Help! (Nam-Yensa Sandsea)

I want to know wether you have to fight the Emeralditan in Nam-Yensa Sandsea or not? I just want to know if he's optional or must-be-defeated monster?

Purely optional. But if you beat him you can wrap up a sidequest and get an item that's nifty to help bring down the next boss. But not neccesarry. I beat the next boss without it, and then got the item afterwards and went, doh.
