View Full Version : How "Safe" Do You Feel On This Forum?

The Devil Man
12-02-2006, 01:14 PM
So yesterday yet another member got Banned for, what in my eyes, was pretty much nothing :( Jimmy Dark Aeons Slayer got Banned for posting a You Tube of a deformed guy with enlarged testicles which was also once shown in a documentary on the Discovery Channel that was neither pornographic or offensive. It was just Bizarre. That means in the past 7 days alone, Decessus, Genji, Reine and Jimmy Dark Aeons Slayer have all been booted outta here. All good members in their strange, wierd little way.

So this got me thinking. How 'Safe' do you actually feel on this Forum?

Do you ever worry that something you might Post will get you an instant-Ban as it has with so many others?

Do you think about what you type before you Post? Do you think 'Oh, I wanna post this, but the Staff will Ban me in a second so I better change it?'

Devil Man doesn't bother. But thats because Devil Man is Devil Man. If he gets Banned, too bad. Thats tough. At least Devil Man has the e-mail addresses of all His Good Friends on here so he can keep in touch with them one way or another.

But how safe do you feel? Do you ever worry about being Banned for somethng you say?

Bear in mind, Staff Decisions on who to Ban vary from person to person. While some staff are happy to let things go (some as in probably just one), others will warn you or Ban you one split second later.

Remember people: If you wanna stay here forever, Think before you type! (And, ya, Devil Man don't follow his own advice)

I feel pretty safe here, is almost one of the safiest forum actually... Sometimes adms over react a bit, but what can we do? I feel sorry for Jimmy though he was the only portuguese guy here! Now we just have 4 portuguese girls! :(

I'm constantly worried that if I ever give out my real location, Psy-bot will hunt me down and kill me.

Seriousness aside, the Mods etc don't make the rules, they just enforce them. To the letter. Actually, technically, some of them did make the rules. But the point is, just don't let your little pinky get out of line.

Also, I usually think before I type something extreme. For example, in a thread I once wanted to type "Psychotic and Levian are gay lovers", but it was on the same day that Psy had threatend to eat my soul, so I decided against it. There has been many of these sorts of moments, but I almost always see the consequences of my actions, and change my posts before I let anything too bad get said. Having said that, I have made a few mistakes. But I'm only slightly human.

You have to realize, Devil Man, we strive to keep the forums as work friendly as possible. I mean, for a lot of these things, it's a when in doubt, as the mods. If it involves genitalia in any way shape or form, save for precious few exceptions, it's best to err to the side of caution.

I think on the internet, as in real life thinking before you speak/post is kinda important, and if there's a chance it might get you banned, and you care about being here, don't do it. I often think a lot before I post cos I guess I'm a bit obsessive like with I am with most things, and if I think something might come across a bit offensive to someone I'll change it and just let it go. So yeah, I feel safe xD

Thats the kind of answer i'd expect from someone so snobbish about their "perception" of art.

Or is it just too diffcult to answer directly instead of attempting, and failing, to be witty?

And Xander, point taken. Good point.

You see, this is the thing I dont get. There is some 'sophisticated' flaming that goes on around here which people get away with, especially in EoEo which is no different to the way most regular people get banned.

Some people, when they get angry or annoyed because of personal attacks will respond with something like 'Oh my God, You smurfin' suck, I hope you die, go die in a river, thx, you suck!' and boom! They are gone. But look at some of the 'debates' in EoEo which is the exact same thing but using different vocabulary to insult the Posters. Saying stuff like 'I find your opinions bizarre and insulting, and I think you are ignorant and ill-informed' is pretty much the same thing as 'You're smurfin' st00pid!'. Yet it goes totally unpunished.

You see what I am saying? Double standards and showing the same rudeness.

NeoCracker
12-02-2006, 03:29 PM
Rarely is that ever the reason people are banned. Where did you get that Idea?

IF they are banned for flaming it means it happened a lot and is really bad. And trust me, it needs to be pretty bad.

Back on topic: I feel quite safe. As far as I remember I haven't gotten any warnings from the staff members up until now. It is true that the staff can be a bit strict here, but I think it's needed. If there weren't rules and strict staff-members this forum would probably be filled with wackos and all hell would eventually break loose. Even though that sounds like fun, it would get tiresome after some time and people in general would just stop coming here.. at least that's what I think.

Quindiana Jones
12-02-2006, 04:26 PM
The "sophiscated insult" example you gave would be accepted because they say that they think that person is wrong, and being whatever it ws that you said. That's different to saying they're stupid.

For example: I could tell Breine* I think his view on pancake flipping is ridiculous and illogical, and anyone who tried it his way would have to be stupid and wanting to be burned and not get banned because it's what I think. OR I could tell him he's a stupid retard who was clearly raised by invalids if he thinks that pancakes can be flipped sideways. I mean, seriously, how many toes does he have? That would probably get me warned, if not banned.

But yeah, your point remains the same. I just thought I'd pick you up on that before anyone else could use it against you. BECAUSE I LOVE YOU DELLAS!

*This has nothing to do with Breine, other than the fact he's right above me. For all I know, he could be an expert pancake flipper.

I love you too Quinny :lovers:

But lets take this further. Suppose something you said annoyed me and I replied with;

'Do you wanna smack in the face? :mad2:'

I would recieve a warning for threatening behaviour.

But if I said 'I would like to connect my right hand clenched into the shape of a fist with your left cheek and hopefully cause you a signifciant amount of injury' I would perhaps get away with it because of my sophisticated language.

Likewise, if I said 'Quin, you are so stupid! Shut up and stop Posting!' that would get me in trouble.

But if I said:

'Dear Quin N Tonic, might I take this oppourtunity to inform you that you are an ill-educated and ill-informed oaf and your brain power is functioning at approximately 90% below its possible capability, so could you please refrain from expressing your opinions until you are wiser.' I would get away with it because of better vocabulary.

Ergo...

Semantics, dear boy, semantics :holmes:

Or something like that.

But remember I think you are a smart guy and I love you! :lovers:

That is not correct. I would personally warn anyone for any of those examples. Also, editing DM's posts is my new hobby. ~Shlup

I sit back, watch, and chill. I stick to the rules as much as I can, edit anything I say in a rant (if I feel a little remorse for my victims, that is) that and I don't smack offensive things over my signature, posts and threads. I delete stuff I don't want to be repeated/try to out-edit Resha. And I don't double post! So I won't get my head kicked off or something. Once I doubled threaded - the forums were being slow and I kinda double clicked the "Post Thread" button a lot of times because I was so desperate to get something out to the masses. Yeah, I had a thread all to myself ^^;;

QUIN'S POST SOMEWHERE IN THIS VICINITY.

DELLAS' POST HERE.

See, I think you'd get a slight warning for that. Maybe not an official one, but I can imagine a CK or summat would tell you to stop being so rude. That was mainly aimed at the oaf part, whereas if you said this: *changes name*

"Devil Man, usually I like you, but your opinion on card cutting is ridiculous. It's a pure fact that cards cannot be cut in a certain way so that Nessie will pop out of the King of Hearts face! It will never happen! Your opinion is therefore wrong, but not just wrong, it's also stupid. I can't believe you'd think like that, so I'm going to assume you think it's funny. You're wrong. It was a stupid post, and your opinion is the same."

I think you'd be fine. If someone knows fo' sho' if that'd get me a spanking, then feel free to tell me.

As long as you don't say summat like "You are stupid" or "You idiot" then it's usually fine. As long as you clearly state that you only think their opinion on that particular matter is stupid, thus making them seem stupid, I think you'd be fine.

Really, if you know or think something has a chance to get you banned then why would you say it? If it's something that could be rude, again I ask, why say it? Also, knock it off with the modwhoring. Telling someone they're going off topic isn't your job. Warn it, if you think it's necessary. I didn't see too much wrong with that post.

Another thing, don't ever insult anyone like you did Chemical again. That was beyond rude. THAT is the sort of thing that will get you banned very quickly.

Adhere to the UYFB rule and things should always work out nicely.

It should be said that the word "safe" has ever entered my thoughts when thinking of these fora. That is to say, I have never regarded them as safe or unsafe, because I have never considered myself in danger of anything here. If I were to be banned, it would probably be purposeful, so it would not constitute a danger, per say.

If you skipped this post because it contained more than one sentence, raise your hand. :|

This is a private forum and there are certain etiquette's you should have (it sounds snooty but its just a "standard" to uphold). Obscene things would show that you are probably a unsavory person and a admin will most likely boot you not because you did anything wrong neccerly but because because the staff doesn't want people like that around.

Take for example some staff openly spam, insult flame whatever, go beyond the set limits of avatar and sig limitation's and have nothing to worry about.

Do I feel safe? don't really care this is just a forum for open discussion even tho this place is really great and I have some fond memories here I can't say I ever even thought about being banned... not for a while anyway things aren't looking to friendly in the forum it would be safe to say that "Marshal Law" has been declared here

Anyone who hasn't received several PM warnings, one of which has the words "Final Warning" in them shouldn't have any reason to fear, unless they have some inclination to post or link to porn on this site.

That's best avoided by, you know, not posting/linking porn, and never direct-linking images since a lot of sites like to be buttheads about it.

Citizen Bleys

Adhere to the UYFB rule and things should always work out nicely.

In theory. The UYFB rule isn't necessarily canon here.

EDIT: I should clarify, since that sounds like a potshot. The UYFB rule, by its nature, is dynamic. A true implementation of it requires a final authority--one person who makes the calls, and that person cannot be an imbecile. In order to promote solidarity, it's neccesary in a mutli-authority environment to attempt to codify the UYFB rule in writing. Anything in writing is static--it cannot react to reality, since reality is in a constant state of flux. Hence, the UYFB rule, once codified, ceases to be the UYFB rule.

Yamaneko
12-03-2006, 01:13 AM
The UYFB rule is a nice paradox since someone who actually has a brain wouldn't need to utilize the rule and those without brains are doomed from the start.

Add Dignified Pauper to your list of recent bans Devil Man. :( What could he have done? I thought he was a respected member... and besides, he seemed to have a lot of experience with the rules as well. Surprising.

Anyway, I feel pretty safe myself. Though I haven't had an official PM warning, I have been warned not to link to one webcomic and one animimated parody, and I've had a few posts edited. Despite this, I always try to follow the rules, even so more now that I have more experience with them, and I never intentionally try to get the CKs or administrators angry. So yeah, I think my ass is covered for now. :D

Sometimes I wonder though, especially when people like Diginified Pauper go.

Ya, it is.

But why did the Post get deleted? Can the Moderator who deleted it please tell me via PM why it was removed? :( All I did was answer kikimm directly.

Anyways, what that Thread said, amongst other things, was that some members on here are totally immune to being Banned no matter what they say so they dont have to worry at all about what they Post. Sure, some Posts may get deleted, but ultimately a couple of members are permanently safe and dont need to worry about what they say.

I wasn't going off-topic, because that thread I Posted was regarding my topic anyway :( Thats why I posted Aaron's Thread because I was responding to the First thing she said, the: 'How the Hell do you know this?' part. Right here:

Bear in mind, Staff Decisions on who to Ban vary from person to person. While some staff are happy to let things go (some as in probably just one), others will warn you or Ban you one split second later.

One question: How the hell would you know?

I posted Aaron's stuff because I was just trying to show how it's kinda unfair and why I feel so unsafe on here sometimes because some folks are immune to being Banned :( I wouldn't make an unfair claim against the Staff without some prior evidence.

Devil Man, your not the first person to complain about this. Elitism in the eyes of the average member is as old as the forum itself. The thing of it is that currently (being the past couple years) it isn't so much favoritism as it is the average member not liking being kept in the dark. If you think some people are immune to banning then give specific examples of who, and what they have done to earn being banned. As for the people who have recently been banned, you already know they deserved it, you just want to feed your paranoia.

Being a vigilante doesn't bring you above the law. The cops will pull you down just as fast as the "real criminals", and sometimes faster for the attention they bring to themselves.

Our dear FFX-2 vigilante knew this. His banning doesn't make me feel unsafe. At the heart of the situation, despite the reasons behind it, he knew what he was doing was ban-worthy. I do somewhat agree with the reasons, but definately not his methods.

As far as some of the other examples, their simple problem with authority it what got them banned. If the cop tells you that something shouldn't be done, and then you do it again in their sight, is it no wonder you get busted? If a mod tells you your signature or whatever is wrong, it doesn't help to say fuck you and put it right back up.

I don't feel sorry for members who get banned for self-destructive behavior.

Having a tiny forum myself I know a bit more about why the guy was banned. Here in the US there is a law called "Child Online Protection P.. Act" (COPPA) that mandates that all content unsuitable to people younger than 13 be clearly labeled and blocked. That video probably was too risquee. Discovery Channel has the lawyers to show it but this forum owner, who doesn't charge a cent to it's users does not have the same deep pockets and corporate structure they have.

So the mods and owners play favorites ? Big deal, you get what you pay for. Those posters who "can do no wrong" have been here for years and have helped make EoFF what it is today. Have you ?

Stop whining and try to pitch in to help make EoFF better

Devil Man, your not the first person to complain about this. Elitism in the eyes of the average member is as old as the forum itself. The thing of it is that currently (being the past couple years) it isn't so much favoritism as it is the average member not liking being kept in the dark. If you think some people are immune to banning then give specific examples of who, and what they have done to earn being banned. As for the people who have recently been banned, you already know they deserved it, you just want to feed your paranoia.

Earlier on I posted a Thread made by Aaron and he stated very clearly on who is immune to being Banned. And this person pretty much says anything about anyone and gets away with it.

But that Post got removed by Miriel so I think that Thread is not safe for public consumption :(
Why would a thread that is pretty readily available for <!--public reading (http://www.lastupload.com/files/4/effoff1.htm)--> *snip* Image not appropriate. be removed?

Oh yeah, cat time.

God almighty. I had never seen that DVD thing before. I am keeping score here. Someday I am going to hurt you all in ways you can't imagine.I have had that DVD cover in my image archives for years. It makes me cry to know it has taken this many years for you to have finally seen it, Unne.

We should update with another DVD or Luv Luv book. Or hell, just get the sex tape leaked to the internet.

Yay! Snipped twice in one post! By two different people!

But seriously, I can understand the cat thing, but how was the "image" inappropriate?

Not ready everything people have said, its too long.

Its a forum, who cares if you feel safe? So yeah blah blah its a 'family friendly forum' but dosn't mean you can ban everyone that could cause the slightest offence.
Honestly? I think that some of the mods etc are too sensitive and need to cool down a little.
So I've not been about for most of these bannings, and I really don't care about most of them. But one or two people who were one of the reasons I liked to come in here have been banned.

But *shrugs* its only the internet. Not as if they were banned from real life... or something

It is grimly ironic that if Quin N Tonic or anyone attempts to Spam, his Posts will be deleted or he'll get a 'kind request', mafia-style, from Psychotic to calm down, but it is okay for Mod's to freely Spam in any thread they feel like with not-so private conversations.

Grimly ironic indeed :eep:

It certainly is Dellas. You know what we should do? We should revolt.

This leads me happily onto: I don't feel safe at all in a place that allows the people in power to get away with pretty much everything that your average Joe would get a slapping for.

Do you know what happens to people who revolt?

They get Banned.

Like Primus Inter Pares, AKA PiP, May Mother Nature Bless His Soul.

Don't try and rebel Quinny :( I'd hate to see you get shot.

But if you DID rebel, you'll become the greatest freedom fighter since Che Guevera. Your face will be on posters and t-shirts in University campuses the world over.

Actually...

They have let my spam in this thread go, as my last few posts have nothing to do with the topic and place the blames on the admins for, not only stopping the spam, but for contributing to it themselves.

REally no one speaks on topic in this thread at this point. Why? No one knows. Will it ever stop? Only the staff knows.

Well, unless their passing around blunts again, in which case it will be about ten minutes before they realize whats going on in this thread, another 10 minutes to decide it needs closed or controled, and 3 hours before Yams gets the energy to tell the rest of the staff to do something about it, 30 minutes before the staff reads his Pm, and 1.5 hours to respond accordingly.

Please dont' hurt me Leeza :(

Do you have some sort of special connection with the staff, apart from the Levian thingy in your sig?

And more importantly, do you feel safe in this Forum?

Loony BoB
12-04-2006, 08:42 PM
Devil Man, if you could get banned for being revolting, you'd have been banned already.

Whoever mentioned the mafia - was it Chemical? - hit the nail on the head. If you cause too much trouble then the staff will edit your posts to include porn and then leave it there for a few minutes so people see "you" posting porn! Then they ban you!

And because I'm on staff and can ban most of you suckers, I feel perfectly safe. 8-)

There will always be people who feel safe because they stick to the rules and don't push too many buttons.
Likewise there will always be trolls, the kind of people who like to push the boundaries and try to stir up trouble in a community. These are the kind of people who spread word that the staff is inconsistent, try to get people to revolt, bring up bannings constantly, post borderline topics or things that commonly cause heated debate, encourage people to view other members (including staff) negatively and idolise banned members by doing things such as, oh, I don't know, putting pictures of them in their sigs. Notable that most members - in fact, the massive majority of members - never do this. This is why trolls stand out like a light bulb. Always in the middle of the controversy, or nearby. Trolling is, of course, a matter of opinion and also a bannable offence, meaning that if the staff view you as a troll they can ban you for being one. So we could technically ban someone who we view as a troll whenever we feel like it. I legitimately hope you do feel unsafe, Devil Man. Trolls should not feel safe in Eyes on Final Fantasy. However, you are amusing! :D

Also, staying on topic would be nice, you're right. :)

My Mom, Devil Mom, will be so sad to hear that :(

She don't like it when people call her son revolting.

THAT'S HER JOB :mad2:

And Loony BoB, do you feel safe on this Forum? Do you ever wonder if your position is 100% secure?

Or do you go to bed at night with a loaded gun, just in case?

Burtsplurt
12-04-2006, 08:50 PM
Yeah, I feel safe. I sometimes don't like the way certain members of the Staff act, but mostly they get things right. I think that when you've got a forum of this size and a proportionally large staff, that's probably the best you can ask for.

If you don't feel safe, don't play so close to the busy road. Or something. Stranger danger.

 Get out of my head, man!

I couldn't feel more safe at EoFF. I only have to worry about the knives in the staff forum, not to mention the sniper rifles in the FG (aka banned member) camp. Luckily for me, they've got worse accuracy than a heavily drunk man in a lavatory.
