It's essentially a way to find new music. You use some music player to tell last.fm what music you listen to on your computer. There are plugins for many music programs that let you do this. Then you can find other people who like the same music as you do. Or show all your friends what music you listen to. Or look at what music other people like. Or you can download a last.fm player program and it will play random music that is similar to music you like, or similar to a list of artists you tell it to search for.

I use it to track my recent musical trends on top of the finding new music functions. Plus you can share your interests and recommend favorite artists to others.

I have close to no music on my new laptop, so mine's been sitting dormant for awhile, though Pandora now scrobbles to last.fm so if I ever want to listen to music badly enough, I'll jsut do that.

Another online community.

As if we really need more.

What's so unique about Last.Fm that isn't already covered by MySpace, Livejournal, Facebook....etc?

Looked up at the site.
Users posting what they listen to and looking up at what others are listening. I think I'm very dumb because I simply don't see the point of why is it necessary to do that.

What is up with this uppity musical snobbishness all of a sudden?

Xander
01-07-2007, 02:44 PM
Umm, I don't think its really about musical snobbery for the most part >_>

It's really cool tracking what you listen to...it's interesting...it's ADDICTIVE. It's great for those stats to help you find new music to listen to, new people to talk to and to share a passion for music with. It's a way to get into more music that you might not have heard of other wise and find out about new sorts of music... I have discovered so so many bands from using that site that I can't imagine not listening to now because some of them are just so perfect.

Overall it's a pretty great community where everyone wants to share music likes, have some good discussions, and get a lot more music in their life that they wouldn't know about otherwise, and meet some fantastic people. I have probably made just as many or closer friends from LastFM than I've made on EoFF since I've been here (close friends in that we actually talk/email stay in contact very often).

What's so unique about Last.Fm that isn't already covered by MySpace, Livejournal, Facebook....etc?

Completely different purpose. Music. It's just ALL about music. It's not about photos of yourself from stupid angles and trying to stay in touch with 100 people who you don't even care about that much rather than speaking much to any of them. (my opinion of MySpace).

Livejournal is just an online journal site, to stay in contact with friends and see what people are up to, it's a completely different thing and has nothing really to do with music. So yeah you can write blogs on lastfm but you can also find blogs related to the stuff you're interested in, relevant reading and stuff, and obviously blogging is only a small part of LastFM not the complete point like with LJ. Facebook, again, don't see how this is anything like LastFM, has nothing to do with music.

I don't see LastFm as a way of keeping in touch with people you are already friends with, or just as some community type site. It's a community yeah, but as I said, it's all about music and people with a huge passion for music maybe people who like to do nothing more than sit and listen to music a lot :D The reason I like it, is it's not about how hot your photos are or how many friends you have or what you've been doing that day. It's based around a shared passion, and what better passion than music? Music is amazing, and it's become an even bigger part of my life thanks to this site.

Sorry if I raved. :D

Ps. I did know a couple of people who would just leave their winamps on all day and night playing music they didnt even listen to, to become the top fan of an artist or something, and I don't agree with that, but I think they are just ruining the purpose of the site for themselves really. It's interesting to see how your music listening does progress naturally and which bands fight their way to the top of your charts. I like addictions and this is pure addiction n__n

Also I'd rather people added me if they're going to shout me/use the site rather than add me cos of this thread and never use it. ;]

So it's like pandora except more community based?

I find dcc simpler and more effective. Although I guess it would be neat to track plays. But I just moved all my music to my macbook, so now itunes is doing that for me xD

Even still

Myspace is my music resource; I think I'd prefer Myspace music search to last.fm or I just go to www.allmusic.com, there's no personal accounts - it's just a bottomless resource of professionally published music (with sampling).

Anyways MySpace is great for music because all my friend's have their bands on there and virtually any independently ran group has a MySpace page so it makes checking out local shows a lot easier - you know what you're getting into.

Boo Last.Fm YEAH BEER

I like last.fm because I'm an OCD statistics whore. XD I want to make charts of everything I do, having a website do it for me for my music makes me happy. (Furthermore, I absolutely love X-Fire because it does the same thing for the PC games you play. XD)
