Well I'll be darned. It actually could have been worse. I think I owe people money now.

That's a common misconception, stemming from the relatively sorry state of video game journalism in 1995. Some facts:
The demo was only intended as an experiment to test the possible implementation of a 3D Final Fantasy, not as an early form of Final Fantasy VII. Although this should have been made obvious by the fact that all of the characters featured are from Final Fantasy VI.
The demo was developed using stand-alone SGI workstations, and even though the N64 used SGI technology, it wasn't meant to indicate that a Final Fantasy game would be developed for that system--or any particular system, for that matter.

I always thought the reason why Square changed from Nintendo to Sony was that they wanted to use to slower but more compact CD for VII, but Nintendo refused to switch from catridges, so Square dumped them. Is this true?

I was always under the believe that they began developing FFVII for some attachment system for SNES that involved discs instead of cartridges, and but Nintendo dumped that project becuase well....thier dumb. So then with an already half finished FFVII, they switched to Sony who they would be able to actually convert thier work onto a few discs, rather then scrapping it all and trying to make something to fit on a single cartridge.

That's just what I've heard though. I'll wait for Kishi to set it all straight in a most comical way most likely.

The proposed CD add-on for the SNES would only have exhibited a jump in technology similar to that from the Sega Genesis to the Sega CD: prettier 2D graphics and CD-quality audio, but certainly no advanced 3D processing power. It was to be released in the early '90s, after all.

i decided to post this link. it's the same video but it's a lot better quality cos it's running from youtube

i'm so glad that they released it on playstation instead! did they remaster the music for that demo? cos it sucks!

also i doubt this was meant as a specific ff7 trial per se as ther is no mention of it at all

I found and article somewhere a little while ago about ff7 being on the nintendo. It looked more like a bad remake of ff6 though... I'm sure I saw Shadow and Locke and some girl who looked like a mix of Celes and Terra...

Edit:I realise now, after watching the video, that this was what you were talking about all along. (It took ages to load of my computer!) Just ignore what I said, if you please.

Thanks for the youtube upload, it actually ran good, google video sucks.

interesting to watch. it's also a little weird watching Locke use a whip and Shadow busting out Kung Fu/Wrestling techniques.

I heard there was an FFVII in production for the N64 but was abandoned when Square was won over by the possiblities of using CD-ROM, and that Nintendo was not going to have it from launch.

The difference in quality has absolutely nothing to do with it being stored on YouTube instead of Google videos. Absolutely nothing.

I think the girl might have been Kid from Chrono Cross. I could be wrong.

It says clearly at the end of the video "FINAL FANTASY VI: The Interactive CG Game," It had nothing to do with Final Fantasy VII or Chrono Cross.

Listen to Kawaii Ryuukishi, it will do you good.

Kinda makes sense to me, because of the character graphics. But, I never expected it to be true. Comes of no surprise though.

The only FFVII tech demo was for the PS3 at 2005's Eł, which is what spawned a whole new batch of remake theories, especially when EGM had to be arses and lie about it. Check it out on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNcYgnQpN0k).
