Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels

I blog about visual novels as I read them.

  1. Comparing the sci-fi escape genre games

by , 02-09-2017 at 04:51 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Referring to Zero Escape, Root Double and Ever17, three games / series that share a quite similar premise and execute it in quite different ways. The shared premise being basically as follows: a group of characters finds themselves locked in a very dangerous situation cut off from the outside world, and if they don't get out fast they all die. The games are all set in the not too distant future, with science being a little more advanced than in our world. And finally, all the games have some very ...

  2. 999 and VLR are coming to Steam on March 24th

by , 02-01-2017 at 01:05 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)

    Steam Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/477740/

So yeah, after what feels like an eternity since ZTD's PC release, the first two parts of the Zero Escape trilogy are finally catching up and getting PC releases of their own. Or at least together as a bundle.

999 has been revamped and features voice acting and I believe also the new (bad) ending that came in the iOS version? ...
  3. Zero Time Dilemma News

by , 03-17-2016 at 06:38 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
So I was thinking of making a special for my #100th blog post, but I was letting news pass me by like crazy while trying to come up with good ideas. So screw it, this is something that needs to get posted.

If any of you are Zero Escape fans you might already know this, but Zero Time Dilemma, the third and final entry in the series, has finally gotten a release window, a trailer, and information regarding what the game will be like.

    Players ...

  4. Root Double Kickstarter

by , 01-07-2016 at 08:20 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
I felt like fans of the Infinity or Zero Escape series might be interested in this.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...-xtend-edition

Conceptually it's very reminiscent of those two series (not to mention Nakazawa being the director again) except that instead of 'just' being an escape story, it's more of a rescue story this time. But apparently you get to view it unfold both from the outside as well as from the inside. Sounds ...
  5. Zero Escape 3 scheduled for a Summer 2016 Release

Felt like this was worth mentioning since I know quite a few people round these forums like this series. I enjoyed the Zero Escape games quite a lot, especially Virtue's Last Reward, but the lack of closure really hurts. But it seems that problem will forever resolve itself in one year's time~

Though I hope it's not as reminiscent of Kotaro Uchikoshi's other ...

  6. Virtue's Last Reward True End Impressions

by , 05-18-2015 at 04:32 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Gotta say, I enjoyed Virtue's Last Reward quite a bit more than 999. Right up until "END or BEGINNING", everything was pretty amazing.

This post contains spoilers for the entirety of the Zero Escape series (999 and Virtue's Last Reward). If you have not read it, beware.

    (SPOILER)

The Zero Escape series seems to have this strange habit of having its ultimate reveals be extremely similar to (SPOILER)Ever17. I mean obviously, given their relationship, but still it was

  7. Virtue's Last Reward First Impressions

by , 05-12-2015 at 08:00 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Doesn't bode well when you get stuck for an hour during the first two-and-a-half hours of gameplay xD

So Virtue's Last Reward has a premise similar to 999's. Nine people, locked away, forced to play the Nonary Game if they wish to survive. However this time around the game works a little differently, mainly with the addition of the AB and CD.

Instead of opening numbered doors with a fitting digital root, all the bracelets this time around show a '3' at the beginning, and ...
  8. 999 True End Impressions

by , 05-11-2015 at 08:59 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Okay, so I just finished up 999 and, uh, I don't even know what to say. I wish I could be all positive about it, but there's something that really, really bothers me.

This post contains spoilers for all of 999 (Zero Escape: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors). If you have not read it, beware.

Alright so since my last post was after I'd only gotten one ending, I guess I'll start by giving my overall impressions on the rest of the game leading up to the conclusion. There were good ...

  9. 999 First Ending - Speculation Time!

by , 05-08-2015 at 07:01 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
So I just got my first ending in 999. What happened was (SPOILER)Clover went a little mad and killed Santa, Seven, June and then Junpei with an axe. Oh joy.

I won't tag spoilers from here on.

I definitely enjoy the way this game is shaping up, because it feels as if the big mystery of the game - "Who is Zero?" - is a genuine mystery you can reason out before it's revealed to you. In other words, a fair challenge to the reader. And so, to let the veterans enjoy watching ...
  10. 999 First Impressions

by , 05-06-2015 at 04:52 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Well I've reached the first actual choice so I thought it might be a good time to give first impressions.

Sorry about this being the only screenshot, I fear running into spoilers if I look for anything else.

    First things first.

OH MY GOD THAT TEXT SPEED IS SO SLOW IT'S KILLING ME.

*Ahem* Sorry. I haven't read a visual novel that didn't just skip the text-appearing-animation if you click ...
