  1. ToraTravels: Beijing - Shanghai. A Dirty Floor is Also a Bed

Shanghai is the first civilized city I've seen in this country, and probably the only one. If 'civilization' means eating brand-name crap at overpriced stores in the company of twenty-three million people in the largest city in the world.

    Shanghai baby!

It took me a while to get there. First stop from Beijing was mount Wutai. My train departs on the night of october 1st, the founding day of the People's Republic and a national holiday. ...
  2. Chickens in bags, group drinking and no chocolate anywhere in sight

From the first moment I set foot in the capital of this glorious People's Republic, one thought dominated my mindscape: Beijing is a giant Chinese restaurant. The most prevailing smell after smelling exhaust fumes waste is most likely to be soy sauce.

Three weeks in China now, I've been spending most of my time in a town a hundred kilometers further to the north. About 350,000 live here, which is about one residential block in BJ.

  3. Status update: Meow-meow confirmed alive!

Seems like we all got carried away by cultural stereotypes. The little Chinese kitty was spotted alive and kicking in the Chinese restaurant I saw him getting carried into last week. They even have an older cat walking around the place, so I guess they don't eat cats there.

    At least for now.
  4. Musings on my last night in Russia

What's it like to be a fattie who doesn't give a smurf and eats whatever he wants? I've had that thought running through my head for a while. Maybe because this whole country has a general atmosphere of nobody giving a smurf.

A bag of red kaviar flavored chips. It's not nearly as good as it sounds.

Two greasy kebabs, a double burger (a great $6 one, though), a troutload of snickers, chips, a bag of chocolate candies, beans, ...
  5. Another one bites the dust.

And another one down, another one down, another one bites the dust.

Today, I ruptured my posterior cruciate ligament. Again. And the best part? I was WALKING. Walking in a line. Not turning, not twisting, not running, not juking, not getting tackled, not ice skating, not cycling, not falling, not jumping... I was walking. Walking in a line.

This is the seventh time I've blown out my right knee; the fourth time the PCL has been affected. The first time I shredded ...

  6. Welcome to the snacks/skt show!

So let's begin where we left off eh?

Last we left our hero he was in a harrowing situation with 4th down and no time outs left, it was looking bad for the kid, it looked like the end. So let's see how he's doing now.

<interviewer> Hi skt can you tell me how it's going?

<skt> I didn't sign up for this smurf mothersmurf smurf smurf *turns camera away*

  7. :(

So, my first (legit) ex-girlfriend found out a couple days ago that she has HPV, and it's probably the cancerous kind, and I'm crying about it.

This is one of the sweetest girls I've ever known, and something so troutty couldn't have happened to someone less deserving of it. She'll probably need half of her cervix amputated, and now she may not have an opportunity to be a mommy in the future.

I don't even know how to really react to this. I can absolutely support her in ...

  8. doop doop

A lot of things are getting to me lately, and in some cases a little more than I care to admit publically. Some things are making me paranoid, and almost everything is making me stressed out. I suppose I'll make a vague attempt at listing them off and going through each thing one by one. This is a venting, people. I don't need help or anything, I just like the weird little idea in my head that someone out there is aware of my thoughts.

Firstly, my job might be gone in October. ...

  9. More baby news.

    It's a girl!

We think. The doctor said he was 90% sure. Normally I'd like those odds, but for a split second I thought I saw a little something extra in between those legs, and then he shifted the wand thing and it was gone. I think he's in cahoots with the woman.

90% is a lot of %, but even so, I think I'll wait until the next ultrasound confirms it before I start picking out outfits and junk. In about eight weeks we get to see a 3D ultrasound, and ...

  10. Dreaming (copy pasted from dream thread)

I dreamt that Del and I were sitting at a bench eating lunch, and strangers kept coming up to us and asking for him to sign their copies of his bestselling memoir, and asking where his wife was. Then they would turn to me and ask me why I didn't have a real job or an education, and then Del kept telling them that it was because I kept asking people for handouts.
