What are your memories of the first times you ever got to use the internet (keep it clean please! ;)), and what did you first use it for?

I remember the first time I ever used it was at my brother's house, and I'd found this ad for a chat room in some teen girly magazine. TeenChat it was called actually XD I really wanted to go on and the first time I chatted on there, just saying hi, and asl, I thought it was AMAZING. I didn't want to leave.

Then when I got the net myself, I had dial up, and I had to save up to use it, so I'd save pennies in a bottle, then when I had like 60p I'd go on the net for an hour. ^_^ I was really into Dawsons Creek when I got my own internet, so I'd go on the site and download songs, intros and wallpapers and stuff. All that real media player stuff. Weird how much I appreciated it cos I didn't get much time on it but...same with everything in life I guess!

Omg, this was a long time ago. I think when I was about 12 (back in 1997, my dad had gotten AOL and I used to chat in the Nick-o-lo-deon AOL chat and since I was younger my screen name was smily (suppose to be smile-y) because I didn't know how to spell. xD And then when I was 14 I went over to this iSafe chat in which I was made a JrChatMod because you had to be atleast 18 to be a Mod and actually get to do the banning and such. I just got to tell people to be nice to each other and what not.
Then at 15 I went over to MSN chats before they were subscripts, then they became subscripts, so I went to msngroups, then I bought a subscript and then they stopped msn chat. u u;

Creepy thing is, The chat I go to now, other than #eoff has like... 4 people that I knew from when I was 15. It's a small internet world after all.

Looking up the official Oasis website :).

We had dial up as well, so getting on the internet used to be a major investment of time, plus my parents we always picking up the phone when I was on :(.

It was a fun time, though.

Oh man, such a while ago! but I think my first experience with the internet was when I accidentally clicked onto a nude site, and stayed their for half an hour before hurryingly clicking off. Good times!

We first got it (AOL Dial up) when I was about 13 or 14. I only ever used to look up stuff on startrek.com and rarely gamefaq's and even more rarely stuff for school :D.

I was the opposite of Reno is my Man and hated the pokemon trend and first came online to discuss my distaste for it. I went into a pokemon chatroom xD and started insulting it, then I ended up making friends. I'm not really sure how that happened, but a lot of people were my age so I got along great. And then I met this guy that I really liked and we dated online or something. Then my friend Allison came and he was like, she's a lot prettier, I'm going to date her instead. And that was kind of it. I was an interesting 10 year old.

I first had internet when I was 17, stupid times, I mainly used it to get as much FF pics and songs as I could. XD
I first had a dail up modem that was costing just a little of my wages, then got another dial up modem which was costing about 1$ pare hour. Now, I have a 24 hours wireless internet which cost 50$ pare month, alot better.

Our internet was very, very, VERY slow when we first got it, but I remember finding a cool picture of Squall that I used as a background. I also remember looking at some disney websites.

I can't remember. I'm assuming it was in 1997 or so. (would have made me about 14 or 15.) I remember my first IM convo, it was on ICQ and I chatted with my cousin for a bit. And I got my first Hotmail account in 1997, I believe.

In 1998 I started frequenting Redwall roleplaying InsideTheWeb message boards and trolling *cough* I mean, uh, roleplaying on them. I also had an old Geocities page, I believe it was OMG BETS DRAGON BALL Z SITE EVAR BUT UNDER CONSTRUCTION!!11 or something. *shudders*

And once I looked up how to get all the heart pieces and skulltulas in Zelda: OoT.

That's really all I can remember. My internet usage was very sporadic until about recently. I missed out on most of the Intarweb between about 1999 and 2004 or so.

It was back about 1997. We had a new computer, dial-up, and a 32.2 modem. Hi-speed, man! The very first thing I did was look for information on Shadowrun because I really liked playing that tabletop RPG at the time.

Napster, back in ye olden days when they were the cutting edge of piracy. I used to hang out in the Punk and Metal chatrooms, whilst downloading away on my 28.8k.

I think it was 1998, at college. We were in a computer room, so we decided to try out a chatroom. I think there were five of us sat next to each other, pointlessly chatting away on the internet instead of talking. It was pretty cool, somehow. Maybe it was just the opportunity to create stupid names (mine has stuck since then).

I think our family first got the internet in 1999. It was rubbish dial-up Freeserve. You only had to pay for the cost of the calls - a revelation! The speed, however, was not a revelation. I think I used it mainly for Yahoo! chat. I thought the rest of the internet was pretty rubbish (it still is).

Omgosh, Yahoo! chat. xD

I was like 11 year old, I got to know quite a lot of regulars in those chat rooms lol. Old men tried to get me to be their "girlfriend" xD I didn't fall for it >_> Even an eleven year old should know better if someone goes "Wanna be my girlfriend? How old are you? Yeah, I'm 11 too ;)" But yeah, those were interesting times... xD

After Yahoo chat, FFWA ^^

Edit: Ooo even before that, I posted in the FFWA guestbook I think ^^ And someone emailed me saying they liked my email and we had many a emails back and forth :3 His name was Bryan or something. ._. My email address was tifalockheart99 at yahoo, haha. :3

I dunno. I used it first in ym family for research and such.

When my dad got onto AOL chatrooms, my sister started playing slingo like a fiend, and eventually I, too, learned that the net could be fun. Eventually I was multitasking by researching american history, looking up dinosaurs (Nobody knows anything about the Dravidosaurus), and RP chatting in AA AOL chatrooms.

Dial up was so slow, yo.

I think I was 8 the first time I used Internet. I was 8 about 11 years ago, so that must've been around 95/96, with a 14.4kb/s modem, I remember connecting through an application called "Trumpet Winsock" or something, which looked like notepad.

I'm not sure what I started out doing, I think I explored a lot before I actively engaged into it. When I thought I knew my way around enough, I started visiting Funplanet, playing their games and chatting (always wishing I was a little older so I didn't have to lie about my age to get Lisa13 and lovecatz14 to chat with me). I loved it there, it's the first site I clearly remember, except maybe Hotmail.

AOL and Yahoo chatrooms, Napster, and then playing the first Diablo a lot make up most of my early internet days. Before Mr. Rantzien entered my life, it's all mostly an uninteresting internet blur though.

I remember going into AOL chatrooms and not having any idea what was going on.

I remember finding the Cartoon Network AOL community and being all excited.

Later, and my earliest fond memory of the interenet, I found the opening sequence to Sailormoon SuperS, watched it, and was like "OMG THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER SAILOR MOON IN JAPAN IS SO COOL OMG *CALLS ASHLEY* OMG!"

My first memories after getting the internet at home involves going on a Norwegian chat site where I met this guy named Too_Cool, typing in a lime font. We ended up getting to know eachother because we were both being obnoxious in the chatroom, all in good fun, though. My nick was Cloud, so we talked a lot about Final Fantasy etc, and he's the one who linked me to this forum actually. :p I ended up moderating that chat site two years later btw.

I remember the first website I went to was archiecomics.com because I remembered they'd started printing their URL on the comics and I had one handy when at a friend's house who had just got the internet.

um, my early internet years were mostly spent at talkcity, where I took RPing seriously without realizing it wasn't RP. Sadly I had chosen the nick senatorkitten and so one night, pretending to actually be a cat, I said something unfortunately like "/me takes a bath" and some guy pipes up with "Can I watch"

"Um. . . . . . no"

xD

then there was WoFS. I emailed poor kellilla a blow by blow description of comments I had on her art and she told me that Ihsould just go to her forums for that stuff and I didn't know what a "BBS" was so it was scary. and then it was my first forum.

then I started getting into harry potter RPGs, and they were all on dumb little expages xD but that's where I started to learn HTML :D then I found one that was defunct and everyone moved to Magic Hogwarts pretty much, and I stayed there until it died, and I met a bunch of people there that I had (and still have) much <3 for, one I met, and one who introduced me to final fantasy.

My very first times were just to research pokemon and digimon stuff cause I was bored. Every now and then I would go into a chat room to talk for a bit.

But when I seriously began to use it, was when I first joined EoFF, as I made it a habit to try and get on every week to talk. Mostly about planning for FFXI like 3 years in advance or some such crazy amount of time. XD

FFAlways [1 (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://ffalways.simplenet.com)] [2 (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http:/ffalways.simplenet.com/ff*)] and to a lesser point, FF Citadel - The two websites I originally went to in order to get information on FFVII & VIII. FFAlways to this day remains one of my inspirations when coding for EoFF. It was a very small site that only covered two games and had no interactive areas, but it had stuff on it that no other site thought of.

Yahoo! Chatrooms - Where I spent my extremely early days chatting.

WWF.com - Back when WWF was cool.

All back in 1997-98. I discovered EoFF in 2000, these were my first forums.

The New Leaf Academy - a website dedicated solely to the Suikoden series - was my first 'real' adventure on the internet as a whole. Sadly, it was removed a few months after I joined and made a name for myself, although the majority of the members have since migrated to an assortment of other forums, with a small group of them (the ones I knew the best) taking residence up at Tenzan Pass. I'm a member there, too, but I hardly talk to anyone there anymore. Before then I only used it to play Diablo. Occiasionally I would play

Yahoo! Games. :monster:

I had a near undefeated record in checkers, a decent record in chess, and I used to wipe the table clean with those I played scrabble with.

I'm so jealous of all you people that started going to Neopets several years ago. I only started going in 2004 and I missed out on so many fun plots ;_;

(this has been a public service announcement by your friendly neighborhood Neopets addict.)

To keep this on-topic-ish... my first "real" forum (non-InsideTheWeb) was BlizzForums, which I joined in early 2003, I believe. But because I didn't have internet at home for another year after that I could only get to it at school. So I ran to the computer lab between classes so I could get on. Good times.

I was around eleven or so when my dad first allowed me to try out our dial-up connection. He was showing my brothers and I how to look up video games and cheats for them. I think he let us use Lycos for all of our searching. That was my first memory regarding my using of the internet, and I recollect no other significant uses of it until I played Diablo on Battle.net.

It was 1996... TEN YEARS AGO. O_O

Anyway. 1996 was mostly spent chatting on a Green Day guestbook where it was treated as a chatroom. The following years was spent chatting at Nintendo.com. Fun days those were.

Mine was also in 1996. 11 years old, and didn't have the internet at my home yet. I still have the same hotmail address that I made that day, a few weeks after I started high school, still in active use.

This was also around the time that I discovered DragonBall Z (my hotmail address is DBZ related), so a lot of my time was spent absorbing as much as I could about the thing. That was probably where my prowess for using search engines was cultivated. AltaVista was the greatest thing ever back then...
