We're almost at the end of the year, so what have been peoples' favourite albums/singles etc of 2006 (by which I mean albums released in your country during 2006)? Give lists, give reasons if you want, give whatever you feel like.

I need some time to think of my favourites, so I won't post them yet but what do others think?

Tool - 10,000 Days

I may never have to listen to another album ever again. Utterly mind blowing. In fact, I listened to it at least once (usually twice or more though) all the way through, everyday for a period of about 6 months or more straight. Still not sick of it either.

They released music in 2006?

I'm never up on current music and more or less prefer it that way. Every once in a while, a new artist will catch my ear, but I'm completely happy to listen to what I consider the 'classics' and the latest work from those artists, at least until they completely jump the shark and I have to resort to only listening to their older stuff. I might give the latest Jay-Z a listen when I get the chance. That said, I did enjoy the latest offerings from Bruce, David Gilmour, Tony Bennett, Norah Jones, DMB and Pearl Jam, but I haven't really come across any newer artists this year other than Belle And Sebastian and DCFC, who are once again, not exactly new anyway.

Take care all.

'Stadium Arcadium' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
'Light Grenades' by Incubus.

Both awesome.

Haven't bought any other albums from 2006. Apart from those two, there's been nothing else that's really interested me in new music. I mainly buy older albums.

Got a fair few other albums, but these have been the five I've listened to the most this year.

Joanna Newsom - Ys.

I was going to list a few others, but Ys is so awesome that I don't want to bring it down with merely "good" albums.

Cz
12-15-2006, 01:38 PM
Not that much, actually. Whereas 2005 was chock-full of great albums, I can't think of a single brilliant record that came out in 2006. Guillemots' Through The Windowpane is perhaps the closest this year got to something spectacular, but even that seems to be a bit of an overstatement.

So yeah, try a little harder in 2007, please. :D

I'm not up into modern music, as I regard most of it as crap. Weird Al's new songs are the only thing that really caught my interest. Otherwise, it was mainly a bunch of songs that were either totally pathetic or rap/hip-hop (which I hate).

Shine On...

Mmm, so many. I'll forget a lot, but oh well.

Albums:
Joanna Newsom - Ys (My favourite album of this year. Pure beauty.)

Lullabye Arkestra - Ampgrave
Les Georges Leningrad - Sangue Puro
Animal Collective - Hollindagain
The Octopus Project and Black Moth Super Rainbow - The House of Apples and Eyeballs
Battles - EP B&C

You've got a rather nice list there. I'd have to say that a couple of those stand out big for me and are listed below.

1. Ratatat - Classics
2. Battles - EP B&C
3. Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds
4. Les Georges Leningrad - Sangue Puro
5.Venetian Snares - Cavalcade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms

Nice list Aurey person!

k, here's me copying and pasting a top ten list I made at another forum three weeks ago:

Well alright guys and gals (I'm the ultimate musical layman and I suck @ descriptions so bear with me):

10.) Pinetop Seven - Beneath Confederate Lake

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000EOTWCO.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V56955059_.jpg

...though actually it's mostly B-Sides and unreleased material from 2005 (when the epic The Night's Bloom was released.) There are a few new songs though. Pinetop Seven blends the sounds of both American Folk and Country. They are also from Chicago, and many influences from other local artists are pretty evident here. Chi-Town rulessss

Listen to: The Western Ash, Hurry Home Dark Cloud, Beneath Confederate Lake

09.) The Blow - Paper Television

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/s-chao215/B000I2IRA0.jpg

Fun, catchy, glitchy pop album. Short and sweet as well clocking in at about half an hour. I prefer The Blow over The Microphones, but I'm not really much of a Microphones fan. Few boring tracks, but some really great ones as well. Good album.

Listen to: Parenthesis, Babay, Fists Up

08.) Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000E1158G.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

My favorite member of the NP in his latest solo release. Really fun and charming album. Bejar has a really weird-ish but great voice.

Listen to: European Oils, Your Blood, Priests Kness

07.) Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000FII31U.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V52130161_.jpg

Not as good as Sonic Nurse imo, but still a great effort by the Youth. One of
the shortest and most accessible SY albums as well.

Listen to: Incinerate, Jams Run Free, Lights Out

06.) Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000CS4L1E.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Dunno whether to label this as "alt-country" or just standard country music without all of the mainstream CMT cheesiness. Whatever it is, it's good.
Neko Case has a fiery voice and Fox Confessor is really soulful.

Listen to: Star Witness, John Saw that Number, Margaret vs Pauline

05.) Magnolia Electric Co. - Fading Trails

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000H30A28.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V59021961_.jpg

Same dreary, somber stylings of Jason Molina, but also one of his most accessible albums yet as well. "Magnolia Electric Co." by Songs Ohia was my favorite Molina project so far, but this comes pretty close.

Listen to: Don't Fade on Me, Montgomery, Lonesome Valley

04.) Fern Knight - Music for Witches and Alchemists

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/s-chao215/M4WAA_front.jpg

The latest group to emerge from Philly's "Psychadelphia" movement, but unlike the rest of them, they're actually quite good and distinguishable. Recommending this if you're into Bunyan, etc..

Listen to: Lintworme Pt 1, The Dirty South, W. memphis

03.) Girl Talk - Night Ripper

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000F9RLXA.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V59053748_.jpg

I had limited experience with mashup art prior to Girl Talk, but I loved this and I would say Night Ripper is a good way to intro yourself to the genre. Great selection of music mixed so well with one another. With Night Ripper, you don't get just a whole bunch of songs made by other people getting mashed up with one another, but unique individual tracks created by Greg Gillis in the process (ballin').

Listen to: Smash Your Head, Warm It Up, Double It Up

02.) My Latest Novel - Wolves

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000DZV6EG.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V53579997_.jpg

Loving this. Very original and powerful album. Great blend of folk and post-rock sounds and I love the tribal chants scattered throughout. I think there is only one track I can say definitely sucks, but otherwise a masterpiece.

Listen to: Learning Lego, When We Were Wolves, The Reputation of Ross Francis

01.) Joanna Newsom - Ys (Ees)

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000I2K9M4.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V37460020_.jpg

Yeah, so I bought into the hype machine. So what? It's a lovely album. Despite the extremely lengthy tracks, Joanna doesn't let up once and fails to bore you. Every individual song is it's own fairy tale. It feel's like you're carried off to a different place when listening to Ys. Just beautiful.

Listen to: Emily, Sawdust & Diamonds, Cosmia

Honorable Mentions: Pavement - Wowee Zowee: Sordid Sentinels Edition, Espers - II, Islands - Return to the Sea, Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of this Country, The Pipettes - We Are the Pipettes.

Quite serious about those last two. Fun, catchy albums.

Well, see you guys next year.

Most of the albums I got this year were from years past, and a couple of leaks that aren't officially out yet.

Two I can think of that I DID like from this year are Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death and The Mars Volta - Meccamputechture.

I am really not a fan of today's music (My favorite genre being black metal, especially the first true black metal albums), but here is a list of albums this year I enjoyed:

An Albatross - Blessphemy (Of the Peace Beast Feastgiver and the Bear Warp Kumite)
Cannibal Corpse - Kill
Cradle of Filth - Thornography
Darkthrone - The Cult is Alive
Enslaved - Ruun
Genghis Tron - Dead Mountain Mouth
Goatwhore - A Haunting Curse
Himsa - Hail Horror
Horse the Band - Pizza
I - Between Two Worlds
Into Eternity - Scattering of Ashes
Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death
Korpiklaani - Tales Along this Road
Mercenary - The Hours that Remain
Moonspell - Memorial
Rhapsody of Fire - Triumph or Agony
Sonata Arctica - For the Sake of Revenge
Strapping Young Lad - The New Black
Summoning - Oath Bound
Zao - The Fear is what Keeps us Here

My overall favorite album of the year would have to be "Kill" by Cannibal Corpse.

A disappointing year for music in my opinion.
