  1. AIR - Kazamatsuri.org Bookclub Readalong

by , 02-10-2015 at 06:18 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
So Kazamatsuri.org, a Key community site I frequent, is having a bookclub on Key's second visual novel: AIR. As I have not read AIR, and also because this bookclub sounds pretty fun, I will be reading along.

So here's how this'll work. Over two weeks the participants will read through a particular route in AIR and discuss it, and at the end of said two weeks there will also be a podcast about the route in question. There ...
  2. Ever17 -The Out of Infinity- Review

by , 02-09-2015 at 09:01 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Ever17 -The Out of Infinity- is a visual novel developed by KID, and localized in English by Hirameki International. A prime example of a story that simply could not, would not work properly in any other medium.

One of the few openings I've always watched every time I started up the game.

    Overview

The story of Ever17 follows six characters as they are trapped in the underwater theme park "LeMU", being left behind as it was ...
  3. The Big Week

Boy from Kansas coming through. Follow the yellow brick road! Follow the yellow brick road! Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow the yellow brick road! We're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz!

What's up EoFF? We did it, IX just barely managed to crawl out with the win eliminating X-2 and butts were sore. Mine is still sore from the spanking Psychotic gave me. "No, Tori. That's a very bad Tori. Go to your room and think about what you've done!" It looks ...
  4. Ever17 just got really mindblowing

by , 02-08-2015 at 02:40 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Okay it's been a while since my mind has been blown this much by plot twists, and they just keep on coming. In fact I don't think any visual novel since Umineko had this kind of a 'wow' factor with its plot twists.

Like seriously, all these disjunctioned plot points and lines suddenly come together to form the big picture and the amount of sense it makes is... scary.

Let me go a bit further back. So in one of the first few choices you can pick which protagonist you play ...
  5. don't take it personally, babe, it just ain't your story Review

by , 02-02-2015 at 12:47 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
don't take it personally, babe, it just ain't your story is an original English indie visual novel created by ALPB Soft and Christine Love. It's most notable for its somewhat unusual method of storytelling.

    Overview

The story follows teacher John Rook as he gets to know and helps his seven students. The school has an internal social network called AmieConnect which the students use frequently - or rather, ...
  6. Ever17 just got really depressing

by , 01-26-2015 at 12:14 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Wow. Just wow. I have no idea how Ever17 is structured but it seems a bit complicated. One thing I know for sure is that it has a total of 11 endings, and the one I just got was a very bad end. Story spoilers for this end - the "Tsugumi-Sora Ver. Bad End"

At first things were going well. I was focusing on picking the Tsugumi-centric choices and got to know her quite well. As I had almost anticipated there was a load of information to be gotten here; the reason for the whole ...
  7. Ever17 just got really creepy... and intriguing

by , 01-25-2015 at 08:35 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Okay, so, uh, Ever17. I finished the first character route and on replay I decided to answer some of the very first choices differently.

    Starting with this one:

First playthrough I picked "Who am I", so this time I picked "I've got to find my friends". Turns out... simply picking this choice changes your POV character. I really have no idea what's going on but it feels as if two characters have "blended ...
  8. Ever17 -the out of infinity- First Impressions

by , 01-20-2015 at 11:44 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Now there's a visual novel that gets endless praise for its great story. And for now I can at least say the setting is very intruiging.

Ever17 is set in the subaquatic amusement park "LeMU". In the beginning the perspective switches between two male characters as they simply wander around the park. Not long thereafter an accident occurs, flooding the topmost floor of the park and trapping six people in the floors ...
  9. Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo Review

by , 01-19-2015 at 12:06 AM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)
Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (lit. Wheel Country, Sunflower Girl) is a visual novel developed by AKABEi SOFT2, the same company that would go on to make G-senjou no Maou later on. It is a novel often praised for its good writing and character development; and on that I'm inclined to agree.

    Overview

In the world of Sharin no Kuni, criminals are not locked up in prisons or executed. Instead, they are ...
  10. Sharin no Kuni Chapter 5 ("Sharin no Kuni" Arc) Impressions

by , 01-17-2015 at 10:19 PM (Karifean's Blog of Visual Novels)

So it's already here, the plot's climax. And with it comes the obligatory plot twist that makes you feel so damn stupid for not realizing it before. G-senjou had it, Umineko had many of them, and now Sharin no Kuni has one too.

Really, Sharin no Kuni's Chapter 5 is similar to G-senjou no Maou's in so many ways. You can really see how they took what worked great in Sharin no Kuni and worked it into G-senjou.
