Dunno if this is appropriate but I'm just really curious :p

I stumbled upon this thread on another forum early this morning:
http://forums.ffonline.com/showthread.php?t=46395

My question is: has a situation like this (where bunches of people have ganged up on someone and personally insulted them for pages and pages) ever occurred on this forum? The closest thing I can think of (in my relatively few months here) is when people started making fun of Viator (if it was even that - can't remember the exacts), but that was nowhere close to the level of (not-totally-undeserved :p) ridicule the starter of the topic above has had flung at him.

Or do the staff members and Warn button prevent that from ever happening here?

I think this thread should turn into a Disco Potato insultathon.

But no, not while I've been here. I doubt the staff would let it happen.

i dunno...lots of times the staff are just happy to see people that are getting abused banned so they dont to piss off the wankers that are the real problem in the first place...they like them cuz theyre old members or somethin...

I think when everyone ganged up on lovehurts after he made a thread, which, in my opinion, was not a joke or prank, but rather a sign that he was quite unwell (likely having hallucinations), was perhaps the rudest and most ignorant moment in Eoff's history.

As is the case with most insults these days that, lovehurts was a victim of a situation which, if there was more knowledge in society on the issue, would immediately be seen as the most rude and discriminatory way someone could joke about something.

My point is that he had ADD and possibly other mental problems, so he made a thread about seeing strange people and cars outside his home, who he thought possibly had hostile intents. I know a lot about mental ilness, and it sounded to me like he was experiencing hallunications and/or paranoia. I doubt it was a joke, prank, or a plan to get banned.

Yet afterwards, it was a huge running joke on the forum. He was banned shortly after (the staff say apparently for posting porn) and ever since everyone jokes about "that crazy lovehurts."

Even Rye, who normally is quite nice on here, joked about him in her Ciddie presentation speech.

I think it was a really terrible joke, considering that lovehurts could have been very unwell at the time. In fact, people in general joke about mental illness, or the symptoms of it, way WAY too often. I have suffered from mental illness myself, and I can tell you that I become angry and highly insulted when anyone jokes about suicide, mental illnesses, mental disorders, asylum patients, you name it. It's a terrible illness and something no one should joke about.

Why is it that when a young man, say, breaks his leg, people are very sympathetic because it's a visible problem, but when someone has a breakdown or becomes depressed, suddenly it becomes a huge joke. "Oh, we better keep that kitchen knife from that crazy Fred guy, I heard he was depressed!" That kind of bullsh*t agrivates me to no end.

Most posters realized that lovehurts might have been hallucinating, but everybody laughed over it like immature pre-teens. So base!

Damn, Jowy beat me to it. lovehurts was an idiot, end of story.

But I recall that there was a certain thread created by a member called Supermillionaire that, well, was hard to take seriously. However, the thread eventually became nothing more than a place to insult this individual. Yeah, the story sucked, but meh...

It happens every once in a while, such is life. If you are not an idiot, you won't be subjected to such insults or ridicule here. Save for a few instances.

If someone is unwell and attacked me, I would defend myself, but hope that the person gets help as well. People who are insane and violent need severe intervention so that they become well. It's almost as if a part of an insane man's mind wants to be a good person, and knows he's wrong to attack someone, but in his mind he can't control himself.

So I think that people are very ignorant in taking everything for face value. If a person does something terribly wrong, isn't there a chance that that person was unwell at the time? After all, who in their right mind would say, kill their own kids, or go on a suicide rampage in a school? There must be some higher reason than just seeking violence. Most of the time these people are either mentally ill or have been driven out of their minds with a harsh life, and maybe if they'd gotten help earlier it never would have happened. But society is just not accepting enough about mental illness for that person to get the help he or she needs.

Lovehurts showed too many attention seeking tendencies far too many times for me to take him seriously by the time he made that thread.

NANNY MANUS likes to steal candy from babies, and then steal babies from their mothers. Then he eats them both, and uses the bones to build traps to catch more candy and babies.

I always do my best to avoid insulting other people, and if a thread appears in EoEO, I almost always take it seriously, even if it's at my own expense. I'd rather be thought foolish for taking someone seriously than debase a serious topic by not giving it its proper due. However, there are almost certainly times when a pattern develops and then it becomes much harder to take what someone says purely at face value afterwards. These instances have been rare, but they must be acknowledged at least.

Take care all.

It has happened here before. I always found it odd how on a forum with a likely higher-than-average population of real-life social outcasts, there are still outcasts. Outcasts among the outcasts.

I don't remember seeing it happen here, though I'm sure it has.

EDIT: Acutally, I remember one incident in EoEO where Leeza had to start handing out two week bans because someone was getting ripped by half the people who posted in his thread.

I can't remember any time that serious and outright insults were allowed. Either they're people joking around about their friends (and even then, they can get warned if they aren't careful) or else they aren't very blatant insults so much as criticism of the way they do things or something.

But no, nothing on the scale that you'd find being allowed at a lot of other large boards has ever happened at EoFF to my knowledge.

It is not really that weird, when you think about it. Sadly, I think it is that gang mentality where if one person gets away with a rude comment, the next five people all think it is ok for them to jump in. Also, if people are being bullied or feel lonely in real life, they might want to take their aggression out on the forum whipping boy/girl. There are a lot of people out there who think it is cool and brave to kick people when they are down, and they is no better way to make your community feel tight-knit than to start excluding people.

Anyway, those are just some of the reasons it might happen.
