I think the console wars were actually a lot more grusome back then where consoles actually had mascots. I vaguely remember seeing fan art of Sonic decapitating Mario and Mario having Sonic in a hamster wheel etc. Nowadays it's just people trash talking each other on the internet, maybe that's progress. I dunno.
Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Road Rash 2, Fatal Fury 2, X-Men 2, I played so many 2s on the Genesis it's not even funny.
Sonic 2 is my favorite of the series, probably.
Afraid not. Only Sonic game I played on the Genesis was 2. At least I think it was 2. My memory is fuzzy on the whole thing. All I remember is playing as Sonic with Tails behind me and the screen was expanded a bit compared to the re-release I have on the Xbox 360. I remember watching somewhere that they zoomed in the screen on the re-releases of the games, which would explain why I keep running into things so much. Every time I gain momentum I can't see an enemy until it's too late.
Both are great! I do enjoy Sonic more just for the memories attached to it, but both are of course solid games. Did you ever play the first Sonic for the Master System (or Game Gear, since I believe they were practically)? It's kind of weird to think that it came out after the Genesis Sonic.
Nice. Your story also reminded me that I was fortunate enough to be an only child for 10 years of my life and THEN the older brother (in terms of video game time/advantages). Also, man. Catch up on that SNES. I still consider it the best console of all time. I could go on for days and days on how much I love that system. I liked games before on the NES and ancient PCs. Also, I thought the Genesis was nice and like most, the original Sonic really sold the concept of a console without the big N's name attached to it. But man, the SNES was like an awaking for me as a kid. I was seriously stressed out that I didn't have one. It was nuts. I know most of those type of feelings had to do with being a child, but even considering that I don't think I will ever feel the same about hardware like that ever again. Uh, sorry to get an internet boner there. But, man.
I'm glad I was oblivious to the console wars going on at the time. In my early years I was at the whim of whatever my brother bought. Went from the NES, to the Sega Genesis, to the Saturn, PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast before owning my own systems. It's a shame I never got to have a SNES growing up so I missed out on a lot of great exclusives, but I got to play some of them while over at my cousins who has every Nintendo known to man. I never had much of a preference over systems. As a kid I wanted both Nintendo and PlayStation systems and I eventually got them. Ended up buying a 360 because it was cheaper than the PS3 at the time and despite my reluctance to try Xbox (heard a lot of bad press back then) I came to love it.
Yeah, I also had the attitude when I was younger that both series were very fun and satisfying games. While my parent's weren't super rich or anything, I am still fortunate enough to have them get me both the SNES and Genesis back in the day. Though I didn't actually get my Genesis till around the time Sonic 2 came out (played Sega games at a friend's house across the street beforehand). Anyway, yeah, I know this wasn't exactly the point of your review, but it's annoying how so few people see that there are advantages/disadvantages to ALL consoles, even to this day. We aren't electing a President. We are playing video games. See what's out there and enjoy yourself!
I regret nothing!
I agree, I like them both. And damn you for the Miley Cirus reference.
Ohh. Okay. Yeah, I always did the crawling thing to avoid the objects too.
I didn't do the secondary way (SPOILER) with shooting the busts in the corner of the room or whatever they are , I know that. I discovered that one on my third or fourth playthrough just to see how many different ways there were to beat him. You can actually shoot him and do damage without switching controller ports or anything, it's just hard to do and takes forever. You can avoid a lot of his attacks by crawling on the ground as well, if I remember right. I could just be remembering wrong though. That was about 15 years ago.

It was common for me to just take half a day to do a speedrun of the game just because I was obsessed and got way too good at it. If I remember what I read properly you're supposed to shoot at something on Mantis' body, but it's usually only works when you flat out refuse to do it the way the game intended and die. Or it could have just been because you were on the boss fight for so long the game decided to trigger the secondary way to beat him.

Oh cool! Though if I were you I'd recommend trying to emulate it on your PC. Unfortunately the Gamecube version was a very bad port that has a habbit of freezing and crashing regularly which becomes a huge frustration given the unique save mechanic that game has and really tars the overall experience. Or if you have a Wii I think the one on the virtual console on that is a better port too. But if you don't have a Wii I'd recommend an N64 emulator and the ROM.

Majora's Mask has a unique presentation as far as Zelda games go and a darker theme that I can appreciate. And who can forget that moon!? Also, if I'm remembering right the antagonist in that game wasn't straight up evil and just the victim of the mask he was wearing. I need to review that game some time. I have it on the Collector's Edition for the Nintendo Gamecube since I never did get an expansion pack in order to play it on my Nintendo 64.
A nice analysis. It's definitely one of the more refined Zelda games but Majora's Mask is till my favourite.
Be prepared for awesomeness then.
