This also comes from the folks over at EGM, except unlike the last thread, this one isn't a rumor.

Guitar Hero II may already be on its farewell tour-MTV recently snatched up developer Harmonix for a super-star price of $175 million. With publisher RedOctane owning the Guitar Hero name, we may see MTV release its own virtual rocker under a different moniker. Sounds good in theory, but when you factor in MTV, we'll likely get a shoddy cash-in filled with loads of radio rubbish.

But guys, this way we can play thirty seconds of a song and then listen to screaming fans during the rest of it! And we can watch Laguna Beach during the loading screens! </sarcasm>

MTV could actually work for benefit. The RedOctane/Harmonix guys had some trouble with some of the recording artists they wanted on the game (Metallica comes to mind), but with a music brand as powerful as MTV they should have no problem.

Harmonix are the developers of the game, so this can only be good for Guitar Hero.

Consumerism outweighs any quibbly benefit derived from getting Metalica and other stubborn labels on the game. I do not get the point of this sell, as it seems horridly underbid. Was it a stock buy out or what? They could have made so much money off patents alone! [presuming they did indeed patent the guitar interface.

oi vey.

Ugh, I feel bad for Harmonix.

They were always this little studio that I always cheered for because they constantly were doing something so very different.

Hopefully MTV doesn't rape their creative ability with stupid attempts at hipsterism and blatant commercialism.
