Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels

I blog about visual novels as I read them.

    Me twenty minutes ago:

  2. Muv-Luv Alternative Review

by , 07-04-2015 at 11:14 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
This review will contain some spoilers for the general setting and plot of Muv-Luv Unlimited. If you wish to be completely unspoiled regarding the Muv-Luv series, stay clear of this review.

Muv-Luv Alternative is a visual novel created by âge, the sequel to the original Muv-Luv. As of writing this review, it is the #1 most popular visual novel on VNDB, and it's up there as one of the darkest stories ever told in visual novels.

  3. Zero Escape 3 scheduled for a Summer 2016 Release

Felt like this was worth mentioning since I know quite a few people round these forums like this series. I enjoyed the Zero Escape games quite a lot, especially Virtue's Last Reward, but the lack of closure really hurts. But it seems that problem will forever resolve itself in one year's time~

Though I hope it's not as reminiscent of Kotaro Uchikoshi's other ...

  4. Muv-Luv is getting an official localization

by , 06-30-2015 at 12:03 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)

So this is a thing. People called âge localizations an impossibility, but Degica did it. They're gonna be kickstarting it which you can probably blame on Sekai Project's successes in doing just that, but I have no doubts it'll meet its goal. In fact, I'll certainly be pledging towards it, since while I do overall think Muv-Luv is more popular than it needs to be it's still a damn good story overall.

    The formal announcement isn't ...

What happens when a visual novel with a great story gives you a bonus extra ending as a reward for 100% completion?

    Well...

  6. Title Screen Themes in VNs

by , 06-18-2015 at 12:46 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
I feel like doing a few writeups of particular aspects of visual novels, and how and where they were done well or not-so-well. There's a lot of subtle things that go into a visual novel experience, and I appreciate the attention to detail on some accounts. This is one of those little things that can truly make a big difference.

In many ways a good title screen theme is important. It's the single theme you keep coming back to - the one you hear every time you open up the game - and ...

  7. VNs in the Steam Summer Sale!

by , 06-14-2015 at 11:24 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Figured I might as well make this little list for anyone interested in taking advantage of the current Summer Sale to grab a couple of games.

planetarian ~the reverie of a little planet~ is 50% off, putting it at € 4,99. Being made by the same company who also made CLANNAD and Little Busters!, naturally, I can only recommend it. It's only three hours long and thus definitely one of the best 'short' (<5h) visual novels I've ever read. Especially if you like Key, or you're interested ...
  8. AIR: Why the Key community is amaaaazing

Even if you haven't read AIR, this is just wonderful.

  9. Cross†Channel First Impressions

by , 05-29-2015 at 12:09 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Well... I've never felt this in the dark about how a visual novel might turn out.

At first glance Cross†Channel takes place in a typical highschool setting. Immediatly the protagonist, Taichi Kurosu, turns out to be one of the most annoying characters I've seen in a while because he spends every scene sexually harassing one of the girls. No, seriously, I can't think of a single scene involving a female character where ...
  10. AIR Air Arc Thoughts

by , 05-26-2015 at 09:20 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
About time I posted this. Between university, Higurashi and Cross Channel I forgot about it for some time, but the bookclub still has me coming back to it every so often.

So Air is AIR's final arc. The arc's name is actually also capitalized, but to make a distiction I'll take the liberty to change that. They really couldn't have picked a more confusing name, could they?
