I was wondering everybody knows that professional wrestling is fake to a certain degree but do you think professional wrestling is gay?

My dad told me a long time ago that he thinks professional wrestling is gay and everytime I watch X-Play review a WWE video game they talk about how much they think professional wrestling is homoerotic.

Most of the wrestlers aren't gay, or don't have gay characters, so I don't see how it is gay. It's as gay as any kind of fighting is gay, wrestling is just a sort of play fighting.

I'm sort of torn between being serious or not. On one hand, I want to say it's basically softcore gay porn that the whole family can watch, but on the other hand I want to say that straight guys are already way too phobic about being in contact with each other in any way because people label them gay ASAP (which is insulting for some reason I guess), so to label wrestling as gay just furthers the idea that men must be 10 feet apart at all times.

I do not recognize things as true defintions simply because a group of people decided to start using it in place of another word. Typically when a person calls something "gay" s/he means that, like homosexuality, it is generally frowned upon and not recognized as a good thing. Happy or Homosexual are the only meanings of the word "gay" that I will recognize as being correct.

Gay began to mean homosexual a long time ago, from a movie I believe, and it was used as a sort of code for people to recognize each other since discrimination was so high. They also used to say "Are you a friend of Dorothy's?" And if you said yes it meant you were homosexual (that's where the rainbow thing comes from...Wizard of Oz, over the rainbow, Dorothy, you know).

Anyway, since gay just means happy and is not negative it was latched on to and kept as slang and is now considered a double meaning word officially. Gay as a synonym for unlikeable is heterosexist slang and frowned upon because it puts forth the idea that being gay is something you would not want to be and is an insult.

So, that hoo-ha outta the way, this is like the third post I've seen like this lately. "Not gay meaning homosexual, the one meaning dumb." That sounds as ignorant as "That's so black. Not black African-American, but the one meaning stupid." You have to realize it sort of puts you in question when you run about saying such things. I think I'm more bugged by how socially accepted it is then it even being used hmm...

I love how people say its fake, yes, it is fake, more than half of everything said is scripted, and yet they really fall face first, back first, front side first, or anything, from the top rope. Its not like they magically catch themselves in the air, yes, they may land a special way to make the fall less painful, but the bottom line is they still feel some pain when they hit the ground, and its not like they land perfectly every single time.

Anyway, in the West, many male vs. male sports can trace some, if not most, of their aspects to classical Greece, where men oiled themselves up and often competed naked, as well as where homosexuality was at least tolerable, if not outright accepted.

Even in sports where athletes were not competing against each other one on one, it wasn't simply about who was fastest or strongest...it was about appreciating the magnificence of the human form. Greeks were not ashamed of appreciating a man's proportions or muscle tone...heck, we even give a nod to it today when we define a muscular male as "chiseled", "sculpted", or "cut", that is, like (one of those nude Greek) statues.

So if you wanted to call appreciation of masculinity by competitors and spectators as homoerotic, then I would have to say that many sports are inherently "gay." Wrestling is just probably the most obvious.

I don't know if that's true or not but it sounds plausible, considering that the referee, probaby wouldn't stop a match on live tv just so one of the wrestlers could take a piss break.
