Well I'll agree with you on the sidekicks, I suppose. As much as I liked Donna, I think it works a lot better with Amy. Everything just feels smoother.

David Tennant was alright though his whole "angry doctor" thing got overplayed significantly. Matt Smith is the better doctor, in my opinion, because his emotions range further than DOCTOR SMASH. Also his sidekicks are better.

I preferred Tennant to Smith. Nothing against Matt, but I think David should have gone another season.

I would have started with the first season myself before Tennant, but only because some stuff happens later that relies on you having seen it (like Jack Harkness showing up again), but Tennant is a dreamboat so I have trouble criticizing you for your choice.
