I'm trying to broaden my musical horizons, and I'd like anyone out there to help me in my quest to find the best gateway artists of the following genres:
Jazz
Blues
Hip-Hop
Ambient
Reggae
Indie
Techno
World
If you wish to add anything to that list, feel free, I want to hear LOTS of different music.
I appreciate any help you guys can offer. :choc2:

Hip Hop - Roots Manuva, Sway, Klashnekoff and Black Twang.
Just a few.
As with Nujabes, yawn. Japanese Hip Hop is never really that good.

Lady Sovereign
Wow, Im surprised someone from the US has heard of Sovereign, she must be pretty big. I remember when she just broke into the underground music scene in London and she was sort of a joke. She got boo'ed when I went to go see her live once, the shame.

She got signed to Def Jam, so yeah.
She's been featured pretty heavily in mobile phone commercials lately. I'd heard of her before that somewhere and was interested. I can imagine her getting booed by a crowd of chavs that actually take the culture seriously - part of what I love about her music is the fact that she's having fun and being self-deprecating in talking about all this stuff rather than trying to come off as being hard.

Yup. She has also been number one on the TRL chart. As far as I remember she was the first English artist to ever do so... so, that's pretty impressive.
Anyway, listen to some M.I.A. ... she's somewhat similar to Lady Sovereign when it comes to their sound - she's just better in my opinion :)

Yes, I'm a fan of Alexisonfire and City And Colour already. Please note the list of genres I would like to find out more about in my first post. Thanks. :)
I downloaded some Nujabes and I actually really like it. MC Frontalot was most humourous, and NWA was awesome.
Thanks for the recommendations so far, but keep in mind I'd like to hear more than just Hip-Hop/Rap. Again, consult the list above. Cheers. ;)

Indie-wise:
Animal Collective
The Arctic Monkeys
Belle And Sebastion
Bright Eyes
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Death Cab For Cutie
The Decemberists
Fiery Furnaces
Franz Ferdinand
The Futureheads
Jet (technically garage, but Indie and Garage rock are pretty much the same)
Modest Mouse
Of Montreal
The Postal Service
The Smiths
The Strokes (Garage)
Ugly Casanova
The White Stripes (Garage, but I'm sure you're familiar with this band)
Wolf Parade
Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Garage?)
Nujabes is awesome, I don't really care what anyone has to say.

For some reason I'm doubtful of that, though I could understand if she was the first English rapper to make it that high.

Perhaps I can convert you into a prog rock fan. This site (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=1449)has free streaming samples of some of my favourite bands, and I've compiled a list of samples of some bands. For each link scroll down to the grey box and play them. Be warned that it's all very expirimental.
Pink Floyd (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=364) Best one: Time. (This selection is really not a very fair view of the band. If you want a good sampler ranging through the whole discorgaphy of the band, get this best of.) (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=1449)
Emerson Lake and Palmer (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=94) Best one: Hoedown
Frank Zappa (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1023) Best one: Peaches en Regelia
King Crimson (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=191) Best two: 21st Century Schizoid Man, Cirkus
So maybe not the songs I would have chosen for the best samples of the artists, but if you like what you hear let me know. And, if you're really interested, I have some more uploaded on my PC right now, and I could send you some more (PM me your email and I can attach them). Or you can look for some of the albums in your music store. The site also has reviews for literally every prog rock album in existence, and they're all fairly informative. Exact information is available if you want to try out an album.
EDIT: In light of Ryth's excellent suggestions, I'm going to add some more of my favourites:
Yes (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=105) Best ones: the first three
Rush (http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=609) Best one: Overture/Temples of Syrinx
On the topic of progressive I'd reccomend everything Vincent said and Rush, Yes, Coheed And Cambria (if you like them check out The Prize Fighter Inferno), Tool, Ayreon, dredg, and The Sound Of Animals Fighting.

Love pretty much all of those bands, I saw dredg live and they blew me away.
Thank you for the big list of indie bands Ryth, I've surprisingly heard of a lot of them before. :choc:
Response is great so far fellows, do keep it up. :hourglas:
Perhaps I should list the sorts of bands I already listen to, to give you all a better idea of what to recommend.
Currently, I'm a big fan of metal/hardcore. I like Between The Buried And Me, Poison The Well, He Is Legend, Throwdown, Hopesfall, all those kinds of bands. I enjoy some emo bands (Sunny Day Real Estate, Chamberlain), some techno/ambient artists (Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada) and some hip-hop (NWA, Dead Prez). Also a very big fan of Radiohead.

-Cursive (One Of My All Time Favorite Bands Start out with 'The Ugly Organ' CD.

Rap/Hip-Hop:
-Aesop Rock
-Cannibal Ox (One of my faves)
-Sage Francis (meh)
-Gangstarr (awesome)
-Classified (Very cool)
Techno (I'm gonna lump synthpop/campy/everything close to techno in)
-Definitely Aphex Twin
-Black Moth Super Rainbow
-Ratatat (Awesome Sythed out guitar, amazing stuff, you are warned.)
-The Octopus Project (More in the Post-Rock Vein)
-Cinematic Orchestra (Electronica, moreso)
-Venetian Snares (incredible Break-core/glitch beats, again, amazing)
-We Will Build (Incredibly Happy Dance-Tronica)
That should keep you busy for a while. (Oh, and when your friends are wondering who/what the heck you are listening to because they have no idea who it is, thank me!)
Also, I would like to know if you have ever heard about a genre called 'Post-Rock'? Its really slow melodic stuff (usually with no singing) that is very amazing really. Some of the most beautiful music you will ever hear. If You are interested, I will post up some Post-Rock bands for you as well.
Long Post Out!

Since you like ATDI, The Mars Volta should appeal to you. They were founded by the former ATDI singer and guitarist.

Blues:
Muddy Waters
Taj Mahal
BB King
Robert Johnson
Jazz:
Miles Davis
Herbie Hancock
Other:
Try some Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. You may like their later albums.

Try out ' Rachel's '
It's really different but is really good. There's no singing or anything, and I can't think of a word to describe the music... so just listen to 'em.
I forgot to mention The Mars Volta, so I second that suggestion.
If you haven't already, check out Muse as well. Definitely worth checking out. I haven't listened to them, but I hear Bloc Party, The Shins, Broken Social Scene, and Neutral Milk Hotel are also very good. Just thought you'd know.
I also like Phish, a band I've heard called prog and/or Indie on multiple accounts. I don't know if I'd say that, however it is a good band, and I thought it a good idea to reccomend them, because they're worth the listen to. I hear them called Jazz Fusion a lot of the time, so it seems to fit in regardless.

Meh. Frances was kinda lame in my opinion, almost like they got too cocky and decided to try something totally crazy thinking, "we rock!"

I liked the sheer overindulgence of it. :) I don't have any kind of objection to pretentiousness in an artist's work, so long as it sounds/looks good. I particularly liked how "Cassandra Gemini" was over half an hour long. Good stuff.

As did I, Frances stands as my favorite of their albums. It's definetly the most varied (and challenging), and a lot of the concepts and musical elements it introduced I have yet to hear from other bands.
Cygnus and Cassandra are easily two of my favorite songs by them.

For some of the earliest Fusion listen to The Mahavishnu Orchestra. They will blow your mind. In particular, "The Inner Mounting Flame" and "Birds of Fire". My favorite Fusion album, though, is Bill Bruford's, "One of a Kind". A masterpiece in my opinion.

No, He needs to listen to Nas and AZ. Easily the best living East Coast rappers. AZ is so incredibly underrated and to my dismay released a press statment saying his upcommign album may be his last! The man is a lyrical genious but can't sell for <img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif"><img src="/xxx.gif">. I have no idea why. he is raved about all over the rap indusrty but has barley pushed 1million copies in 12 years.
albums to check out
Nas: Illmatic, It Was Written, I Am..., Stillmatic, The Lost Tapes.
The others, Nastradomus, Gods Son, and Streets Diciple are all good albums but the others are his best.
AZ: Doe or Die, 9 lives, AWOL
Nature: For All Seasons
Nature is awssome, and this CD proves it.
Also The Firm album wich is Foxy Brown (best female MC imo) Nas, AZ, Nature. produced by Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters.

If you like long, long songs like me with pretentious but enjoyable composition, you might like the following albums:
- Emerson Lake and Palmer- Tarkus (the title track is a monster)
- King Crimson - Lizard (once again, an exteneded title track)
- Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother (an awesome giant neo-classical suite)
- Pink Floyd - Meddle (beautiful extended rock ballad)
- Pink Floyd - Wish you Were Here (about 25-30 minutes of excellent, steadily building rock broken into two parts).
- Rush - 2112 (it features a heavy rock suite)
These extra ones are even more challenging...
- Frank Zappa - Burnt Weeny Sandwich (jazz fusion monster)
- Frank Zappa - Waka/Jawaka (the album starts off with endless, crazy free jazz)
- Frank Zappa - Studio Tan (a neo-classical/jazz outing with a highly lyrical storyline)
- Jean-Luc Ponty - King Kong: Jean-Luc Ponty plays Frank Zappa (features a rare extended set of more lovable orchestral noodling that also features different versions of classic Zappa tunes)

Furthermore if you like pretentiousness, check out Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and their albums which mainly consist of 15-25 minute long pieces (usually divided into sections), and it's often beautiful stuff. The albums are:
F#A#(Infinity Symbol - which I can't type on here XD)
Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada (a two song EP, which is 30 mins or so long)
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (their best in my opinion - if you do give them a try, try this one first)

Yeah Floyd rules, but I'm sure he has heard them before, and your right about the Zappa, he was one of musics most underappreciated geniuses. (Is that even a word? )
