How do you accept a compliment?

------------

I either say nothing or reply
"I graciously accept your compliment; A thank you."

Same here. I can't stand being complimented.

I usually say thanks, or just throw modesty out the window and respond with "I know."

I don't take compliments well at all and I end up all squirmy and blushing and generally having the aura of an idiot.

I never flat-out say "thanks" for some reason, but I do try and find a balance between accepting it and not accepting it at the same time. I don't want them to think I'm being falsely modest or fishing for more. If they think that, they will continue to compliment and make everything worse. So I have to say something that will get them to stop and not leave a bad taste in their mouth at the same time. It's all tricky business I tell you.

As you can see, a compliment for me is a large series of trauma and leaves me sucking my thumb in the corner.

I have some deep psychological issues, so I will usually go out of my way to prove the complimenter wrong.

I used to do that but I've changed me ways since the old days.

I get embarassed and thank them or kind of like what Meat Puppet said, I'll tell them thanks, but that they're wrong because I'm not pretty/nice/smart/whatever. I don't know. I like being complimented like most people do, but sometimes I just don't like it because I feel like if they think that I'm nice/pretty/smart/whatever and I don't agree, I feel like I'm almost... deceiving them, and that it'll whip back at me and they'll say "Hey, you fooled me, you're not nice/pretty/smart/whatever!" Kind of weird. :p

This is the best way to go, I promise. :D

Hmm.... good question. If I'm able to, I usually use the compliment to segue into another topic, or bounce the compliment to another person. Otherwise, I just smile and say thanks and try to change the topic. Like a lot of people here though, I don't much like compliments in my direction so I try to avoid the situation. Take that as you will. ;)

Exactly.

If i knew that a complement was going to be thrown back at me with a 'oh no, i look horrible today' etc, i wouldn't have said anything. IMO it's the best way to go.

If you totally disagree with the one who gave you the compliment, you actually insult his/her own taste.

"You look beautiful in those clothes!"
"Oh no, they're awful!"

This answer equals to: "Oh no, your taste sucks."

I usually say thanks, or thank you. But often someone will give me several compliments in a row, an once I've said thanks so many times, it starts to sound weird, an I don't want to say thanks anymore because it sounds odd. But then I think if I don't thank them, it will seem rude an ungrateful. Oh the dilemma!

But when I think about it, saying "yeah..." forever might seem odd as well. :P

It makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. I usually just stand there, red in the face, or I'll say "...thank you," very softly.

Here's an example of a recent occurrence.

Person: You did a good job tonight.
Me: Okay.
Person: Ugh, no you're supposed to say thankyou and then I'll be like your welcome.
Me: *blink* *stare* ...Okay?
Person: Ugh, no why do you have to make it weird?! You hate me! *Runs off*
Me: ...?

Or, I'll just say thanks too. The okay thing amuses me more.

Usually I'll say one of the following.

"Thanks"

"Thanks a lot"

"Thanks, I appreciate it"

"That's nice of you, thanks"

or something similar.

I always accept compliments graciously, even if they're rather misplaced or odd, because I don't want to insult someone who's trying to do something nice for me.

It depends on what the compliment is for me. If they compliment my eyes I'm so used to that I say, "Yeah I get that a lot". If it's anything else I get surprised and go," Really? Well, thanks". And sometimes the person can depend on what I say. Expecially if it's someone I like a lot.

Yeah ^^

I find it upsetting when people can't accept compliments. When I compliment people I don't want to argue with them about it. Even if you don't feel that way about yourself, I think you should just take it that another person does and say thank you. :3

Look at the person shocked, like getting a compliment is something strange. First I look around to see if the person was talking to someone else, I try to detect sarcasm. If I sense none, I try to say thank you.

Sounds simple enough, but I don't always say "Thank you."

Hmm I used to get all embarrased and just mumble stuff like "thanks but I really don't see what you see" but my confidence has increased about a million times since then and now I will generally throw modesty out the window and just go "I know, can't help being gorgeous ;) being gods gift to women is a hard job.) whilst grinning (the wink would be given) I'm cheeky to the point of rudeness but as I learnt on the tills at work when I do say stuff like that I get smiles and much better convo's with people.

I got told on boxing day that I had grown in to a very handsome young man and had done myself proud being it came from my sister-in-law's sister I was a little thrown especially when my sister-in-law's mother and father agreed with her at that point I admit I blushed and just said "umm thanks" but beyond that I was the usual me again.

I usually don't say thank you, but just carry on with the conversation, unless if the compliment is wrong, I'll refute it. The only time when I say thank you is when I'm with people that aren't my friends, like teachers or something.

I'm pretty sure I just say like "Thanks." And then it's awkward. I refuse to compliment back. I probably have before but I don't like it at all. Anyways. Some compliments I'm comfortable with and I don't have a problem, while others are a lot more difficult for me to handle.

I don't, at all.

I know I'm pretty good at "something" whatever that may be, but I totally disregard and shun any praise coming my way. I guess it's being modest, but I'm not really trying to be.

After years of weight issues and what not, I guess I just got use to hearing differently.
