  1. Title Screen Themes in VNs

by , 06-18-2015 at 12:46 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
I feel like doing a few writeups of particular aspects of visual novels, and how and where they were done well or not-so-well. There's a lot of subtle things that go into a visual novel experience, and I appreciate the attention to detail on some accounts. This is one of those little things that can truly make a big difference.

In many ways a good title screen theme is important. It's the single theme you keep coming back to - the one you hear every time you open up the game - and ...

  2. VNs in the Steam Summer Sale!

by , 06-14-2015 at 11:24 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Figured I might as well make this little list for anyone interested in taking advantage of the current Summer Sale to grab a couple of games.

planetarian ~the reverie of a little planet~ is 50% off, putting it at € 4,99. Being made by the same company who also made CLANNAD and Little Busters!, naturally, I can only recommend it. It's only three hours long and thus definitely one of the best 'short' (<5h) visual novels I've ever read. Especially if you like Key, or you're interested ...
  3. AIR: Why the Key community is amaaaazing

Even if you haven't read AIR, this is just wonderful.

  4. Cross†Channel First Impressions

by , 05-29-2015 at 12:09 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Well... I've never felt this in the dark about how a visual novel might turn out.

At first glance Cross†Channel takes place in a typical highschool setting. Immediatly the protagonist, Taichi Kurosu, turns out to be one of the most annoying characters I've seen in a while because he spends every scene sexually harassing one of the girls. No, seriously, I can't think of a single scene involving a female character where ...
  5. AIR Air Arc Thoughts

by , 05-26-2015 at 09:20 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
About time I posted this. Between university, Higurashi and Cross Channel I forgot about it for some time, but the bookclub still has me coming back to it every so often.

So Air is AIR's final arc. The arc's name is actually also capitalized, but to make a distiction I'll take the liberty to change that. They really couldn't have picked a more confusing name, could they?

  6. Virtue's Last Reward True End Impressions

by , 05-18-2015 at 04:32 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Gotta say, I enjoyed Virtue's Last Reward quite a bit more than 999. Right up until "END or BEGINNING", everything was pretty amazing.

This post contains spoilers for the entirety of the Zero Escape series (999 and Virtue's Last Reward). If you have not read it, beware.

    (SPOILER)

The Zero Escape series seems to have this strange habit of having its ultimate reveals be extremely similar to (SPOILER)Ever17. I mean obviously, given their relationship, but still it was

  7. Higurashi When They Cry - Chapter 1 released on Steam!

by , 05-16-2015 at 12:21 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Chapter 1 (Onikakushi) of Higurashi is available on Steam now.

I'll probably take the opportunity to start a reread.
  8. Angel Beats!-1st Beat- Demo Released Online

by , 05-15-2015 at 02:43 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
So Angel Beats!-1st Beat- is supposed to come out on June 26th, though it was originally supposed to come out today, so to make up for that Key put up a free online demo of the game! Of course it's all in Japanese, but if you're interested regardless, you can get it here: http://key.visualarts.gr.jp/angelbeats/download.html

For those that don't know, Angel Beats! is set in an afterlife world where young adults with lingering ...
  9. Virtue's Last Reward First Impressions

by , 05-12-2015 at 08:00 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Doesn't bode well when you get stuck for an hour during the first two-and-a-half hours of gameplay xD

So Virtue's Last Reward has a premise similar to 999's. Nine people, locked away, forced to play the Nonary Game if they wish to survive. However this time around the game works a little differently, mainly with the addition of the AB and CD.

Instead of opening numbered doors with a fitting digital root, all the bracelets this time around show a '3' at the beginning, and ...
  10. 999 True End Impressions

by , 05-11-2015 at 08:59 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Okay, so I just finished up 999 and, uh, I don't even know what to say. I wish I could be all positive about it, but there's something that really, really bothers me.

This post contains spoilers for all of 999 (Zero Escape: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors). If you have not read it, beware.

Alright so since my last post was after I'd only gotten one ending, I guess I'll start by giving my overall impressions on the rest of the game leading up to the conclusion. There were good ...
