  1. My Current VN Tier List

by , 03-22-2017 at 12:02 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
I thought about making another Top 10 list with VNs I've read or changed opinion on since my last one, but I don't think it would be particularly representative. So hey, why not make a ranking of literally *all* VNs I've ever read? Sounds like fun!

That being said, some of these novels are way too close to one another and hard to differentiate in how I feel about them. So I'm going to be doing this in tiers. I'll still try to sort the VNs in each individual tier from worst to best, ...

  2. A Journey of Seagulls - Episode 1

by , 03-02-2017 at 01:13 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
This is going to be a series of posts forming a commentary on the journey of reading Umineko. While I may talk about themes more relevant to Umineko on a greater scale, I intend to keep this series spoiler-free beyond the episode I'm talking about, so you're completely safe to read this if you've read up to the episode in the title yourself.

Starting with Episode 1: And Then There Were No Seagulls, or something along those lines. At least until it's not anymore.

Umineko OST - Ride on ...

  3. Comparing the sci-fi escape genre games

by , 02-09-2017 at 04:51 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Referring to Zero Escape, Root Double and Ever17, three games / series that share a quite similar premise and execute it in quite different ways. The shared premise being basically as follows: a group of characters finds themselves locked in a very dangerous situation cut off from the outside world, and if they don't get out fast they all die. The games are all set in the not too distant future, with science being a little more advanced than in our world. And finally, all the games have some very ...

  4. Match the VN - Depressing Edition

by , 01-19-2017 at 02:29 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
You know, I recently went back over some of the plots of my favorite visual novels and, uh, with a lot of them if you think about the situation too much it starts getting really depressing.

So for "fun" I felt like summing up their situations in a sentence or two and decided to make a little game: match the VN to the horribly depressing situation! Naturally some of these are pretty big spoilers so I've put the list of represented VNs in a spoiler tag at the bottom. You shouldn't ...

  5. A Rant on Eroge

by , 06-06-2016 at 12:56 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Oh boy, let's make a blog post about this because what could possibly go wrong...

There's an aspect of visual novels I've always just mostly ignored and glossed over in my year and a half of blogging on here. It's something I always fear of touching upon since I don't want people to look at me like I'm a weirdo. But then again I feel like it's something I should address at some point. And that is the rather close relationship between visual novels and erotic content.

  6. OOC Monologue

by , 01-05-2016 at 05:13 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Something sweet and motivating to start off the new year with.

(I think I've obscured it enough so as to not spoil where it's from, but if you recognize the style early on and you haven't completed this VN yet, proceed with caution.)

  7. Looking back on 2015

by , 01-02-2016 at 01:56 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Wow, hard to believe it's already been a year. Across the entirety of 2015 I've made 90 whole blog posts. That's a post every four days! Let me take a look at how far I've come since starting this thing...

I've read 23 new visual novels, 18 of which I've reviewed.

Adding up all the approximate lengths I'm left presuming I spent about 650 hours on it. Not counting rereads of visual novels I had already read prior to this year.

By far my most active reading ...
  8. Censoring and Visual Novels

by , 12-18-2015 at 01:51 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Seems like censoring in games has become quite a controversial issue recently. I mostly see people vehemently claiming that censoring is bad practice and should not be a thing. And I gotta be honest, I feel it's not quite that simple.

This article is a bit old, being from mid-2013, but this has been an issue in the visual novel localizing scene for years now and it STILL ...
  9. Umineko Ramblings - Solvability Per Episode

by , 10-05-2015 at 01:15 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
It's the Rokkenjima Incident's anniversary today, so I felt like making some sort of post about Umineko at least. So this is what I came up with. Time to enjoy being extremely vague! At least I believe I did well to avoid notable spoilers in this post.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni is a mystery story. A story with truths hidden beneath its surface which it wants its readers to figure out on their own. But how likely is it really that the attentive reader will actually figure out everything ...
  10. Title Screen Themes in VNs

by , 06-18-2015 at 12:46 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
I feel like doing a few writeups of particular aspects of visual novels, and how and where they were done well or not-so-well. There's a lot of subtle things that go into a visual novel experience, and I appreciate the attention to detail on some accounts. This is one of those little things that can truly make a big difference.

In many ways a good title screen theme is important. It's the single theme you keep coming back to - the one you hear every time you open up the game - and ...
