Okay, I have no idea if this has happened in anyone else's town, but it seems to be a growing trend here... businesses have people standing on the sidewalks off of major roads with big freaking signs trying to attract business.

Some of 'em are just like "Eh, look at me, I'm holdin' up a sign" and aren't very pro-active about it. Others, however, take to the job pretty seriously: I know one guy who dances his butt off for a furniture store, even when it was 115 outside this summer. That takes guts. Another guy, whom I saw earlier while I was working, held up a sign for Sprint and was singing at the top of his lungs. There's a girl that does colorguard-type stuff for Popeye's Chicken, and I saw a guy on a Segway dressed up like Caesar to promote whatever 5 dollar thingy Little Caesar's was doing.

I'll try and get some video of one of 'em or another, but I'm curious... does this crazy kind of thing happen in your town, too? Pictures and video encouraged!

Yeah, you get those a lot in London, but they always look really bored and miserable. I want to see some dancing!

I've seen some before. Being held by teenagers mainly, an they usually have some freinds with them, an they stand around talking to them. I don't think I've ever looked at any of the signs. I usually just walk past thinking that their freinds are filthy, for sitting on the pavement.

Yeah, they're in Auckland as well. Mostly they're advertising pizza, but I've seen a few advertising flowers as well.
I always feel sorry for them, because they aren't old enough to get a real job, so they get exploited to do the worst job for the least pay.

I've seen a guy dressed up in a bear costume in 90+ degree weather dancing around just to sell a couple of cell phones.

Sorry no pics.

I've seen an enormous Quizno's sub walking around when the one near my house opened up. And I saw my friend from Little Caesar's screaming at cars and holding the gigantic sign one day trying to get some business.

Yeah I've seen the guy in the Little Caesar's suit outside in the blazing hot summer. I wanted to give him a tip but he said he wasn't allowed to take any, so I slipped it in his toga.

I wonder how much business those people actually generate.

Those have been popular around here for years. Usually they're advertising new housing, since the population of Corona is exploding.

I saw a guy in a giant coffee cup. He had fluffy foam too. I felt bad for him though it was like 30 degrees F out side.

Yes, I see them pretty often. I don't pay attention to them much, aside from laugh at how ridiculous some of them look. :D

Barkers aren't so common in Sydney. The few I do see aren't very into their job. But I gotta admit... some of those damn signs work.

Wembley's Pool House ftw.

Then please please explain London where you get ones for Subway, Mac Donalds, The Doc Martin shop in Camden. Also Chelmsford where people actually walk around in Sandwich boards for the day in the town centre.

I guess their pay must be pretty bad you know. Its not something you want a full time permanent career as!

On-road signs. Y'know? I was referring to people standing on the side of roads dancing around!

Never seen anything like that. The closest thing is people dressed up on a street corner handing our flyers. No big signs or anything.

I will just say that England sucks and California is insane!

I should know; my firm prints the damn things.

Yes, they're very popular, and I hate making them. =/

I've seen people holding up signs for a few of the shops in my local town centre. They don't do anything energetic and I've never seen a mascot in costume.

Indeed, usually advertising a Golf store.

EDIT - I see Cz thinks the same.
