All right, assuming that his black magic is from his Lunarian heritage, and his power of summoning was a result of Zemus' influence. What do you think Golbez's actual class is? Do you think he may be a Dark Knight like Cecil?

I figured him like a more stronger version of a Dark Knight who had magic powers in addition to his fighting skills. Although I don't think Golbez could really be given any definite class based on previous classes due to all his different abilities. But clearly whatever he is is highly dark in nature.

I think Golbez's class is a Dark Knight, or as Bahamut2000X said, a stronger version of a Dark Knight. Maybe a Death Knight or something like that.

While Cecil's appearance as a Dark Knight appears to be modeled after FFIII's Demon Swordsman, Golbeza is more of a Dark Knight in the tradition of FFI and FFII.

I always considered Golbez a Black Mage. But him being a Dark Knight seems reasonable

Sorcerer, because there is no way a Dark Knight can use Meteor!

he's a very dark and powerful magician and i wouldn't really call him a knight so i guess sorcerer is right.

I much prefer the Class puppet myself.
I've always thought of him as a Sorcerer, though in FFIVA script I believe Tella refers to him as a such when you meet him again on Mt. Ordeals.

That's his race (both him and Cecil)
If you recall their father was lunarian and their mother was human.
But yeah, my educated guess would be that he is a Dark Knight.
I think it would make good game play sense to have it so that he was a Dark Knight while his brother is a Paladin. The whole Ying and Yang - Balance - Good vs Bad - Brother thing.

That's what I think as well. It makes me wonder how long Golbez had his henchman impersonating the King of Baron? The game or the manual mentioned that Cecil became a Dark Knight at the King's request.

You know, when Cecil was a Dark Knight, he didn't use a lot of magic. He was all about the attack with his awesome swords. In the FF4 that I'm familiar with, Golbez doesn't do a lot of attacking. He mostly casts all kinds magic.
The only class I can think of that appears in two characters is White Wizard, as Rosa and Porom. They both are proficient in white magic (obviously), and that's what defines "White Wizard". Porom can use "Twin" when Palom is around, and Rosa can use "Aim", but at their core, they use White Magic.
So if you take the only Dark Knight you see (Cecil), and look at what he dominantly does, you can assume that Dark Knights do that. Cecil attacks with his sword. In the non SNES versions, he can use "Dark Wave", but it's not too useful and doesn't accurately reflect his forte.
My guess is that Golbez's class is one you don't see in another character. The closest I can imagine would be the Lunar, as seen in FuSoYa. Golbez seems talented with magic, and is the nephew of FuSoYa, and was not raised as a Dark Knight by King Baron, like Cecil was.

You have to remember that while Cecil was a Dark Knight he was relatively low leveled so he didn't have much magic to begin with, and you encounter Golbez for the first time later in the game
And Lunarian is a race - its NOT a class.
Cecil was also demilunarian (see above).
And the unique magic spells innate to Golbez are probably incidental to his class. There probably just things creators added to make him a litter toughter and different as a boss.

Also, in FFVI, Mog's class and race are both Moguri, and Umaro's are both (abominable) Snowman.

Lunarian is Fusuya's class, though.
Even so, his skills more so represent a sage with ability to cast both white and blacks spells up to the strongest of them. I think they just decided to rename his sage class as Lunarian so people would realize he's not human. Although I can't imagine why, I figure anyone who says "I'm not a human" while sitting on a chair in a large crystal palace to be most definitly not a human. But that's just me. >.>

And where was this at by the way? I've never heard they had thier own classes in the game. Unless I missed it blatantly in the game (which I seem to have a tendancy to do in most games >.>), I'm assuming it's in an art book or some such extra thing? Hmmm I'm curious now to see what they classify Locke as. >.>

The original Japanese version of the game if I'm recalled well. Though I can't remember if they made Locke's class as "Thief" or "Treause Hunter". Guessing thief.
As for the original questions, wearing armour doesn't make one a knight, so I'm going with Golbez being a powerful Black Wizard.

He's a Summoner/Black Mage who wears armor. Nothing he ever does in the game demonstrates any finesse with weaponry, so he can't be a Knight. He can summon monsters and he can use black magic. So THERE.

He could only summon one monster. I don't think that would classify him as a Summoner. But I do agree about him being a Black Mage though

Judging by the fact that he starts off with the same exact equipment as FuSoYa I'd say he is some type of a mage or sage (exactly what a Lunarian is, a renaming of the sage class). Also in the rom, the starting equipment for Golbez is stored 2 slots down from FuSoYa's. The equipment is the same (except for the 255 "nothings" equipped in his left hand), but the slot isn't. So Golbez actually has his own starting equipment.

I can't see him as a dark knight, especially considering that he never phisically attacks. So it would be easy to classify him as a black mage, because he does fit that description, and summoner because he does that once, but I like to look back at the original FF sometimes and what do black mages evolve into? Black wizards. Besides, sorcerers can use both white and black magic, but Golbez is never shown using any type of white magic. Rydia is considered to be a summoner with black wizard tendencies, but I would consider Golbez (who gets beaten by the appearance of Rydia) to be the yang to her yin. So a Black Wizard with summoning abilities.
