." Give more about what you think of the video, was there a part you really liked or what would you have changed for example.

Okay, heres my video. Of course its Muse ^^ and its my favourite track by them, "Bliss."

Muse - Bliss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_kBcrPkVbs)

Though it's a top song, and the video looks very pretty (love the outer space aspect), it's not one of the best from Muse I think, it's just Matt Bellamy fallling as it were and there seems to be little else to it. I prefer the creepiness of their Feeling Good video for instance.

My choice to see next:

Sigur Ros - Untitled 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0AZIFmkogY)

I personally hated the song, the music video almost gave me a seizure with all the bright flashing lights. I also couldnt make out anything he was saying, too much screaming.

Lmfao, that was pretty fucked up. Song was kinda irritating, that genre of music isn't my favourite. Give me NWA anyday. :) The video was very entertaining though. I like the concept of "The Gangstarr Of Oz".

I know it's not the original video (the original doesn't even show bowie and queen together), but this song is just awesome with Heath Kirchart.

Under Pressure (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVoxPcm81m4)

Ok, this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r44OFO-MNPo) is good too, gotta love David Bowie!!!

Oh and I love all of Muse's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL77M3SSMQM&mode=related&search=) video clips. <3 When he plays the piano and the buildings pop up, it's just so freakin' awesome!

Omecle, you only need to post one. Black Mage FF1, please can you say more then "The video was lame." More details please people.

Im chosing the David Bowie one as Im a massive fan. I remember seeing this video when I was a kid and it terrified me! Classic song, class Bowie, but one of the best videos hes done. His departure from drugs, very interesting.

Ah now this is good, there's a reason this is often mentioned as one of the best videos ever - it hasn't dated much considering it's 20 years or so old, and it's wonderfully imaginative as well as just being....well...fun. And those dodgem cars are really sweet too :D

I disliked the song, and the video. As you can see, not much effort went into the video. All it did was zoom in on someone ( banging their head back and forth most of the time ), then zoom out.

Yes, it was written for the Bond movie of the same name, but didn't get picked only because the band was not famous enough.

Hmm, I'm not too into this song it is okay really though. Her voice is decent, but the music just doesn't hold it up well enough. The video was frankly nothing special either, not cliche but not original.

OMFG! I love this video and this song! Its just amazing. The video has been well filmed and I love how it skips. Shes a very gifted musician and her voice is just beautiful. I love how she says contageoUS, the US is perfect. The woman is so amazing!

And no "I dont like it" please, make an effort.

The song itself is okay. But, if i'm being honest i hate the video. I think it's stupid, and doesn't give the song justice. Maybe i'm missing something here but it's not really for my taste. The ending isn't too bad though, but the whole idea of using puppetry for what appears to be a Phil Collins song doesn't work IMO.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fXZln4VN3o <-- I like they way they make this song about just about an average day, and incorperate it into the video with some funky camera-work. Simple yet effective. I love this song.

Blackalicious are the real deal. Nobody can bring it like GAB. That said, the style of the video really compliments the group's own smooth, but quirky groove.

That's one of my favorite Radiohead songs. While I think the video is very simplistic, I do think it's a great visual accompaniment to the song in that it has layers of theme. We deserve what we get not only because we feel a certain way, but because we almost ask to feel a certain way.

I don't really have a video in mind, so someone else can go in my stead. :)

11-02-2006, 04:06 AM
I'll rate the above video as Fire didn't post anything to respond with. "Just" is a great song, the video is pretty good as well. I don't really care much for the hype surrounding the "What did he say?!" and all the people making a big deal about Radiohead's decision to not release any information about it. Do you really want to know what made all of those people lay down and just give up? I sure as hell don't.

"Street Spirit" is still my favorite Radiohead video though.

Kamelot - "The Haunting (Somewhere in Time)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pORzOURlQlY)

Jack
11-02-2006, 09:02 AM
I wasn't a big fan of "The Haunting". While I really liked the vocals, I felt the video lost the plot (if you will) by losing the great locations of the castles and churches and instead going to this unreal backgrounds. As such, the footage of the band playing the instruments, I thought didn't suit the earlier footage and as such made me lose interest.
The woman has a nice voice though. A superior Amy Lee.
Which is good, 'cause Amy Lee is crap.

Another collaboration:
Kristin Hersh- Your Ghost (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQatcSuDpKg)

This is a hard video to describe IAS. Firstly, i don't like that kinda music, but the video is a powerful one about war. I tried to listen closely to the words (however hard it was through the guy's screaming) and it sounded more like a long poem than anything else, which is good, and you know, it works. I especially liked the two last lines.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT9G8D-wR3Y <-- I like this video because the guy who made it & the singer are pretty much who is in it (differant for a dance song).

Actually, Matt bellamy is pretty good guitarist in the songs where he uses harmonics and the drummer certainly does not suck. Sure it ming not be some of the greatest drumming ever, but looks how he is in control of the drums, his technique, he is a good drummer.

3/10

I do not like the singer's voice at all.
I do not like the monotone drumming.

I've never heard of those guys, and I haven't heard that song. It's good stuff, and sounds quite similar to a good friend of mine's writing style. The video concept could use some depth, but it's apt. Just your typical performance video with some weird trick photography. Quite eyecatching. The way the song closes is really neat. I didn't see this ending coming, but I like it.

I'll give it a 9/10.3.

And consumer? Are you sayin that TFOT and TC are "popular mainstream" and thats why I listen to them? If so, then I laugh at you. Because when TC was still together they were hardly that well known, same goes with TFOT.

Yes, there are things called opinions, but being a blatant asshole like you clearly are doesn't come off well when "expressing your opinion".

Are you smurfing joking? The Mars Volta is 1000 times more original than The Fall of Troy, who sound like another terrible generic band with a bad singer. Go listen to Tetragrammaton by TMV and tell me another band that sounds like them.

They are consumer music. They sound exactly like the crap people would listen to on MTV. Regardless of why you listen to them, it is I who pities you, you who classifies such bands as original and good music.

Anyways, if you'd like to continue this discussion, feel free to PM me. Otherwise, the mods will lecture us.

Because I said I don't like a band I'm an asshole. That's good to know.

Again, OPINION.

You are so ignorant that it's not even funny. You make claims about TFOT when you have not even heard more than 1 song. Go listen to "I Just Got This Symphony Goin'" and "What Sound Does A Mastodon Make?" by them and then tell me it sounds like an "MTV" band. TFOT will never be on MTV nor do they sound like any of bands on there. And I already know what bands you are comparing them too, Fallout Boy, Taking Back Sunday etc. Bands like that right? lol

They are unique because they have different ways of singing their songs. Like I said, listen to other songs and then tell me that they sound like generic MTV music.

Oh and BTW, after reading your first post I went and listened to some songs by TMV on their myspace. And I still stick to my opinion.

Anyway, my video that was skipped.

Guys, arguing about music is stupid. Unless you can pinpoint specific chords and pitches or talk about the utilization of harmony, cossonance, and dissonance and effectively argue how these go against the fundamental aspects of music theory, your opinion really doesn't hold any ground other than "I think they sound good/bad."

And don't play the hipster card. I can name tons of indie bands that make The Mars Volta look like N*SYNC recognition-wise. Who gives a how many and what kind of people a band's fans are? If people like the sound of their music, that's their choice.

As for Avenged Sevenfold, I'm not really into the new age metal, and it seems to follow the same formula that all the other bands of this genre follow. As for the video, it's a pretty good "show off your fans" video. I hate people that get tatoos of bands that they aren't in or have any affiliation with other than liking their sound. I guess I just like tatoos to have more symbolic meaning than just "these guys kick ass!".

I think I'm gonna hit you all with some ska:

I have heard this song somewhere before... I am sure of it!

Anyway, the video was highly amusing. I laughed my ass off when the guy in the french fries suit was hit by the car, and when they for some reason lip-synched to Japanese dialogue in the beginning :D Very funny. The song itself had a nice feel-good vibe to it and it had a catchy chorus, but all in all it was nothing really special. It's a type of song that I would enjoy listening to if it came on the radio, but I wouldn't buy the album... if you know what I mean.

Well, here is some M.I.A. with "Galang" for all of you. Enjoy.

Sorry Breiniac, I didn't like that one. Not a fan of hiphop, or Middle Eastern influences...

Frank Zappa - Montana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp7S7SI0flQ) One of his more commercial songs, but still great, even live.

The song is okay, but the video, itself, could be better, though.

4.5/10

Testament - Over The Wall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z_4v08JSxA)
(and the next person who posts, PLEASE rate this; last time I put this link up, the next person just proceeded to put THREE videos in one post without rating the one before his, which is not supposed to be done; thus, the video never got rated)

Well obviously my movie could be better: it's live! It's one of my favourite commercial Zappa offerings nevertheless...

Anyway, I'm not a big fan of metal, but this is a little older, and has less of a heavy sound, so it's alright. The guitar work was OK too, and the re-emerging chorus worked well. I must say though that long hair and shaking heads don't blend well for the eyes, and a bunch of closing prison doors get boring. 5/10

Pink Floyd - Live 8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTNB2CJ7NHc)

You don't have to watch all of that unless you're a Floyd fanatic like me.

After all these years, still one of the best prog rock groups. Though their voices are definitely aging. Though it's not necessarily bad. Just like Dylan, they're just different.

As for mine, I think I just found another video to add to my all-time favorites:

That was a rather disturbing movie, and I'm not a fan of Asian Rock either. Sorry, but that's going to get a 1/10. (Don't mind me, I'm a harsh reviewer.)
