As of now, we have just left Figaro Castle and are on our way to South Figaro.
So far I am enjoying the game quite a bit, especially after coming out of the barren wasteland of plot that is FFXII. I am really getting into the story of VI, and I really like the characters I have met so far (Terra, Locke, and a king). Going to go play more now, and I hope to find out more about the War of the Magi, and more about why Terra freaks everyone out.
I am going to try to keep this updated with my impressions, but so far things are going really good :).

Have Tina use magic in a battle while Lock and Edgar are in the party, and you'll get a pretty good picture of why she freaks everyone out.

It is really interesting to see magic be a source of fear, and I like how Locke and Edgar have to stop themselves from treating Terra like a freak.
I also like Edgar's Auto-Crossbow .

Arrived at Mobliz.
Wow...just got through a really sad part with Cyan, first him losing his family, then seeing them on the train :(.
This is my first time playing through the story, but I am familiar with the characters, so am I going to regret not building levels with Shadow while he was in the party? I plan on finishing the game with everyone, so I was just wondering if I am going to need to rely on him at some point.
Can someone explain how Gau works, in 15 words or less? I should just fight things by the river for a while now, or is it that important at this point? Also, how should I equip him, does he fight barehanded the whole game?
I have my trusty (free) gamefaqs.com walkthrough I am using, but I might need some help with some of the game mechanics here, so thanks in advance.

The Veldt contains every monster you've killed. When you use Gau's "leap" command, he'll leave the party and the battle you're in will end. Fight a few battles and he'll come back if you have fewer than four people in your party. He'll join up with you again and he'll have learned the "rages" for the mosters you were fighting when he left and when he came back. He does fight barehanded for the whole game.
Ok, a few more than 15 words, but it's not that complicated. :P

Don't worry about leveling Shadow up. The game takes into account that you don't get to spend too much time with him.

Hmm, you actually like FFVI. Maybe there IS hope for you yet, Timerk. I won't hold my breath, though.
From a character standpoint, I can't think of anything there is to dislike about FFVI. I feel the plot could be a bit more filled in, but that's nothing a good imagination can't help you out with. For the most part, level grinding is nearly a non-issue in FFVI. It gets to be when you go to the final areas of the game. Whether or not you like how the characters work, you should try to keep them even leveled, at least a little bit.
I find Gau to be very highly underrated, and Cyan probably has one of the best stories of any character in the entire series. In older days, when I played the game on my SNES when the SNES was still current... I'd always think to myself, "The writing in this game is so good that I actually care for these simple sprites. Damn." I think it illustrates how really good villains can make a story more meaningful and get you much better connected with what's going on. Terra would be half the character she is if she hadn't have been made into a living weapon for the Empire.

I mean how can you not understand exactly what he is thinking there
anyways, great story, don't worry about the veldt for now. Uhm, Gau can equip weapons later if you give him a Merit Award for a relic, which also improves his rages, so I suggest getting one and giving it to him eventually. At least, I remember that being true, I was never much of a fan of him cause I like controlling my characters rather than making them a beserker for boss fights. Another reason I didn't like Mog and Umaro in the end. Besides that Cyan is the best, Quick-Quadra Slice FTW http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy6/Party/Cyan/Cyan%20-%20Laugh.gifhttp://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy6/Party/Cyan/Cyan%20-%20Finger.gifhttp://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy6/Party/Cyan/Cyan%20-%20Laugh.gif

Don't REPLACE Sabin with Cyan, put them both in there. I mean, when I went to ZoZo, I took Edgar Sabin and Cyan, leaving a spot for Shadow, then when I did the opera and following, I took Sabin and Cyan. Best two characters! Blitz are easy. You don't have to use diagonal directions, just hit a straight direction twice! Aura bolt = down down left... way easier

Any favorite songs so far?
Yeah, I like...
Besides Terra's theme, as everyone already loves that.
Um..ok..well, I also like Edgar and Sabin's Theme, and the music in Zozo was pretty swinging. Really, it is all great though, I think I like this soundtrack better than X.
Just finished with Zozo, it was pretty cool, but I got lost doing the building jumping and wondered around for a bit. I blame the awesome decent free gamefaqs.com guide I am using. The last boss was some big muscle-bound karate guy frozen in a drop kick pose, so that was kind of odd. I loved Ramuh in IX, and I loved him here too, he should be the Yoda in every game.
I am a bit bummed because I thought I was getting Terra back, but it's fine, I still have Celes for Cure. I have Sabin back in the group, but I also sat down Edgar for Gau, which I am not feeling great about right now. I like leveling up everyone equally, and Gau is pretty good for me, but he is no Edgar. Still, I think my party will be ok, I have some good Rages for Gau that might help.
I am resting for a while, then off to the Empire to have a 'let my people go!' moment, I suppose.
I am also taking advice on how to equip my Espers, I just got Siren, Stray, Ramuh, and one other I forget the name off. A ghost explained it to me, but I wasn't paying attention because I was still agonizing over the Gau/Edgar decision.
LazarCotoron
12-20-2006, 03:13 AM
Mostly, the Espers teach you magic and give you a slight level up bonus. I don't seem to recall any of the early Espers having life shattering consequences for who gets what first, but it will definately help to get Terra and Celes hooked up with the stuff you need first. Edgar, Mog, and Setzer are your 'Jack of all trades masters of none' characters, so they can learn magic after the power mages of the group. Sabin, Cyan, Locke, Gau, Shadow, and Umaro are all pretty useless as far as mages go, so they take very low priority when it comes to Magicite.
When you get them, Gogo, Relm, and Strago are also good mage characters, and depending on how you like them they're probably interchangeable with Terra and Celes... although no one beats Terra in straight out magic power, even if Relm comes close.
Beyond that, it really falls around how you play the game and what spells you think are useful and what spells you think are total bunk.
ljkkjlcm9
12-20-2006, 05:34 AM
Sabin's blitzes are based on his Magic power, so make sure when he levels he has a Magic Power boosting esper, preferrably. And take CYAN and SABIN, sheesh... what's this edgar/gau controversy...
THE JACKEL
I always take Cyan and Gau to the Empire. Gau's rages helped when I wanted to conserve MP, and Cyan's Quadra-Slam helped for the melee encounters.
Also, one of the best parts of the game in my opinion is when you go to the Empire, so have fun. :)

Sorry it has been a while, but the first time I tried to get to Ultros, I got killed by the rats in the rafters :(...
I really liked the music in the opera scene, and also the way the incorperated it in to the story. The music was fantastic the whole way through, although it was weird to hear the mock 'voice' when I am so used to hearing actual singing in games now. I thought Setzer was cool, I can't wait to get him in the party.
Now I am going to wonder around for a bit then head to Vector...I wil check in again once I settle the issue with getting Terra back.

After you get Terra back, go to Narshe to get Mog.
That is what my gamefaqs.com says to do next, but I think I might go learn some new Rages for Gau first. It is my new favorite masochistic Final Fantasy activity.
I thought they kind of rushed the storyline bit with Maduin and Madonna, but I did like the fact you got to see everything rather than just read text. Also, I liked the mine car thing, it is a little dated, but it was still a lot of fun.
Kefka is so weird, he is basically like Biggs and Wedge at this point, but I know he is going to be the end villian...I can't wait to see how he pulls it off.
So, now that I have the airship, I am going to Gau for a little, then head over to Narshe (I guess, that place is depressing).

Hard to say. If I remember right, and it's been a while since I played FFVI, not all of the monsters can actually be found on the Veldt. Although... a handful of the bosses can be. The Hades Gigas may just be one of the ones that's not out there. At the very least, having combed the Veldt for several hours myself never turned up near all the monsters I was looking for.

I just got done with Thamalsa...I am kind of shocked it went down that way, actually. It was a really sad moment, and it just made you hate Gestahl even more than Kefka almost. The Statues just kind of got thrown in there at the last minute, but the story so far has been excellant. It is really hard to comment on the story of any game before you finish it, so I keep getting stuck making all these 'that was cool'-type comments, but it is easy to see how everything fits together. It also shows the benefits of 'showing the bad guy doing bad things before you fight him' strategy of characterization that SE sometimes gets away from.
I found all 24 people in the palace, but I missed one line with the Emperor, so I didn't get the Charm Bangle :(. There was no way I was replaying that part anymore, as it took me like 4 times to find all 24 soldiers, but I am still a sad panda.
I am disappointed with Celes so far, I wish she wasn't so passive.
Gau: I haven't got the Marshall yet, but I am going to do one or two more Veldt runs before I continue with the story. The Hades Gigas appears in Zozo, and, according to my gamefaqs guide, you can learn a cool Rage from him. I will let you know if he shows up for me. Stray Cat is ok, but I have been using a lot of Templar with Gau, and also Rhodex Snare, that is good too.
I don't think I have used Mog at all yet, I should build up some abilities for him before I continue?
Thanks for all of your input everyone .

12-23-2006, 11:52 PM
There are I believe three monsters that you need to defeat before moving on with the storyline on the Floating Continent to make them available in the Veldt (I know one of them is Grenade).
Make sure to get the Water Rondo dance for Mog, you need to fight in either the Serpent Trench or the Lete River to obtain it.
Make sure to purchase Golem and Zoneseeker at the Jidoor Auction house if you haven't already. Besides teaching useful spells, these two Espers have summon effects that will be useful throughout the entire game. Zoneseeker in particular will be especially useful from now on since enemies use increasingly more powerful spells to nucleify you with.

Yeah, I think it is impossible to get them all and still keep your sanity.
So, I did most everything you all suggested (except I kinda blew Strago off), and finished out the first part of the game. I beat Atma Weapon pretty easy (which I was surprised by), and I thought the part with Kefka taking over was pretty cool. It is so weird to see scenes that are so horrible acted out by cute little sprites, but I really felt bad for those people who fell in the cliff in that one town. I did get killed by that one mini-boss when I was running away, nobody told me he had auto-refect on (stupid gamefaqs guid ). I waited for Shadow and got him, he is actually pretty useful, but I need to teach him some magic when I get him again.
So I got to the island and killed Cid , then I went and picked up Sabin. I don't know how much I am going to enjoy this part of the game, because two of my best characters were Terra and Locke, and I don't think I am going to get them back for a while. I do have Sabin, though, and I finally figured out how to use Blitz. I have Edgar back too, so things are getting a little less magic intensive for Celes. I don't know where my next stop is (need to look at my walkthrough), but I know I am getting Cyan back soon, and that will make things even better :).
Once you get two full parties, you can get Locke back.
I usually get Terra back shortly after getting the airship, so it won't be long.

I found her in Mobliz, but she blew me off to take care of some brats :(.

Now you need to go behind the bookcase in the lower-left corner house in Mobliz. That'll start a cutscene where you'll get to fight Phunbaba again, and then she'll rejoin the party.
This is assuming you have the Falcon already, though.

Believe me, letting Cid dies gives you a better reward. The scene with Celes is incredibly powerful and really adds to her character. Saving the old man does nothing but relieve your conscience I guess...:rolleyes2

I usually do it for that reason. :P
I don't think it should even be a choice. He should just die.

I was playing on my emulator once and I had knocked a book over onto the "~" that makes it fast forward and when I got back to the computer Cid was dead, and I hadn't even left his house yet. I got him A single fish and went back in and no more Cid.
I don't think I've ever even wanted to save him since then. I'm still trying to figure out how she dodged all those rocks at the bottom.

I was intending on saving him, but I didn't realize what I was supposed to be doing until I was like halfway through. I thought he was kinda pervy, anyway.
I got most everyone back now, even though the cave Locke was in was a living hell to get through. It feels like I am at the part in the game now where I am supposed to grind up my levels and magic for a bit, so I am not all excited about that.
I took the esper over the sword.
I am very much neglecting Strago and Realm, but Sabin is totally awesome with Bum Rush. I have already beat like three of the dragons now.
I like the music better now, it got better once I got the Falcon. I feel really sorry for Setzer, it seems like he has lived a sad life.
I am now heading over to do some stuff for Strago, then the Tower of Fanataics, I guess.

You're allowed to completely neglect two characters if you get Umaro, Mog, and Gogo. :P

On one of my playthroughs of FF6, I printed a list off the internet of every monster in every area of the game, and I went through the game checking off each monster to make sure I fought them all at least once. I understand that a monster can't appear on the Veldt if you never killed it some place else.
I got Gau's list almost full. I was missing about 6 or 7 monsters. I even got the Io from Cyan's thing. And the White Dragon from Fanatics Tower. There are rumors that you can get Siegfried or Ultros or something, but I have yet to see any real evidence.
Be careful at the Tower of Fanatics. I recommend that you bring Mog and Equip him with the Moogle Charm there, as the enemies can get really tough. The monsters there are in lvl's:10,20,30,40,50,60,70,70,80, and 90. You don't want to fight the higher ones, because I'd assume you are probably less than lvl 50. They really are tough.
You could also fight the White Dragon in the Tower of Fanatics. This battle can be a little difficult because you are restricted to only magic and the White Dragon can also cast Holy about 3 times in a row.
And finally, once you take the Gem Box (that lets you cast two spells per turn), you will fight the boss, the MagiMaster. The MagiMaster has the annoying ability of WallChange, and since you are not allowed to use physical attacks, you either have to guess his weakness, or use non-elemental magic such as Flare, Meteor, and Ultima. Now, the most important thing of all is that once it's HP reaches 0, it will use Ultima as a final attack.
There are four ways to surivive this:
1. Pray that you have enough HP to survive (Good Luck)
2. Cast Life3 on a character before Ultima.
3. Use the Palidor Esper, which causes all your characters to use Jump. But you must be able to kill MagiMaster before the final Jump!
4. Rasp all it's MP. I think it's probably 50000 or so.
