I hope this isn't too touchy of a subject, but uh, well, I just saw Sapphire Star banned.

In the recent times I've been here, I haven't noticed anything banworthy from Sapph, but whatever. I don't really care about Sapph in particular.
I have taken an interest in all the banned users around, because bannings seem to be very prevalent recently. I mean, I'm seeing pinmk in tons of threads. And I can't tell from their recent posts, why they would have been banned for saying anything.

So... What's the conspiracy? Are they requesting bans? Am I not digging deep enough; do bans take a week or so to enact?

Anybody else notice this and have concerns about spontaneous and unprecedented (or at least unexpected) banning?

Ah, so it's simply the result of the age old primal joy that comes from the rejection, humiliation and eventual destruction of others.

We never ban people without fair warning unless they post pornography or register with the sole intent to spam people's Private Messages with advertisements. In every other case, we always provide members with highly visible notice of their impending punishment, so it's all on them if they choose to persist in their bad behavior and get banned.

The specific member in question had a long history of awfully abrasive and argumentative posts--what the girls call flaming.

For a lot of the bans you will never know why the person has been banned just by trying to read through their recent posts because if the posts are bad enough to get banned over, they are usually removed from public view. That is why it might seem that they were banned for no apparent reason.

Also, a lot of people will make really terrible posts and do other terrible things for a while and get themselves bumped up to Final Warning status. When this happens a lot of people make nice for a while, but once you're already there you're pretty much sunk unless you make quite an impressive turn around.

I really don't like to ban people. I make a lot of jokes about it, but when it comes right down to it I'd rather someone else handle the actual banning. Personally, I just want everyone to be nice and happy.

What about Skarr?

He posted porn.

Also it should be noted that in addition to just regular warnings, when things escalate to the point where someone might be banned for their actions, we let them know this. We inform members if they are on "Final Warning" status and it's explained to them that either they knock it off, or they will be banned.

So anyone who chooses to keep doing bad stuff even after being issued a final warning is just asking for it.

Edit: foa!

I didn't know 'Lord Xenahort' or Ansem as he is more familiarly known around here was banned until reading this Thread just now. However, I know why he was banned too because that Thread he made in EoEo was really one of the most freakiest I have ever read in any Forum anywhere. I am glad it was removed from the site.

However, Sapphire Star I feel really sorry for :(

She's opened up her heart on here and this place has been a mixture of life support and a therapy group for her in recent months.

I doubt she'll get unbanned. But I feel really sorry for her. This place meant alot to her, that much was obvious.

It should probably be noted that if you really want to know why a specific person was banned, you can ask a staffer in private and if they want to tell you, they will. We're under no obligation to inform the general public of why people were banned.

I know none of you have demanded anything and we've been happy enough to supply info in this thread but this is more for future notice.

More people are getting banned these days because us staffers are getting bored and if we don't like someone then we do our best to come up with a way to ban them. *straight face*

Usually the good admins and staff here are smart enough to remove any evidence of bannination for two reasons;

1: However much the person won't be around, it's generally not necessary to highlight why a person was banned i.e. naming and shaming. After all, what does it matter why someone was banned if they're not going to be around anymore?

2: Usually the infraction in question is against forum TOS, so really shouldn't be there in the first place.

Yeah but...

I really don't think Sapphire Star should have been Banned :(

I feel really sorry for her right now. Really, really, REALLY sorry for her! She has shared her life on here over the last couple of months and some people on here obviously meant a lot to her.

It seems very cruel to Ban her for mod-whoring, even if she has been warned before many times. Wouldn't it have been easier just to remove her ability to Post for a few days or weeks so that she learnt a lesson, instead of Banning her completely? Or just remove the offending Posts in question? I don't think she's ever sworn at anyone or been abusive.

It's just kinda sad knowing she's gone for good because she made a Thread saying how much she loves people on here and then, BOOM, 30 minutes later she is banished for eternity! :(

Wouldn't it have been easier just to remove her ability to Post for a few days or weeks so that she learnt a lesson, instead of Banning her completely? Or just remove the offending Posts in question? One of the reasons that people very rarely break rules and that EoFF has such a good reputation for not having abuse going on around the place is because of the way we deal with things. One major factor in this is that we don't give people temporary bans because then they figure they can 'get away with it' - instead we slam on massive bans that force people to not want to break the rules because they know they'll be gone for a long time. It also means we don't have to worry about people returning after their temporary ban expires and abusing in retaliation, which does happen in places that give temp bans. Also, you could look at it in a different way: Instead of thinking "They should have just made it seven days, instead they gave the member a permanent ban!" you should probably think "Man, they could have given the member a seven day ban before now, but they instead chose to just give them a nice, polite 'Final Warning' which meant that they could keep posting while still knowing that they're on their last legs."
I don't think she's ever sworn at anyone or been abusive.
She's been warned rather often for good reasons, I'll leave it at that.

Good people get banned if they break rules. This has happened in the past - including close friends of the staff group - but it has to if we want to be fair to all of the members. Everyone has to follow the rules, or else people will think they can get away with it because some other member did. It doesn't matter how good you are, you have to set examples for the newer members or you'll be warned/banned.

She can always appeal to her ban after two years, so it's not eternity.

Buuuut enough of discussing that ban for me as it's over and done with now.

Because we don't want you guys knowing that it's just a revenge ban, obviously! That's what I first thought. But then I thought, surely if it was a revenge ban, instead of keeping it quiet, you'd come up with a fake reason why they got banned, that you found amusing, an that could potentially cause them some embarassment.

Definately. If this place was like most other forums, ahh. I think it's fairly easy *not* to get banned here. And people just want to know why cos they are nosey, we all are, it's why when there's an accident in the street or a police car in your road you stop and stare. I can't really speak for the staff of this particular forum, but the other places I have been a staff member at kept it quiet for reasons of privacy. It is a dealing between a member and the staff. Outside parties do not need to be concerned with it. If a member wishes to know why a person was banned, they can contact the banned person and ask them.

Roogle

I strongly suggest that people remember that most users are banned with a very strong conviction in mind. I do not like seeing remarks commenting about how a specific ban was unfair made to the general public and I want those who have objections like that to speak to the staff privately and have it explained why that specific user is banned. Regardless, unless you have some significant tie to the user, it might not be your place to ask.

If we banned people for disagreeing with us, this forum would not be nearly as large, nor as popular. Hell, wouldn't that mean I'd be banning you now? You're expressing a negative opinion of how the staff operates after all.

The Trumpet Thief thing was a joke. I wasn't really enmeshed in the particulars, but he didn't actually post porn. You'll have to ask another staffer about that, one who was more involved.

I find it kinda funny how some people are saying, that they just KNOW that ~SS~ shouldn't have been banned. It's like, you don't even realize how many abusive/trolling/flaming posts/usernotes that have been removed or deleted by the Staff in this matter.

This thread is only still open because I think the entire Staff feels that it's important that the general public realize how bannings usual take place, and it isn't just a sudden, "hey let's ban him/her!" sorta thing. There's a process. And the offending member is given plenty of chances to shape up and they're informed of their current standing in regards to warnings and whatnot. Generally, people who are banned should not be surprised about it given that they were probably sent a FINAL WARNING, OMG, FINAL WARNING!!! notice.

Also, ditto DK. Let's not turn this into that sorta thread.

How do you even know who HOOTERS is?*magic*

This thread is only still open because I think the entire Staff feels that it's important that the general public realize how bannings usual take place, and it isn't just a sudden, "hey let's ban him/her!" sorta thing. There's a process.I've noticed that two to three threads like this are left open throughout a year, generally for the same purpose.

I wonder how many new levels of 'final warning' were invented for me.

Not nearly as many as HOORJ got.

Oh yeah, I always have to dig that one out, don't I? Considering how pissed off I got about the backlash from that, it's always me who brings it back up XD

I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but I feel somewhat responsible (and aroused!) about the stricter banning policies EoFF has been under the last year or two. HOORJ was, in my eyes at least, the first of the people no one really wanted to ban, really popular in the public's eyes, but utterly deserved it. No one on staff wanted to do it, except me, and I'm a pissy little bitch, so I banned him. People kicked up a fuss (amusingly enough, one or two of whom are now staff and have had to do exactly the same thing), but when it all came down to it, the only recompense any of the staff suffered is we realised how, well, bad things had gotten. And I totally got pissed off at everyone too. But as I said, I'm a pissy bitch.

Now, staff don't hesitate in banning people they may even like. They don't enjoy doing it, but they will if they have to. Gone are the days when they'd dither and waffle over it. If edczxcvbnm were to join EoFF these days and act how he used to when he was relatively new, he'd be banned. He doesn't like admitting it, but he's mellowed and matured over the years, and is a good member of the forums.

That harder edge, that show of backbone, I like to think I'm responsible for that, by example.

Or maybe I'm totally wrong and just have a big ego. XD

I don't mind banning anyone. In fact I enjoy banning in order to get my name on the ban list as much as possible.

Mostly because it is none of our business.

Keep on bannin', guys. You're doing a good job!

*slips BoB a twenty*I don't see why. Just because we're not in charge of banning people doesn't mean we shouldn't know why they were banned. Not that I really care whether I know or not. I just don't see the point in keeping it quiet.

It's more fun when it's public though. My brother didn't do all that faffing around getting warnings etc. He made his banning as public as he could. He was caring for the community. We witnessed his banning, an those of us who are great cried with sadness. An those who are lame tried to cry with joy, but didn't want to dedicate the time to it, because there was brown nosing to be done.

Her brother was the entertaining and endlessly amusing LUKEJAKE17 and the way he got banned was truly astonishing. No messing about from him. He told everyone exactly what he thought of them and even started singing a song by The Stranglers in one of his Posts. There is absolutely no way he should have been Banned if ya ask me, because he would have kept this place alive right now!

By the way... who are you as well Lindy? Never heard of ya.

The Hounen Matsuri Festival however was an example of going out with a bang.

Your brother is who now?

In fact, you're who now? Put it this way, in the limited time my brother was here, he was a damn sight more entertaining than you have probably been throughout your entire stay. Plus his put downs were far more amusing than yours. Saying: "You're who now?" At an internet forum, is in the same league of lameness as a real life: "Don't you know who I am?".
