• FINAL FANTASY may be coming to the PC again

Excluding the online offerings, PC gamers have not been able to enjoy a FINAL FANTASY game on their computers since FINAL FANTASY VIII. However, that may all change soon. Square Enix are toying with the idea of bringing future FINAL FANTASY games to the PC!

Series producer, Yoshinori Kitase, speaking to Eurogamer noted:

Let's not forget, when we developed the FINAL FANTASY XIII series, all three titles, at the early stages of development were working on PC. Then we had to port it to the consoles. As far as the technology is concerned, it would have been possible for us to make a PC version, but we decided against it for two reasons: we looked at the market situation and we didn't think it would be a good idea, and also it would have involved lots of complex issues like security. So we decided not to do at that time
This is fair concern, the PC market at that time wasn't as lucrative as home consoles, but with the recent successes of indie games and record-breaking free to play games like League of Legends, there has been a resurgence of interest in PC gaming. Square Enix have taken notice of this trend, Kitase goes on to add:

We see potential in it and there are lots of regions and countries where PC gaming is very strong. So in terms of our hope of being able to deliver our games to every single country in the world, and to as many gamers as possible, yes we would definitely be interest in pursuing that route in the future.
As a publisher, Square Enix have seen successful PC releases in the form of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Tomb Raider (even if it did not meet their sales expectations) and they will be hoping to add the upcoming Thief to that list. Square Enix have also enjoyed the successful relaunch of FINAL FANTASY XIV which has surpassed their sales expectations and is currently producing healthy revenue sitting at 1.8 million players.

It's also worth reminding ourselves that both FINAL FANTASY XIV and KINGDOM HEARTS III are using DirectX 11 development kits. Both games are currently being developed at a quality level higher than what the PlayStation 4 and XBOX One are currently capable of, and will be ported down to those systems requirements. Both next-gen consoles use very similar architecture to PCS, which should facilitate easy porting and multi-platform development.

Speaking at E3 2013, Tetsuya Nomura, director of both FFXV and KH3, stated that Square Enix would considering bringing FFXV and KH3 to hardware capable of running DirectX 11. This could mean that PC gamers will be able to enjoy those two hotly anticipated titles.

It is early days though, Kitase notes:

FINAL FANTASY VII and FINAL FANTASY VIII have been re-released on PC and they've been proving quite popular. It's an early stage for us. We haven't got an awful lot of experience in this field. So when we have more know-how and experience in this market we would be very interested.
How do you feel about this news? Does the prospect of playing future FINAL FANTASY games on your PC excite you? Or are these games best left to the comfort of your couch and trusty consoles?

I love this plan! I'm excited to be a part of it!

...Let's see what they come up with.

      This is bad.

Final Fantasy VII on the PC consumed every moment of my free time (and plenty of moments of class time) when it first became available. I first acquired it by borrowing it from a friend. I played Disc 1 for untold hours because I couldn't get Disc 2. I memorized the JENOVA Life fight, and when I finally got Disc 2, I already had mastered the Comet Materia (among many others). I wound up buying that copy, and later a second PC copy when I misplaced that one (which I found again later).

Final Fantasy VIII wasn't much better. I acquired every Limit Break, every GF, every spell, every Card, even the Items from Chocobo World.

If the new games are anywhere near the quality of Final Fantasy VII (or if Bravely Default is an indicator of future quality), my time is gone. At least consoles I don't play much because I don't like playing on a television, but do not put that stuff on my monitor.

As someone who owns neither a PS4 or an xbone, I whole heartedly support this idea, to be able to play on the PC would see me not need to buy a PS4 in the near future.

When Versus was first announced I was like "aw smurf I'm gonna have to buy a PS3 to play this when the next gen rolls around"

I could see myself grabbing the GOTY/Enhanced editions of future FF when they're cheap on Steam sales. At launch, though, I really don't see myself playing FF anywhere but console. However I'm sure there are many people who would so this can't be anything but a great prospect.

I was wondering what was starting to happen to the framerate with SE's games. The idea that they develop on PCs first and then port down to console seems like a forgone conclusion now that I know about it, but I honestly had never considered it.

I wonder what new talent we'll see...after all, this is basically an announcement of their intention to make new games, which I'm never disappointed to see them do.

This would be great. But is the market really that much healthier? The Final Fantasy series is neither indie or free-to-play, and those seem to be the only sort of games that are really thriving on the PC.

If they distribute it via Steam it will sell like hot cakes on a cold winters day.

Yeah but some of them only out for re-released, except for online Final Fantasy like Final Fantasy 11 and 14. But none of Final Fantasy single player have been officially released for PC. I mean along with the console released. Like I said except for online Final Fantasy. It's quite a disappointment for PC user, like me. I can't even experience it for my self. Like play it directly. All PC user either buy console or watch it's walkthrough. I played games that wasn't made for PC in some kind of internet cafe, but it's PS3 or Xbox cafe. I rent it for couple hours only to be able to experience the console games that wasn't made for PC. Hope Square Enix at least make one Final Fantasy game that out alongside the console.
