  1. A Journey of Seagulls - Episode 1

by , 03-02-2017 at 01:13 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
This is going to be a series of posts forming a commentary on the journey of reading Umineko. While I may talk about themes more relevant to Umineko on a greater scale, I intend to keep this series spoiler-free beyond the episode I'm talking about, so you're completely safe to read this if you've read up to the episode in the title yourself.

Starting with Episode 1: And Then There Were No Seagulls, or something along those lines. At least until it's not anymore.

In all seriousness I would like Karifean's answer. There was a thread a few months ago where both he and Ultima Shadow praised it as a fantastic experience and so I was curious and looked it up on Steam but didn't quite get it - are there others in the series you need to experience first, or? I saw someone had done a LP on YouTube and thought about watching it wasn't sure if it was the right thing.
It seems that across the several different rants ...
  3. 2016 was an awesome year

by , 12-31-2016 at 12:17 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
So today has been a pretty meh day. As is usual on the last day of a university deadline. But having it be one day before the final day of the year is just in bad taste. Since I was in a group with my brother on this assignment, we were in his apartment together, working, from 2 PM to midnight straight. It was a pretty taxing time for the both of us, not to mention my brother's wife who took on the task of attending to their three children in the meantime.

Of course all that was sliiiiightly ...
  4. Umineko no Naku Koro ni (Arcs 1-4 / first half) is out on Steam!

by , 07-08-2016 at 11:26 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
As of right now, Umineko no Naku Koro ni, known in English as Umineko When They Cry, has been officially released on Steam! Chiru is not included yet, so this is just the first half of the entire story. And I know what you're thinking. "Why would I pick up an incomplete story?" Fret not, there are still good reasons to pick it up and read it now, and because Umineko is the best, I'll relay those reasons to you now.

Just to quickly recap for those who don't know: Umineko no Naku Koro ni ...

(The preview pictures contain spoilers, especially the last 3)

So it seems MangaGamer has decided on releasing Umineko four arcs at a time, with the question arcs being released on July 9th!

The pachislot art will take some getting used to for me (look at those eyes), but chances are the UmiTweak patch - meaning PS3 art ...

  6. Character Appreciation: Dlanor A. Knox

by , 04-06-2016 at 02:58 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
I tried coming up with an Umineko character I could write a post like this about without spoiling anything. I failed; it's just not really possible. But I'll still try to be vague enough not to take anything major away.

    Umineko OST - JUSTICE

Dlanor A. Knox is an antagonist in Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru. She's first introduced in Episode 5: End of the Golden Witch as the subordinate of Erika, who introduces ...
  7. Umineko Ramblings - Solvability Per Episode

by , 10-05-2015 at 01:15 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
It's the Rokkenjima Incident's anniversary today, so I felt like making some sort of post about Umineko at least. So this is what I came up with. Time to enjoy being extremely vague! At least I believe I did well to avoid notable spoilers in this post.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni is a mystery story. A story with truths hidden beneath its surface which it wants its readers to figure out on their own. But how likely is it really that the attentive reader will actually figure out everything ...
  8. Yay!

by , 07-15-2015 at 03:01 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)

    From left to right:
    • Higurashi Hou Collection (Episode 1-9 + Bonus Material)
    • Umineko Episode 1-4
    • Umineko Episode 5-8 (Chiru)
    • Umineko Tsubasa (Fandisc)
    • Ougon Musou Kyoku
    • Ougon Musou Kyoku CROSS
    • OMK Extra Disc

Gotta say, it's immensely satisfying to own a hard copy of your favorite visual novel. Plus Ougon Musou Kyoku (CROSS) and the Higurashi Hou collection on top of that.

Front view: (Uh... Slight Umineko Episode 1 spoilers I suppose)

  9. Umineko: A Reflection on Episode 8

by , 04-27-2015 at 03:00 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
This post contains heavy spoilers for the eighth episode of Umineko no Naku Koro ni. If you have not read Umineko, beware.

    (SPOILER)

Most people who have read Twilight of the Golden Witch probably aren't surprised at this, but it's my least favorite of the Umineko episodes. For the simple reason that most of the main plot has already ended by that point; Battler and Beatrice's game was resolved back in Episode 6, and Episode 7 tied up pretty much all the loose ends of the mystery
