Shlup has a point. I've had professors tell me I'll need the book, and that they will teach from it. Then they don't do anything like that. Used books are your best bet.

If you're paying money for lessons, they ARE going to teach you how to use a manual transmission right?

I guess it depends on how much it costs. I rarely used any of my textbooks. Professors are required to require that you guy grossly overpriced reading materials, whether you'll actually need it or not.

I understand your point ShulpQuack, but considering that said students also couldn't even be bothered to go get the requested manuel, it tells me they are not all that invested. I could be wrong though.

Sharky, she had better not be. And it was extremelly difficult to get someone to agree to teach me. I almost cried tears of joy when someone said yes because I thought I was going to have to dish out more money for additional lessons.
Why don't you move here and teach me how to drive??

You'll have picked up proper braking technique soon enough. I can't believe no one wants to teach you how to drive. I love doing that stuff. Of course I love to drive.

Good luck with the (permanent) house guests.

I always brought my GameBoy or laptop or something to class. It doesn't mean you're not learning anything, it just means your main source of learning isn't the lecture. I'm an independent learner--once the teacher gives me a study guide, I'll go off and study on my own. But if I'm trying to listen to the lecture, my mind will start to wander, so I keep myself half-busy by playing Tetris or something.

Some people aren't interested in learning the material, sure, but sometimes it's just a different learning style.

Breaking smoothly is hard to get used to. You'll get it.

While it may be a bit of a pain going in so early and getting out of class early, try to enjoy it while it lasts. I seem to recall the first week is usually pretty lax since most people can't quite sit for very long coming straight out of summer, and you have all of the usual orientation stuff going on.

On the plus side, once things pick up, the extra 2-4 hours you're there can be put to good use getting a bunch of homework and assignments or studying done. It's a lot easier to focus on that stuff I find when you're on campus and know you can't really leave since you have a classes coming up a few hours later.

usually acceuil means welcome, but I would agree with orientation for this usage.

What you describe as "acceuil" sounds like the kind of thing that goes on at new student orientations. So maybe "orientation" was the word you were looking for? Though around here that tends to be a day-long affair rather than an hour.

haha Shlup, thats a nice one xD (trash car on his parking space etc).

I really don't know why you put up with any of that. Jersey Shore?? No.

My roommate (husband's cousin) is a pretty solid slob. His one chore is to bring the trash cans in, but he usually doesn't, so I put them in his parking spot. Anything he leaves out in the kitchen for more than three days gets put in a weird place.

It's your place. Talk to your boyfriend first since it's his family. Voice your concerns and see how he feels. Either way, she's no longer a guest. She's family you're doing a favor for. You shouldn't treat her like dirt obviously.

Still if someone isn't going to have things exactly the way they want it shouldn't be her. She's in your house depending on the two of you, so most of the time it should be her watching what you want. She should show her appreciation by doing the laundry, etc. Opposite of a good host, there's supposed to be a good guest.
