  1. A Modern Guide to Ys - Ys I Chronicles

by , 12-29-2019 at 10:34 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)

    YS I CHRONICLES

Ys I is a game that has seen numerous releases and rereleases across many different platforms. But the most accessible modern day version is the "Ys I & II Chronicles" release for the PC. It's up on Steam, it's up on GOG, and it's pretty cheap nowadays.

The original Ys dates back to 1987, and the Chronicles version is less a full remake ...

  2. Just beat Final Fantasy V

Caution! Potential spoilers ahead if you have not played through Final Fantasy V yet.

    Woo!

I have just beat Final Fantasy V at 39 hours on 12-2-2019! There were some frustrating battles but I found that mastering the jobs made it easier. It seems like this game is more about the combinations of jobs you pick and what skills you mastered. It really reminded me a little bit of Final Fantasy VII except instead of materia, you get jobs and job skills. I wasn't able to max out ...

  3. Finally beat Fantasy IV

    Good news everyone!

I finally beat Final Fantasy IV. After about 20+ hours of frustration, I finally caved in and looked up guides on the augment mechanics and that helped immensely. Despite my frustrations, I think I've come to appreciate the remake's new mechanics that doesn't let you power level to beat bosses. Here are my take aways from Final Fantasy IV (remake):
    • I got a kick out of the impact status effect spells
    • Having to actually watch the patterns of boss fights
    ...

  4. Final Fantasy IV

Today's session was the roughest by far during my journey through all the Final Fantasy titles. This next bit might contain some spoilers.

Okay, my troubles began when fighting Golbez in Underworld. At first, I had no idea why some attacks were healing him while others were damage him. Once I figured that out, I had a hard time keeping enough MP on Rydia to keep summoning Eidolons to do real damage against him. While his attacks weren't super crazy, they were enough to keep my party

  5. FF4 Update

    Another quick update:

I've successfully beat FF3 and now am playing FF4.

Story-wise, I feel FF4 is more put together, and the story paces pretty quick. I don't want to reveal any spoilers (I doubt anyone here hasn't played the game but better safe than sorry). Unfortunately, I have to play the 3D versions on Steam since I am trying to stream the process. I probably could find another way but I found them to be less than ideal. I'm not a big fan of the 3D version at all. ...

  6. Just a small update

Decided to tackle all the Final Fantasy main series and maybe some of the spin-offs. I've beaten FF1, FF2, FF7, FF7: Crisis Core, and am now working my way through FF3.

The plan is to play FF1-FF15 (excluding the MMO versions), plus spin-offs, and write down my thoughts on each title. Since I've already started I'll leave a few quick comments for FF1 & FF2.

FF1 - Once I got used to the game, it wasn't so bad. I think my final team ended up being Knight, Ninja, Black ...

So in my last blog, I talked about the black sheep numbered entry of the Suikoden franchise, Suikoden IV. Today, we're going to look at Rhapsodia, better known as Suikoden Tactics in the West. Tactics is a gaiden title that serves as both prequel/sequel side story to Suikoden IV. What makes it really standout is that the game is no longer a turn-based RPG about collecting 108 heroes, but instead a Tactical Turn Based RPG a la Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire ...

I feel I have a theme going here. Like the BoF1 entry, anyone who took a quick glance of my list will know I'm a pretty big Suikoden fan, you'll also notice I snubbed one of the main entries and most of the spin-off/gaiden games. I'll say right now, that I have to actually play Suikogaiden due to lacking the proper emulator, which is why ...

  9. My Top 100's Lost but Not Forgotten: Breath of Fire

Blah blah blah, made a list, blah blah blah, this is for games that didn't make it.

Anyone who simply glances over my list will notice I have a strong affiliation with Capcom's classic and underrated RPG series Breath of Fire. They will also notice I left one entry out of the list, and while my BoFII entry hints as to some of the reasons, I figured I would lay it out here ...
